<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Method of manufacturing a prefragmented hollow body, hollow body, its constituent element and installation for the manufacture of the latter".
The present invention relates to a new technique for manufacturing pre-fragmented hollow bodies, particularly intended for the production of explosive fragmenting projectiles.
Several embodiments of such hollow bodies have already been proposed, among which may be mentioned the bonding of metal fragments on a suitable support) the molding and winding turn on turn of a previously notched wire.
The gluing and molding embodiments do not lend themselves to economical production; it is the winding embodiment that the present invention calls for.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In this field, it has already been proposed to strike V-shaped notches in a wire with a chisel on an anvil of suitable shape, then to straighten the wire deformed following the notching. Such a process is slow and relatively expensive, since the notching is carried out step by step and requires a press specially equipped for this purpose) further equipped with an unwinding / rewinding device for the treated wire.
The object of the present invention is to systematically eliminate these disadvantages by allowing the notching of the wire on the drawing bench and at the usual running speed, while avoiding the appearance of parasitic cleavage planes, both during notching only during winding.
This object is achieved, according to the invention, by a remarkable process in that it consists, on the one hand, in practicing in a wire, on the drawing bench and at the usual running speed, it, notches spaced apart and of a given depth and, on the other hand, in winding this wire turn on turn in order to obtain a hollow cylindrical body of desired length, this winding being carried out under a controlled tension, depending on the nature and dimensions of the wire, the radius of curvature of the winding as well as the shape and depth of said notches, so as to maintain a single plane of fragmentation at each size.
The first phase of this process can advantageously be carried out by means of an installation according to the invention, which consists substantially in the combination of a conventional wire drawing machine, provided with ao a die and a drum. winder, and two wheels, at least one of which is provided with grooves, these wheels being arranged in opposition between said die and said winding drum.
As for the second phase of the aforesaid process, it can be carried out by means of any known winder, provided
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
, whether the latter is equipped with a device for controlling the winding tension, for example a magnetic or electro-mechanical clutch duly calibrated.
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will emerge more clearly from the detailed description thereof given below with reference to the accompanying exemplary and non-limiting drawings. In these drawings: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a hollow cylindrical body obtained in accordance with the method according to the invention; Figure 2 is an axial section of the body shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a section of element from which the hollow body shown in Figures 1 and 2 is made! , and FIG. 4 diagrammatically represents an installation according to the invention making it possible to produce the element of FIG. 3.
The invention therefore makes it possible to produce a prefragmented hollow body 1 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, extremely quickly and economically. These hollow bodies, obtained by winding turn on turn of a pre-cut wire 2, are mainly used for the manufacture of explosive fragmentation projectiles, and, in this application, it is particularly important to obtain a perfect fragmentation. of the body during the explosion) with a subsequent good dispersion of the fragments *
The conditions of speed of manufacture and economy are satisfied by the first phase of the process described above,
according to which the notches 3 are made in the wire
2 on the draw bench and at the usual running speed.
The condition of good fragmentation is obtained by rigorous control of the tensions in the wire 2, as will be explained later.
In order to allow easy slitting of the wire? quickly
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
As envisaged, the invention provides an installation such as diagrammatically in FIG. 4. This consists of a usual wire drawing bar, of which only the last die, its die holder and the winding drum 2 have been shown. comprising, in combination, a pair of wheels arranged in opposition, respectively 7 and 8. The wheel 2 is provided with grooves 9 corresponding to the indentations 3 to be made in the wire 2 before the latter is wound on the drum.
Normally, this drum 2 exerts on the wire 2 a tensile force corresponding to the force required for the drawing.
Under these conditions, however, the wire .2 would be notched under tension which would cause the appearance of parasitic cleavage planes when the wire was released with, as a result) an imperfectly controlled fragmentation of the projectile manufactured by - shooting of this thread. according to a very important characteristic of the present invention, this difficulty is solved by the said * position, between the rollers 2, µ and the die 4, of an auxiliary traction cylinder 10, the presence of which links the section of wire downstream thereof from said drawing tension.
The notched wire 2 thus obtained is, in the second phase of the process described below, wound turn on turn under a controlled tension according to the nature and dimensions of the wire, the radius of curvature of the winding as well as the strong and the depth of the notches 3, so as to maintain a single cleavage plane at the level of each notch.
This winding operation can be carried out on any type of winder equipped with a tension control device *
Thus, by the presence of the auxiliary cylinder 9 and by the aforesaid winding under controlled tension, excellent fragmentation characteristics are obtained, practical tests having demonstrated that projectiles, produced from bodies
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
hollow according to the invention, gave during their explosion splinters of which more than 90% spread out exactly to the dimensions produced at the start of the wire.
In order to obtain good dispersion of the splinters, the spacing of the notches 3 can advantageously be established as a function of the thickness of the wire and of the diantre of the hollow body 3 to be produced, in such a way that, after winding, the notches of any two adjacent turns are not mutually allied.
It is understood that the nature and the section of the wire or wires used are extremely variable. For example, wires of square or rectangular section will be used for the production of sealed hollow bodies, in which case the turns will be joined to each other by welding. In the case of a non-sealed body, the section of the wire can be circular or polygonal without disadvantages for the results.
Considering that the two phases of the above-described process can each be carried out in different places and be separated for a relatively long time, the invention also extends, as a new industrial product, to the notched wire produced by means of the installation described above.
