<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Field directing device"
The invention relates to a field director device consisting of an insulating cone support and a conductive radiation cone placed on this support, the device being provided, in the vicinity of the end of the radiation o8ne, with means eliminating the discharge. .
Such a device is described in Dutch Patent No. 290394, in the name of the Applicant. To provide a good understanding of the invention, an explanation will first be given of the function that this old device fulfills.
When an insulated conductor with a conductive jacket, such as a cable strand, must be terminated or interrupted by a sleeve, it
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
-2- it is inevitable that the conductive casing will be partially widened. When the conductive shell and the insulated core can be designed as a cylindrical capacitor, the electric field then extending almost purely radially between the shell constituting the outer electrode and the core constituting the. internal electrode, it is obvious that the partial separation of the envelope causes the appearance of edge effects. These are felt in a parasitic electric field between the shell and the part of the core which is not surrounded by the shell.
The equipotential surfaces which in the case of cable strands are concentric cylinders, bend as is known in the vicinity of the cut-off line of the envelope with a small radius of curvature towards the outside, which goes from pair with strong field strengths at the edge of the envelope. Due to this conoentration of field, partial discharges can occur, which is absolutely undesirable. To avoid these field concentrations, we! then has around the strands of the cable a radiation cone which is connected to the conductive casing and whose diameter increases uniformly from the casing.
The outward curvature of the equipotential surfaces then takes place much more uniformly, so that no significant and dangerous field concentration can occur.
To retain the radiation cone in place, use is advantageously made of the ieo- reinforcement. It is necessary for other reasons around the cable strands released from the casing, this insulation reinforcement therefore acting as a cone support.
At the end of the radiation cone, @ therefore at the location of its largest diameter, however, field concentrations still occur, if even: they are more reduced. With the old device, these field concentrations are then reduced to a harmless value by providing the xon 3 of radiation with a ring of radiation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
which reduces the curvature of deviating equipotential surfaces; in this place towards the outside.
The object of the invention is to make this ring of radiation superfluous and is based on the fact that the strength of the field at the end of the cone of radiation is directed mainly along the surface of the radiation. cone support, with the consequence that discharges will occur much sooner than if this same field strength were to be directed perpendicular to the surface of the cone support, as is generally known.
The invention provides for this purpose a field director device consisting of an insulating cone support and a conductive radiation cone disposed thereon, the device being provided in the vicinity of the end of the radiation cone with means weakening or reducing the discharges, this field director device being characterized in that said means consist of a groove in the material of the cone support. The field strength at the edge of the radiation cone is then no longer directed along the cone support, but is located mainly perpendicular to the surface of the groove in this cone support.
With the configuration according to the invention, the intensity of the breakthrough field is significantly greater than in the absence of a groove in the support material, while the complication of the arrangement. 'a radiation ring is no longer present.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description below, given by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings: in which: '
FIG. 1 represents the device according to the invention.

Reference 1 designates the insulated cable strand, which is surrounded by the conductive casing 2. The latter is cut into 6. Around the strand or the insulated cable core 1 is arranged, following the casing 2, the insulating cone support 3 and this supports the radiation cone 4 which is metallically connected at 6 to the casing 2.
At the end of the radiation cone 4, the cone support 3 is provided according to the invention with a groove 5. The detail view shows that the field strength at the edge of the radiation cone 4 is directed almost perpendicular to the surface of the groove
The radiation cone 4 may for example be made of cast zinc, in which case the cone support 3 may for example be made of impregnated paper.
