<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

vant la ligne 4-4 de la figure 3;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
<Desc/Clms Page number 20>

"Apparatus and spraying process".
This invention relates, in general, to an apparatus and method for spraying and more particularly to an apparatus and method for applying paint, adhesive or the like flowable materials, in a spray chain. continuous application.
Conventional guns for applying fluid materials use compressed air or equivalent
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to atomize these fluent materials into a fan-shaped spray producing an elliptical shape having an elongated major axis. Consequently, a larger area will be covered with these fluids if the gun is moved over the surface to be worked in the direction of the minor axis of the elliptical shape produced by these guns with the major axis always transverse to the direction of movement.
If, however, the part is being moved, as in continuous application lines and multiple guns are used, a problem immediately arises in applying the fluid material uniformly over the entire surface of the part to be moved. reopen.
With an apparatus moving the guns transversely with respect to the workpiece, the problem consists in keeping the pistols in all their positions ororiently oriented not only with respect to the work to be covered but also with respect to each other.
If the normal elliptical shape of the jet can be maintained with the major axis parallel to the direction of movement of the workpiece, a more uniform and longer gun stroke can be achieved. Likewise, if the part has a certain depth or thickness, better edge coverage can be obtained because the angles required for the guns can be maintained throughout the stroke. In addition, excess paint loss from spraying can be reduced, resulting in savings in material, maintenance and cleaning.
Paints, adhesives or the like flowable materials are highly flammable and, in atomized form, are dangerously explosive. An apparatus intended for the spraying of such explosive materials and normally enclosed in a chamber resistant to explosions and any electrical apparatus situated in this chamber must
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
be specially constructed or enclosed to avoid any spark that could cause an explosion. However, these measurements are not always absolutely certain.
Therefore, the main object of the present invention is to provide a method and apparatus for spraying flammable materials using no electrical element within a protected spray enclosure. explosions.
Another main object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus and method for spraying which enables the entire surface of a moving part to be quickly and uniformly covered.
Another primary object is to: provide a method and apparatus for applying fluent materials to a workpiece using a turntable comprising a plurality of applicators disposed at the periphery of the table and which are kept properly oriented with respect to one another. as well as in relation to the moving part to be worked.
Another object is to provide a rotating spray table having a plurality of guns arranged at the periphery of the table and using a simplified planetary system to keep the jets properly oriented.
Another object is to provide such a rotary gun table comprising an easily adjustable device for limiting the operation of the guns which it carries to the effective area of the workpiece which passes in front of it.
Yet another object is to provide a rotating udder table for coating elongated workpieces which uses a chain type planetary system to keep the guns it carries properly oriented.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Yet another object is to provide a spraying apparatus for moving parts which maintains the main axis of the elliptical shape produced by the spraying always parallel to the direction of movement of the part.
Yet another object is to provide a method of applying a uniform coating to a moving flat elongate part.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will emerge from the following description.
To achieve the foregoing purposes, the invention therefore comprises the characteristics described entirely below and particularly evidenced in the claims, the following description and the accompanying drawings which show in detail a particular embodiment of the invention, this being however given only as an indication in one way, among many others, of application of the principle of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an end elevation, partially broken away and in section of an apparatus according to the present invention for spraying fluent materials on both the top and bottom of the workpiece passing through the tube. apparatus; Figure 2 is a partial top plan view of this apparatus as seen from the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1 with the top part partially crossed out to show more clearly the control and with the lower element partially broken away for the clarity of the figure; Figure 3 is an enlarged partial side elevation of one of the arms of the upper turntable shown in Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4 is a detail sectional view of this following arm

