<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
représentée sur les dessins annexés, faisant partie de la description et sur lesquels: la figure 1 est une vue explosée montrant la manière suivant laquelle un groupe de tuiles fabriquées selon une forme préférée de l'invention sont assemblées lorsqu'elles sont po- sées sur une toiture; la figure 2 est une coupe transversale des tuiles telles qu'elles apparaissent sur une toiture comprenant les structures de celles-ci, en substance comme on le voit dans le plan de la ligne 2-2 de la figure 1 ; la figure 3 est une coupe transversale d'un joint latéral entre les tuiles et montrant l'aspect tel qu'on le voit en substance dans le plan de la ligne 3-3 de la figure 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Metal tile with re-entrant seal"
The present invention relates to improvements to a metal tile and more particularly to the production of metal tiles comprising simulated tiles formed by a metal sheet which provide the appearance of a wooden roof.
It is known to make roofs and sidewalls from sheet metal and it has been particularly useful to make these constructions of aluminum. However, in the aluminum roofing structures suggested heretofore, a number of drawbacks have been found, particularly with regard to appearance. However, aluminum construction materials offer certain advantages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
compared to wood materials, particularly as regards maintenance and the present invention aims to provide a roofing structure comprising the fronts of the two types of materials as well as other advantages which will appear below. above.
In particular, roofs made of long wooden tiles and known as the "Hollywood shake" type roof have been extremely popular from the aspect point of view and it is proposed to provide aluminum tiles which have the appearance of these large ones. wood panels. However, it will be appreciated that other very attractive roof shapes can be made if desired, using the principles of the present invention.
Another important consideration in the construction of roofs is the cost price and this price includes the cost of materials and the cost of installation. While having large tiles is important to reduce the cost of installation, these large pieces are rather expensive especially when made of wood. However, tiles that are relatively large and having the appearance of large wood panels are relatively inexpensive when made in accordance with this invention and still provide a reduction in the cost of installation. This cost saving is achieved by making large box-shaped structures by appropriately bending tile sheets so as to obtain tiles having the appearance of large pieces of wood with a minimum of material and weight.
Furthermore, the embodiment according to the invention provides the means of sealing the parts so as to solve one of the problems encountered heretofore in the art of metal construction. Thanks to this sealing, it is possible to keep the conventional system used to fix the tiles.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
made of wood but obtaining the additional advantage of a good and solid fixing without adding supports or similar parts.
Accordingly, a main object of the present invention is to provide a roof structure comprising tiles which are made from a single sheet metal, for example aluminum, which are light and easy to install and. which, however, have the appearance of wooden tiles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a
EMI3.1
roof with the caraC1.Gs, '': '' :: - ::: o.nc; described and in 'of, .. f'f, .., .. you have to be incombustible and require a minimum of maintenance.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a roof having the characteristics described which is resistant to bad weather and does not undergo the deformations which are usually encountered with wooden roofs.
Another object is to provide a roof covering having the characteristics described and which can be laid over an existing roof or, if desired, be applied over a new roof.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a roof having the characteristics described and which is provided with an improved sealing device so as to improve the impermeability and allow the laying of a roof having the appearance of a tile. a lower slope than that practiced until now.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be clear from the following description and the new and useful features of the manufacture of metal tiles will be fully defined in the appended claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
shown in the accompanying drawings, forming part of the description and in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view showing the manner in which a group of tiles made according to a preferred form of the invention are assembled when they are placed on a roof; Figure 2 is a cross section of the tiles as they appear on a roof including the structures thereof, substantially as seen in the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a cross section of a side joint between the tiles and showing the appearance as substantially seen in the plane of line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the bottom of one of the tiles shown in Figures 1 to 3 and Figure 5 is a partial perspective view and enlarged of the tiles of Figure 1 showing the realization of a lower corner of those -this.
Although only the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, it is understood that various changes or modifications may be made thereto while remaining within the scope of the appended claims and without departing from the spirit. of the invention,
Referring to the figures for more details, there is shown a roof structure II comprising tiles 12 which are preferably made from a single sheet metal 13 and having a bottom coating of mastic 14 to provide an automatic seal. when the tiles are laid.
The metal sheet 13 of each tile comprises a substantially rectangular body section 10 and various other sections which are integral parts of the rectangular body.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
gular along each of the four sides of it and folded in relation to it. On each side of the rectangular body there is a wedge-shaped side whose point is near the upper end of the body and the smallest dimension of which is substantially perpendicular to the lower edge of the body. One side of tile 17 consists entirely of one of these wedge-shaped sides and the other side 18 is part of a profile 19 having a U-shaped cross section.
This U-shaped part comprises the wedge-shaped side 18 and a side 21 substantially parallel and wedge-shaped parallel and held apart by a bottom section 22 (see Figure 3) substantially rectangular. As best seen in Figure 1, this U-shaped piece is located between the tiles after assembly to give the impression of spacing between the tiles as found in the above roofs of the "Hollywood shake" type. In order to complete the simulated thickness of the tile, there is a bottom edge or side 23 of substantially rectangular shape which is integral with the rectangular body 16 by the fold line? 4.
This lower edge or front wall also carries a section of sheet metal, or retaining strip 26 which is also substantially rectangular and forms an integral part of the lower edge 23 at the fold line 27.
This retaining strip is used to hold the lower edge of the tile by cooperating with a grip strip at the upper end of the lower row of tiles In turn, the tiles provide these grip strips for the adjacent upper row of tiles . To fulfill this function, the rectangular body 16 has a strip 28 for gripping or connecting along its upper edge and intended to hook the strip of maintian 26 of the following tile.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Generally speaking, the binding strip 28 could be applied separately, but in the preferred embodiment of the invention this binding strip forms an integral part of the rectangular body 16 through the fold line 29.
In this way, only one piece is enough for each tile and the need for supports is positively removed.
As shown, the connecting strip 28 extends across the entire width of the body and even above the U-piece 19.
Thanks to this arrangement, the re-entrant ply 19 serves as a stop for rain or water of other origin which could flow into the U-shaped piece 19 or onto the exterior surfaces of the tile.
As best seen in Figure 2, the connecting strip 28 comprises a section 31 folded at an angle upward and which is intended to fit between the lower edge 23 and the rectangular part 16 at the fold 24,
Thanks to this realization, it is seen that the tiles of one row are tightly assembled to the tiles of the adjacent lower row so that the nails 32 or any fastening system applied to the lower row serves to hold both the top of one row of tiles and the bottom of another row of tiles. As best seen in Figure 2, the inner surface of the connecting strip 28 cooperates with part of the front face 16 to grip the retaining strip 26 as in a sandwich and provides a particularly tight grip.
Although the drawing shows the part somewhat spread out and the nails 32 slightly raised, it is clear that the thicknesses are exaggerated for the sake of clarity of the drawing and that in practice no substantial displacement will occur when this assembly is made.
It can also be seen that the mastic 14 is put in place to provide a perfectly tight seal between the strips, so that the water cannot be blown away along the roof and below the tiles. This water displacement presented a

