<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

It is only possible to weld the sheets fitted with it after

lifting of the coating at the weld points. To obtain a closed coating, these places must be re-coated. There is as yet no ecocomically bearable method for this, so that despite their advantages, sheets with a plastic coating are still little used. As only the faces of the sheets are provided with the coating, their edges remain bare and new ones are formed during cutting.
To achieve complete and lasting protection against rust, the edges of the sheets must also be coated.
The problem posed is therefore to protect or re-coat the bare points of the sheets which have been coated in different ways so that the manufactured part has perfect protection against corrosion on all its faces. In addition, it is a question of developing machines and devices allowing

According to a first method, an absorbent material, such as a sponge impregnated with a liquid rust inhibitor, is passed along the bare points of the sheet by moving the latter or by moving the sponge. Los bare parts are thus provided with a coating. The sponge is simple-

The more viscous rust inhibitors are applied by means of an ejector, covering the revl \ tent2 $ voitsinn of the bare spots. For this purpose, the annuity trirrylaa

elastic spray housing have the form of covering slats. In a variant, the covering is formed by adhesive tapes, the protruding part of which constitutes a protective hood for the atomizers. In addition, felt covered scrapers can be applied to the device.
A thicker protective layer is obtained by the use of pasty rust inhibitor. In addition, stripped strips on the surface of a sheet can be filled with pasty plastic to form a uniform coating. For the application, rotating cylinders or moving bands are used which move against the bare spots or the Ion ;; of these, or in front of which the parts of the sheet to be covered are passed.
According to a first example, the cylinder immersed in a plate filled with rust inhibitor extends along an edge or along a strip; in a second example, the applicator cylinder is perpendicular to the edge; according to a third example, a pair of rolls extend along the edge of a coated sheet on both sides and in a fourth case, the shafts carry parts of rolls for the coating of strips.
Like the trays containing the rust preventative, the motor-driven applicator rollers are easily disassembled and cleaned to allow working with two-component products, such as sealant, glue, or sealant. other product, which can only remain for a limited time in the mixed state.
Finally, the pasty material can first be applied to a tape, then be pressed and glued with it on the sheet. Thus, strip-shaped stripping can be folded and closed with thicker coatings or films of synthetic materials.
According to a third method, a real coating

both scratches and shocks is applied by gluing tapes, preferably foil? thin, in order to coat the sheet. The tape is already advantageously provided with an adhesive, that is to say that it is a self-adhesive tape that it suffices to apply and press. In a first device, a roll carrying adhesive tape is a poet

on a carriage which is passed r: lce to 1-al # ts between the edge of the sheet to be coated and a rail parallel to this.
The adhesive tape coming from the roll is placed by means of a pre-folding funnel around the edge of the sheet and glued by two pressure rollers on the upper face and the lower face of the coated sheet, then sectioned to the end of the ridge. In a second device for an edge oriented transversely to the direction of movement of the sheet, the carriage is pulled by a motor, with the intervention of a chain. Following a third example,

below these and whose adhesive washers are then cut, then pressed against the sheet and against each other. The ribbon advances in successive passes, attracted towards a roll where it winds up. In a variant, the outer edge of an expandable adhesive ring is pressed against the edge of the hole and then its inner part is folded against the latter and pressed against the opposite face of the edge.
For this purpose, a compressed air cylinder is provided with an upper part which can be elastically inflatable and compress between a support rod and an opposite rod.
According to a fourth method, tapes or cords of synthetic material are brought with the adjacent coatings to the welding temperature, then pressure-welded. Heating can be provided by means of an infrared radiator. In the case of a machine with tensioned welding tape in front of which is the edge of the sheet, the infrared heaters are presented in arcs of a circle arranged in front of the ribbon as well as above and below the edge of the sheet. Once the welding temperature has been reached, the sheet is automatically pushed against the tape, between pressure cylinders, and welded to it. Heating can also be obtained by means of a hot air blower.
On a carriage passing against the edge of the sheet, with the tape roll, pre-bending funnel and pressure rollers, a hot air blower is installed, the upper and lower outlets of which extend along the edge. sheet and blow hot air into the pre-bending funnel. Instead of welding tape, a bead can be used. The heated bead is first pressed by a roller against the edge, then welded to the edges of the bare sheet by means of a pair of forming rollers and a pair of pressure rollers.
Finally, the welding temperature can be reached by means of