before line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is an enlarged partial elevation of the gioleur as seen from the plane of line 5-5 of Figure 3; Figure 6 is a horizontal section of the gun taken substantially along line 6-6 of Figure 3; Figure 7 is a partial top view of the braa as seen from the plane of line 7-7 of Figure 3 and Figure 8 is an enlarged partial elevation of the drive mechanism and turntable support and the controller for limiting the effeotive piatola- tion on the surface of the workpiece.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings and more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown an embodiment of the present invention of the% 1-) designed to apply by spraying a fluid material, uniformly on both. faces of a part W which can be supported so as to move in a direction perpendicular to the plane of FIG. 1 on a suitable conveyor, not shown, between frames 1 and 2. Reference may be made to Joint patent application filed on the same date by the applicant for an "Apparatus and method for the manufacture of building panels" for the description of an application of the present invention.
The apparatus shown comprises an upper turntable or wheel 3 and a lower turntable or wheel 4 carrying a plurality of gun heads 1 disposed at the periphery thereof and appropriately oriented with respect to each other and with respect to the workpiece W so as to uniformly apply a fluid material to both the top and bottom surfaces of that workpiece.
turntables .3 and! can be
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
substantially identical in shape and therefore we will only de- orer in detail the upper turntable 3
However, the turntables can be supported by a common frame on the floor F., this frame comprising side members 1 and 8 between and above which are located beams 3 and 10 parallel to each other. other and slightly spaced laterally. These beams are placed transversely to the conveyor supporting the workpiece W and they can be assembled by tie rods 11 or equivalent fixing means passing through intermediate spacers 12 at each end of the beams.
Angle bars 13 may also be provided at each end of the beams with one wing attached to frames 7 and 8 and the other, or upper wing, fixed between beams 9 and 10. the beam comprises upwardly polished parts 15 and 16 interconnected by an upper horizontal part 17 in the center of which is mounted the turntable 1 so as to rotate about its vertical axis.
Likewise, the beam 10 comprises parts 18 and 19 inolinéee downwards and interconnected by a horizontal part.
20 in the center of which is suspended the rotary table 4 which rotates around its vertical axis.
Thanks to the lateral spacing of the beams .2 and 10, the axis of the turntable 1 is slightly offset from the axis of the turntable 1 in the direction of movement of the part W. The beams .2 and 10 therefore comprise vertically offset central parts! 2 'and 20 which release the workpiece W and support the turntables and! by allowing them to rotate above and below this room. Beams and 10, including vertically offset central parts, can be fabricated
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
by welding from square tubular pieces to achieve the desired structural rigidity and strength.
Referring now additionally to Fig. 8, it can be seen that the turntable 1 can be mounted on the central part 17 of the beam .2 by means of a shaft 22 twisted in bearings 23 with sleeve. ledge in the upper part of the beam part 17 and supported vertically by a stop 24 below the bottom of the beam part 17 so as to rotate about a vertical axis.
The bottom of the shaft 22 is provided with a coupling 25 of the flexible elbow type with ball joint attached to the shaft by a raooord 26 and a passage 27 passes through the shaft upwards to terminate in a manifold 28 with eight orifioes. Above the manifold, an olavelling groove 29 is pierced in the shaft to fix the manifold on upper and lower plates 30 and 31 between which are mounted eight arms 32 to 39 of square tubular section, spaced apart at equal distances around the circumference and protruding radially. A ring 40 can be attached directly to the shaft 22 and a retaining ring 41 can be attached to the top of the plate 30 surrounding the shaft.
Fasteners 42 may be employed between plates 30 and # 1 to secure the radially extending arms in the appropriate position. An eight port manifold is fitted to the top of the shaft and a vertical fluid passage connects this manifold to the elbow type flexible ball joint 44 which can be connected to the top of the shaft by. a joint 45 Thus,
the two collectors with eight ports 28 and 43 rotate with the shaft
22 and therefore also with the wheel or rotating table
The rotation of the shaft and consequently of the table
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
rotating is obtained by a hydraulic motor 47 mounted on a plate 48 of the motor support 49 fixed to the side of the central part! 1 of the beam 9 Hydraulic conduitsB 50 and 51 are automatically connected to the motor 47 and they can be fixed on the side of the beam .2 and lead to a source of pressurized hydraulic fluid to drive the motor 47 The motor output shaft is connected by the coupling 53 to a speed reducer 54 which can also be mounted on plate 48 of support 49 The speed reducer is fitted with a wheel
with drive chain 55 on which passes a roller chain 56 as well as on a freewheel 57 and a wheel 58 keyed on the shaft 22. The freewheel 57 is mounted on a support 60 fixed to the side of the part. center 11 of the beam .2 by the elongated slot and a fastening connection shown at 61 in Fig. 1 so that the position of the freewheel can be adjusted in a horizontal plane to counteract the chain tension. training 56
The gun heads 3 at the remote ends of each arm 32 to 39 are supported on vertical axes 65 which are supported by self-supporting ball bearings. alingans 66 and 67 in which they rotate above and below the far or outer end of each arm.
The axes 65 are therefore mounted so as to rotate about their vertical axes and at the top and at the bottom they are provided with flexible couplings 68 and 69 of the elbow type ball joint which are mounted on sleeves 70 and 71 In this way,
elbow couplings can always be turned radially inwards regardless of the rotation of the axles 65
The rotation of the axes 65 supporting each of the gun heads 2 at the outer ends of the arms # 2 to 39

The axis ± 2 at the far end of the arm 2¯ is also provided with an identical to the one fixed above and which may have an identical shape to the wheel 11. wheel 86 integral with the axis .6 of the adjacent arm 22.
This axis is provided with another chain wheel 8 on which passes a chain 88 which also passes over the wheel 89 mounted on the axis 65 of the adjoining arm 36. This axis drives another chain wheel 90 on which passes. a chain 91 which also passes over the wheel 92 mounted on the axis of the adjacent arm 37 This axis is also provided with a chain wheel 93 over which passes a chain 94 which also passes over the wheel 95 mounted on the axis 65 of the adjacent arm 38 This axis also carries a chain wheel 96 on which passes a chain which also passes on a wheel 98 integral with the axis 65

of the adjacent arm following 39 the chain wheels 73 77 78 80,81,83,84,86,87,89,90. 92,93.95.96 and 98 can all have the same shape.
Likewise, the chains 79, 82 85 88 '91 .2! and 97 can have the same length and have identical shapes and each of these chains can pass over a freewheel 100 mounted. on a support 101 which is adjustably attached to the elongated plate 102 which connects the outer ends of adjacent arms and which is parallel to the tensioned end of the chain.
There are obviously eight of these elongated plates 102 between the radially extending and regularly spaced arms 32 to 39 and the plate 102 between the arms 32 and 39 can be provided with a support 104 carrying a free chain wheel 105 for supporting a tensioned chain 76 moving radially along the arm 32
It is now clear that the planetary chain drive system described above will rotate each axis 65 at the far end of each arm one full turn when the turntable turns one full turn on its shaft. support 22 As all axes are interconnected or keyed together to rotate in unison by chains 79,82 85 88.91 94 and 97, turning the turntable will not only rotate each axis
65 of a full turn,
but will rotate these axes uniformly both with respect to each other but also with respect to the workpiece W passing below the turntable 3 the chain wheel 73 being fixed with respect to the frame .2 and the pairs wheels mounted on axles 65 at the far ends of arms 32 to 8 and the single wheel 98 on axles 65 at the far end of arm 39 thus form what may be called a drive system
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
chain planetary gear that rotates the 6y5 axes at the far ends of the arms one full turn for each full turn of the turntable 3 These axes, thanks to this oom- made,
rotate in unison to keep the gun heads 5 properly oriented with respect to each other so that the giolage ellipses which they produce, denoted by 110 in Figure 2, are always oriented with respect to the part W. The main axis of these ellipses 110 is thus kept parallel to the edge of the peak to be worked which can move in the direction of arrow 111 and the main axis of the ellipse 110 remains aligned with this direction of movement or with the edge of the part W when the spraying ellipse moves transversely over the part when the turntable is rotated.
Referring now more particularly to Figures 1, 3, 5, 6 and 8 and first of all to Figure 8, it can be seen that each axis 65 is crossed by a vertical passage 113 which descends from the flexible ball joint and elbow 68 and terminates in a threaded orifice 114 extending transversely. Likewise, a vertical passage 115 rises from the ball and elbow joint 69 and ends with transverse threaded holes 116 and 117.
The pistol head .2 which can, for example, be a pistol 21 of the Binks model, is fixed on the respective axis by a flange 118 detachably held by fasteners 119 on the axis 65 just above. of the T-shaped end of passage 115 It should be noted that the gun 2. can be placed in the position shown in full milking or vice versa in the position shown in dotted lines 120 and in any case, it can rotate in the position shown! ) in solid lines or in the position shown in dotted lines when the turntable rotates 180.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
As can be seen more clearly in Figures 3, 5 and 6, an air regulator 122 is mounted on a raooord 123 starting from the threaded hole 117 in the axis 65 A fitting 124 leaves the regulator and it is provided with 'a ball joint type elbow connection 125 to which an air pipe 126 is connected. This air pipe is connected to the gun 1 in 127 by means of an identical elbow connection of the type to ball joint 128 (see figure 3).
An air valve 130 is connected to the opposite threaded port 116 on the spindle and a ball joint 131 allows the air hose to be attached to it 132 An elbow connector 133 connects the air hose 132 to the gun 1 at 134 just above the connection 127 of the air pipe 126. The air in the pipe 126 thus passes through the regulator 122 while the air in the pipe 132 cannot. The air passing through the hose 132 may be called the cylinder air to turn the gun on and off and the air passing through the hose 126 may be called the atomized air which will combine with the fluid material to obtain the air. / jet of fluid material.
This fluid material is supplied to the gun .2 through the flexible hose 137 to the fluid inlet 138 via a ball joint 139 The fluid inlet 138 is adjacent to the bottom or spout of the tube. gun 1 and it is in the vertical alignment of the connections 127 and 134 respectively for the air of the cylinder and the atomized air.
The flexible pipe 137 is connected by a ball joint 140 to the fluid valve 141 which in turn is connected to, the threaded port 114 at the end 113 of the passage in the axis 65 It can now be seen that the fluid material for the guns is brought to these through the upper part of the shaft from the ball joint 68 and elbow down through the passage 113 the tap 141 the pipe 137 to

the fluid inlet 138 of the gun 5 The pressurized air to actuate the gun is brought through the lower ball joint 69 and elbow joint and rises ---- through passage 115 from where it divides to pass to both through the regulator 122 the pipe 126 and finally to the air inlet
atomized 127 and directly through pipe 132 to the cylinder air inlet 134.
Fluid materials can be supplied to the ball and elbow joint 68 of each of the pins 75 by means of a fluid line 1434 attached at 144 to the top of each arm at 39 and terminated at its outer end 145 to the. respective ball joints and by its inner end 146 to the corresponding hole in the manifold 143 It should be remembered that the manifold 43 has eight holes, one for each of the arms 32 to 12, and this manifold rotates with the table rotating. Fluid materials are fed to the manifold through elbow and ball joint 44 and fitting 45 from a fixed line 147 extending from the exterior of the machine from a source of paint, adhesive or other similar fluent material under. pressure.
The air supplied to each gun can be obtained from a fixed hose 150 connected to the elbow ball joint 25 at the base of the central shaft 22 which in turn ensures the passage of the pressure upwards through the channel 27 and the eight-port manifold 28. The pipe 150 as the pipe
147, can be made of steel and comes from outside the machine from a suitable source of pressurized air.
Each manifold port 28 is connected to a tub 152 by means of a coupling 153 extending along the respective arms.
32 to 39 (see figures 3, 4 and 7). This piece of tube 152 is connected by its outer end to a T 154 to the middle branch of which is connected an elbow 155 which at its
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
This tower is connected to a long fitting 155 terminating at the inlet of a two-way valve 156, normally closed. The other branch of the T 154 is connected to a piece of flexible tube 157 which is connected at 158 to the pilot controlled valve 159.
The outlet of the valve 159 is connected by the elbow 160 to a copper pipe or equivalent
161 connected at 162 to the ball joint 69 at the base of the respective pins 65
The exhaust port of two-directional valve 156 is connected to elbow 164 which in turn is connected to a piece of flexible tubing 165, the other end of which is connected to the middle branch of T 166.
The lower branch of the T is connected via an elbow to an elongated fitting 167 which is connected to the inlet port of the two-way valve 168, normally closed *
The valve 168 exhaust port can be connected directly to a flexible tubing 169 connected by the elbow
170 to the valve 159 The valves 168 and 156 can be mounted on the respective arms by means of vertical brackets or bands 171 and 172 respectively attached to the arms by suitable fasteners. The valves 168 and 156 thus protrude below the arm on which they are carried and these valves are in horizontal alignment. The control valve 159 can also be attached to the side of the arm.
Pilot operation of valve 159 is now clearly visible. When the normally closed valve 156 is opened, the valve 168 remaining normally closed, the pressurized air arrives from the line 152 through the T 154 the elongated fitting 155 the valve 156 to the flexible pipe 165 and through the T 166 to the flexible pipe 169 leading to the pilot orifice of the valve 159 Conversely, when the normally closed valve 168 is opened and the ------------
