<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1

Process for preparing thiophosphonic or thiophosphine esters.
In the monograph by G. Schrader: "Die Entwicklung neuer Insektizide auf Grundlage organiacher Fluor- und Phosphorverbindungen" (2nd ed. [1952], Verlag Chemie, Weinheim, Bergstrasse), the diethylthiophosphoric ester of 4 is already described on page 59 -cyano-l-phenol, of the following formula:
EMI1.1
EMI1.2
According to the author's indications, the 0,0-diethyl-0- (4-cyano-phenyl) -ester of thionophosphoric acid has, for a moderate toxicity towards warm-blooded animals, a certain

insecticidal activity, provided it is used at:. ;;: 'l.te concentrations; however, this activity is not sufficient for the use of the cyano-compound cited to pay off in practice.
Contrary to this, we have just discovered presently, on the one hand, that thiophosphoric, -phosphonic on -phosphinic esters of the recited type, which have in the aromatic nucleus, in addition to the cyano group, also halogen (for example chlorine) as additional substituents, are distinguished by remarkable insecticidal properties, without being particularly toxic.
On the other hand, as has also been established, the substitution of the cyanophenyl residue by lower alkyl groups (eg methyl) produces a marked reduction in the toxicity towards warm-blooded animals for almost identical biological activity.
The preparation of halo-4-cyanophenyl- or lower-alkyl-4-cyanophenyl-esters of thionophosphoric, -phosphoric or -phosphinic acids takes place according to methods known in principle by reaction of halides of 0,0-dialkoyl. -thionophosphoryl or O-alkyl-ester-alkylthionophosphonyl halides or respectively dialkylthionophosphinyl halides with halogen-4-cyano- or lower-alkyl-4-cyanophenolates or with the corresponding free phenols in the presence of agents acid fixers.
For the examination of the insecticidal activity of the thiophosphoric, -phosphonic or -phosphine esters which can be prepared in accordance with the invention, the active substance in question is dissolved beforehand with an auxiliary dissolving agent such as acetone or dimethylformamide with joint use of a commercial emulsifier, especially of a nonionogenic type based on aryloxypolyglycol ether, and then diluted

In order to demonstrate the superior technical properties of the compounds according to the invention, the products of the process were studied as regards their activity against aphids, cochineals and mealybugs ("Schmierläuse"), in addition against spinning mites and insects. devourers (caterpillars).
The tests on the aphid are carried out in a known manner with the species aphis fabae on dwarf beans (Vicia faba) by spraying the infested plants with the active emulsion until dew is formed and it is evaluated testing after 2 or 4 days.
The examinations with mealybugs and mealybugs are done in the same way in a known manner.
The test for spinning mites is carried out as described above with the species tetranychus altaenae Hanst on bush beans (phaseolus vulgaris).
The determination of the systemic activity for aphids was carried out in the same way with the species aphis fabae on the vicia faba; in this case the active emulsion containing as active substance the thiophosphoric, -phosphonic or -phosphinic ester considered in accordance with the invention is poured onto the plants grown in flower pots.
The better insecticidal activity of the products of the invention compared to the 0,0-diethyl-0- (4-cyanophenyl) -esters of known thionophosphoric acids mentioned above emerges from the following table:
