<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

So far, few compounds are known which are sufficiently effective on the living plant against parasitic fungi such as Phytophthora infestans, Fusicladium, Peronospora, Septoria, etc., and which do not exert any action. harmful to plants which have been treated with it. Many of these known compounds have certain defects, such as intense color, unpleasant odor, or insufficient resistance to light and weathering. These undesirable properties are manifested especially in a hot and humid atmosphere.
Other substances with fungicidal activity are unsuitable for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
practical use because their dose of use is too high; s so that there is a lack of suitable compounds displaying fungicidal action on plants.
We have just found a class of organic compounds which have excellent activity as plant fungicides, but which do not exhibit the above-mentioned defects. These compounds are the benzotriazols substituted on nitrogen by sulfonyl residues, corresponding to formula I, which can be obtained according to known methods from benzotriazol or its ring-substituted derivatives, in alkaline-aqueous solution or in aqueous solutions. inert solvents, with the addition of acid-binding substances, with alkyl-, aryl- or aralkyl-sulfochlorides, amides of chlorosulfonic acid or esters of chlorosulfonic acid. They can also be prepared from the alkaline compounds of benzotriazols and the corresponding sulfochlorides in inert solvents.
The reaction scheme is as follows
EMI2.1
R H, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, a heterocyclic radical, an OH group, OR, SH, SR, 0-acyl, S-acyl, H2N-NH, N (R) 2; NH-acyl, halogen, NO2, etc.
R '= an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical, optionally substituted, an N (RI) 2 or OR' group. n = 1 - 4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Another method for the preparation of these compounds consists of reacting an o-phenylenediamine with a sulfochloride and subjecting the resulting product to a subsequent reaction with nitrogenous acid:
EMI3.1
Benzotriazols substituted with alkylsulfonyl groups have been found to be particularly suitable for combating fungal diseases.
The sulfonyl-benzotriazols can be applied to the gaping hole according to the usual methods as (spraying or powdering agents, for example in admixture with extenders and thinners, adhesion agents or surfactants. , or the like The products can also be applied in the form of aqueous emulsions For certain uses it may be advantageous to combine them with other fungicides, such as, for example, preparations based on copper and (or) insecticides.
The preparation of the sulfonylbenzotriazols is carried out according to methods known in principle. 1-Methane-sulfonyl-benzotriazol is obtained for example as follows: 35.7 g of benzotriazol are dissolved in a solution of 12 g of sodium hydroxide in 300 cc of water; to this solution is added dropwise, while stirring and at room temperature, a solution of 34.3 g of methane sulfochloride
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in 50 cc of acetone. Then stirring is continued for a further hour at room temperature. The precipitated crystals are separated by suction and washed with water. Make it-