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
valve 156 remains closed,
the pilot orifice of the valve is put in communication with the atmosphere through the exhaust port of the valve 168
Valves 168 and 156 may be provided with pivoting actuating arms 173 and 174 which can be centered or spring biased in the valve closed position and these arms are propelled by means of several suitably placed rollers 175. on the rods 176 of the air cylinder-piston assemblies 177 These cylinder-piston assemblies are mounted on arms 179 180, 181 and 182, the close ends of which are stacked on top of each other and are articulated on the shaft 22 as shown figure 8.
Each arm has an operating handle with a downward extension 184, an outward lateral extension 185 and finally, a longitudinal extension 186 which is substantially parallel to the edge of the workpiece W but substantially spaced outward. exterior of oelle-oi. the outer ends of the handles can be mounted in yokes on suitable supports so that they can be adjusted transversely to the workpiece W.
It can thus be seen that each arm supporting a cylinder-piston assembly is articulated in proximity to the central shaft 22 of the turntable and can be adjusted by hand relative to this central shaft to vary the orconferential position of the roller 175 with respect to to the central axis of the turntable or the shaft 22. Note that only two of the four arms are shown on; FIG. 2 for the turntable 3, but it will be noted that these arms are generally arranged diagonally or in the form of an X from the central shaft.
The vertical axes of the air cylinders 177 carried by the arms can be slightly offset alternately so that the roller
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
175 actuating the valve is arranged to act only on one of the valves 168 or 156 on each arm as the turntable rotates past them. The operator can thus manually adjust the position of the various cylinder-piston assemblies 177 by acting on the arms 186, the latter being bent to avoid the area between the gun heads and the workpiece during the operation of the guns, depending on the width of the room to be reopened.
As shown in Figure 1, the air pipes 190 and 191 can be attached to either side of the frame 9 and these pipes terminate in the four air actuated cylinder-piston assemblies 177 used to start and stop the gun heads. Each group of air ducts can be rqoordé to the sets 177 on the same side of the frame. As can be seen in FIG. 8, the T 192 and 193 are connected to the assembly 177 on the arm 179 and from these T pipes 194 leave towards the assembly 177 mounted on the arm 181 These assemblies are therefore double effect and they are connected in series to each pair of pipes 190 and 191.
It is possible to use devices for actuating valves 195 and 196 depending on the position of the workpiece, mounted on supports 197 and ILS (see figures 1 and 2) on the frames and 2 of the conveyor to actuate the sets. cylinder-piston 177 for lifting the rollers, 175 carried by the tigers in a position in which they are in contact with the desired valve actuator
173 or 174 of valves 168 and 156 respectively.