It should be noted that as a variant, these tabs could form part of the lower edge 23' and go up on the inner surfaces of the side edges.
However, in such an embodiment, rainwater is more likely to be forced upward along the tabs and to penetrate below the tile. For this reason, the arrangement shown in the figures is used. This tabbed seal has the advantage of being inexpensively supplied as part of the metal blank when cut to form the tile and, however, it provides an effective seal.

is similar in structure to the tie strip 28 is nailed in place and the tiles are laid over it to place the first row of tiles on the lower edge of the roof.
When these tiles are laid, their U-pieces are assembled side by side, as shown in figure 3, and they are nailed by their upper parts by passing the nails through holes which are preferably already formed in the tiles, Then assemble the next row by sliding the connecting strips of this one below the retaining strips 28 of the first row and the assembly continues until the roof / completely finished .
It will be appreciated that some auxiliary structures may be necessary to cover the lines and simple sheets or other pieces of hardware can be used for this purpose. Preferably, these sheets are also coated with a suitable sealant. In this connection, another advantage afforded by the present invention is the use of relatively thin sheets which can be cut easily with shears suitable for cutting thin sheets so that fabrication is also facilitated when it is necessary to prepare. particular shapes.
Note that the tiles can be laid in regular rows with the corresponding U-shaped grooves, if desired, with the adjacent rows. To allow such an arrangement, the folded section 31 is cut out from the section of the ridge to form a housing 41 intended to receive the groove of the tile of the next upper row.
It is important to note, however, that the remaining portion of the strip 28 is not removed so that it acts as a stopper for water blown down the throat by wind or other cause. It is preferred to arrange the tiles in an offset manner as shown in FIG. 1 in order to obtain the as-

wood pect. A recess or U-cut 39 is made in the middle of the folded-over section 31 and it is intended to receive and properly center a U-shaped piece of the next row when the tiles are laid in this manner. clearly to specialists that other variations of the design can be obtained.
As has been said above, the sheets are preferably made of aluminum which can be anodized or treated in another way to obtain a permanent color in the tone of the wood or, if desired, be painted in wood color. .
In addition, the faces of the sheets can be easily punched and grooved 41 to give the appearance of pieces of wood.
The mastic can be any type known in the construction trade, such as bitumen or asphalt or other plastics which are suitable for holding floors or holding roofing materials together. These compositions are readily available and well known in the building material trade.
It is apparent from the foregoing description that Applicant has provided an improved roof structure which has an appearance similar to attractive wooden structures and which can be shaped to simulate a "Hollywood shake" type roof while being. simple and inexpensive to construct and absolutely safe to use. In addition, the structure is light and easily assembled.