an electromagnet is provided. The device has an endless applicator tape passing over caps and covered with an absorbent material.
The anticorrosive protection can be applied to sheets shaped and welded to form finished pieces of it as an automobile door. Uncoated edges can be varnished all at once using an applicator device. To this end, this device extends around the edges and forms a frame. At the same time, the hollow frame constitutes the reserve container. It tapers downwards to form an opening filled with absorbent material and having a tapered slot to receive the ridges. If the neighboring edges are also to be stripped in view of welding, the sponge has a slit surrounding them. The ridges can also be coated with adhesive tape.
For edges in the form of a circular arc, the adhesive tape is pressed from the outside by means of a carriage running on rails, and folded over the edge by means of a roller. In the case of straight edges, the adhesive tape is simply stretched, by means of a suitable carrier tape and a winding roll, over the edges to be coated. The applied and trimmed adhesive tapes are folded and pressed around the edges by closed clamping jaws.
These jaws are mounted on a frame which can be driven by a movement of ^ storytelling and desconte ot which can also carry the rollers from which the tape unwinds as well as those driven by motor on which the tape is wound. The inflatable hoses can be used as a pressure device.

A simple protection against rusting is obtained by applying liquid products such as varnish. In addition, neighboring visible surfaces, which are already provided with a coating and present their final appearance, cannot be smeared by dropper or atomizers.
Los fil; ures 1 and 2 represent a device of this enre for the application of a rust inhibitor. A container 307 has at the top a filler neck for a liquid rust inhibitor, such as varnish, and on the right side, an opening 306 formed by re-entrant elastic tabs 307a. The container is subdivided by a movable wall 311, extending between the bottom 307b and the cover 307d, into a reserve chamber 307e and an application chamber 307f. The wall 311 has holes 313 through which the anti-rust impregnates an absorbent material such as a sponge 310.
The wall is pressed with the sponge, by springs 312, towards the side, against the edge 301a

The exit of the rust preventative can be regulated by a screw 44, provided on the lid of the container, which allows air to enter it through the transverse hole 44a and the longitudinal hole 44b. When the sheet 21 is pressed, the re-entrant edges 21d and 21e are coated with the rust preventative. The metal sheet 21a is perfectly protected against rust by the upper and lower coverings of plastic material 21b and 21c.
For corners protruding from a sheet, the opening is provided with edges tucked inward.
The edges of the holes drilled inside the surface of the sheet can be coated with cylindrical or conical sponges. The cone of FIG. 5 adapts to a circular cutout 21g of the sheet 21. The cone can however also have an oval, rectangular or irregular cross section and be used for the treatment of holes of different diameters.
In particular, the device consists of a hollow cone 71 pierced with rows of holes 76. The hollow cone serves as a container for the liquid and is covered with an absorbent material 77. For a more viscous rust inhibitor and a more intensive application, the cone can move under the control of a motor. For this purpose, the hollow cone 71 is rotatably mounted on a cylindrical container 72 and sealed by a ring 78. A shaft 73 fixed to the base of the end part of the cone is held on the lid of the container with a ball bearing 80. and carries at the end a pulley 74 for a transmission belt 75. The fixed reservoir 72 carries a filling tube 79.

For better adhesion, two-component products are preferably employed. Their use is more difficult because they only remain in the state of mixture for a limited time called "pot life".
Parts coming into contact with these materials should be cleaned after "pot life" and should therefore be easy to assemble and disassemble. The coating materials can have the same colors as the existing revote.,: Enta. After hardening of the coating materials, they form a uniform surface and protect the sheet against corrosion.

Apart from the sheet 301, the available; Sitif is based on the rollers 322. This device is suitable, for example, for edges oriented in the direction of movement of the sheet.
Figure 18 shows a device for the ridges arranged transversely. A roll of adhesive tape 315 is installed in a housing 327. The adhesive tape 315a is brought by a deflection roller to a pre-bending funnel, then pressed by rollers on the sheet 301.
On the upper and lower face of the housing 327, are mounted pairs of grooved rollers 320 rolling on upper and lower rails 324. The rails are arranged above and below a roller conveyor 328 for the sheet metal 301. To move the device, an endless chain 326, passing over chain sprockets, is suspended from the underside of the latter. A chain sprocket is controlled by a motor 325, with the intervention of a pulley 325c, a belt 325d and a control pulley 325a, Pulling the device along the sheet, the adhesive tape coats the edge this, then the device is returned to the starting position. The thus coated sheet can then continue its movement.
Figures 19 and 20 show another example of edge coating with adhesive tape. The device 355 consists of a hollow support 355a carrying at both ends mounting plates 355b for receiving an upper pressure cylinder 351a and a lower pressure cylinder 351b. is released when the tensioner 51 arrives against the part, its fixing device is provided with an elongated slot 52a, is guided by a bolt 52b fixed to the plate 46 and maintained under tension by a compression spring 52c.
When the device is pushed against the part 21, the sheet 51 first meets the adhesive tape 49 in the interior corner 21a, the knives 56 cut the tape, the clamping jaws 55a and 55d press it, starting in the exterior angles 21d and 21e, against the part, then the knives 58 cut it. With the adhesive tape already applied to the straight edges, the part is protected against corrosion.
In addition to the outer edges of the sheets, the edges of the holes within the surface of the sheet must also be coated. Self-adhesive sheets 86 (FIG. 28) are used for this purpose, the outside diameter 86c of which is greater than that of the holes 89a while their inside diameter 86b is less than. this one. According to a first example, a ring 86 is pressed and glued from above, then another ring is pressed from below against the sheet 89 and glued to the latter; the parts of the rings projecting internally towards each other are then pressed against each other and glued.
The edges of holes or recesses can thus be protected against rust. Figures 25 to 27 show a device operating on this principle. To continuously feed the self-adhesive rings 86, having an outer diameter 86a, they are first glued concentrically to a backing tape 85 with cutouts 85a (figure 24 right), concentrically to them (figure 24). left), then the backing tape with the self-adhesive rings is wound onto rollers 85 (Figure 25). The coating of edges with a ribbon can also be done by welding. To this end, the edges of the sheet c. United with a coating as well as the tape must be heated, to bring them to the welding temperature.
According to a first example, the stretched strip and the sheet placed in front of it and coated with synthetic material on both sides are heated and brought to the welding temperature by means of infrared ray radiators then compressed by introducing them between two cylinders.
FIG. 32 represents a device provided for this purpose.

125b carries two guide rollers 127a and 127b, a support roller for the tape 123a, a coating roller mounted perpendicular to the first and designated by 129; the device also comprises a knife 130, a compressed air pressure device, for the support roller 128, which consists of a cylinder 134, a piston rod 135, a return spring 136 and a compressed air line 137;
the device further comprises rollers 131 placed on the upper face and on the lower face of the housing and guided by their grooves on C-shaped rails 120 and a commando consisting of an electric motor 132 fixed to the housing, with a wheel to friction 132a and an opposing wheel 132b which can be pressed by screws 133 under a running rail 121. At the start of the guide rails, there is a switch 40 allowing the electric motor 132 to be switched on and the compressed air supply. 137 and at the other end is a switch 141 stopping the supply of compressed air and reversing the polos of the motor 132 in order to recoil the device.
The guide rails with the wrapping device are installed in a frame which can be lowered for the treatment of the door and raised, to allow the advancement of the latter.
In order to be able to mechanically tension an adhesive tape intended for the rectilinear edges 117g of the door 117, a tape subdivided along its length is used (figure 50), one of the halves of which takes the form of an adhesive tape 145, while the other half is in the form of a backing tape 145a reinforced with plastic threads 14c and tearable from the adhesive tape 145 by strips 145b. According to figure 49, a spool carrying the Complete tape is mounted on one side of the door edge to be coated and a take-up roller 148 for the backing tape 145a is installed on the other side.