Devices 195 and 196 which deteotate the position; workpieces, may preferably be in the form of wire fingers or roller wheels which control valves which in turn control the cylinder-piston assemblies.
In any case, to ensure uniform coatings near the anterior and posterior edges of the 1st workpiece, the first stroke should be made before the center of the fan-shaped jet hits the edge of the workpiece and the first stroke. last stroke, after the center of this jet has passed the room. If the workpieces are continuous and have the same width, the starting and stopping of the gun strokes can be controlled by hand.
If the workpieces pass intermittently and have the same width, these maneuvers are preferably done automatically. It is also understood that other types of sensing devices such as switches or photocells can be used. The cylinder-piston assembly for stopping does not necessarily have to be lowered and it can be raised so keep on going.
If the length of the workpieces varies or if they are made up of two or more separate parts, a memory system, for example a magnetic tape or a perforated card can be used to control the assemblies. 177
In operation, with the turntable 1 rotating in the direction of arrow 199 (figure 2), the cylinder-piston assembly 177, the position of which is set in the upper left corner on the arm 182, can be extended under the part sensor 196 and roller 175 will contact valve controller 174 156 when the turntable arm supporting the valves passes by.
The axis of the cylinder-piston assembly 177 can

be placed in such a way that only valve 156 will be actuated. The pilot line for valve 159 will then be pressurized which activates the gun head carried at the end of the arm when this head moves near the edge of the workpiece W. When the turntable continues to rotate , the gun head, now in activity, will move across the workpiece in a curved path and the main axis of the elliptical shape of the jet 110 will be kept parallel to the edge of the workpiece or to the direction of the workpiece. moving the transporter.
As the jet from the head moves past the opposite edge of the workpiece, roller 175 of the next cylinder-piston assembly or that in the upper right corner of Figure 2 on arm 180 enters. in contact with the control device 173 of the valve 168 thus putting the pilot line of the operational valve 159 on the arm in communication with the atmosphere. In this way the gun heads will be actuated just before the gun head passes over the top surface of the work and will be stopped just after the gun head passes the edge of the work. Accordingly, the amount of excess spraying can be kept to a minimum and yet a workpiece having substantially any width can be processed.

175 on the diagonally opposed cylinder-piston assemblies 177 carried by arms 181 and 179 will function in the same way when lifted by sensing device 195 so that as the gun head continues to rotate, always properly aligned by the planetary chain drive, the gun head will be activated as it approaches the edge of the work and stopped, when

that it arrives beyond the opposite edge, by the selective contact of valves 156 and 168 on the arms. When the last workpiece passes through the machine, the cylinder-piston assembly for the stop control remains raised long enough to be sure all guns are closed.
The piping for the fluid material and for the air, shown in detail in Figures 3 to 7, is obviously typical of the piping provided for each of the eight arms of the turntable. As shown in Figures 4 and 7, there is sufficient space for the passage of the flights of chain 76 even though this chain is the same length and is below a single arm. It will of course be appreciated that the chain can be placed on any of the arms 32 to 38 and produce the same results.
As stated above, the lower or inverted turntable µ may be substantially identical in shape to the turntable 1 and it carries udder heads 1 turned upward and intended to cover the inner surface of the workpiece W. the only important difference between the two turntables is in the mounting of the motor 47 and the reducer 54 at the upper part of the plate 200 which is in a different position with respect to the part horizontal center 20 of beam 10 detaches from plate 48 relative to horizontal center portion 17 of beam 9. Otherwise, the structure of the turntable and its mode of operation may be the same.
In either case, the surface of an elongated workpiece is evenly covered by moving a gun head in a curved path over the workpiece while maintaining the shape.

of the jet produced by this gun head always oriented relative to the workpiece so that the main axis of the elliptical shape is parallel to the edge or perpendicular to the direction of movement of the gun head transversely to the workpiece W.
Further, with the valves placed on each arm, the cylinder-piston assemblies mounted on the rollers 175 can selectively actuate the valve 159 as the respective gun head approaches the edge of the work to initiate the pistol and again. to operate valve 159 to stop spraying after the jet has passed the opposite edge of the workpiece. As the workpiece moves, the successive jets will cover curved bands overlapping lightly on the workpiece and the speed of the turntable can have a direct effect on the speed of the workpiece. to work. Therefore, the faster the part moves, the faster the turntable can turn.
All the valves and all the ------- drive mechanisms of the turntables are mechanically or hydraulically controlled so that no electrical element must be inside the pistola enclosure. - ge for the device which thus avoids the obligation to have electrical elements specially constructed to be protected from explosions and which may, of course, not
