<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La présente invention a pour buts: de procurer un dispositif économique, automatique et très rapide pour entailler les pneus transversalement à leur bande de roulement en une seule révolution du pneu, et de façon que cer- taines parties ne soient pas entaillées; de procurer un appareil pour entailler les bandes de rou- lement des pneus, comportant un dispositif pour supporter le pneu et assurer-une profondeur d'entaille précise, et pour déformer la surface de la bande de roulement du pneu de manière à n'entailler que certaines parties;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for treating tire treads, and more particularly to a method and a. apparatus for adhering these treads, that is to say notching them transversely in order to improve their non-slip properties. For certain types of tires, it is advantageous to score only certain parts of the tread surface. For example, for car tires, only the shoulder parts of the tire are notched because the sipes formed by the notches in the middle of the tread tend to tear as a result of the centrifugal force when the tire works at high speed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Several methods and apparatus are known for notching only certain parts of the surface of the tread, but in all known methods, the tire is notched while it is mounted on a rim, or else on more than one. tire revolution.
The objects of the present invention are: to provide an economical, automatic and very rapid device for notching the tires transversely to their tread in a single revolution of the tire, and so that certain parts are not notched; to provide an apparatus for scoring the treads of tires, comprising a device for supporting the tire and ensuring an accurate scoring depth, and for deforming the tread surface of the tire so as not to score that some parts;
to provide an apparatus for scoring the treads of tires without mounting the tire on a rim and comprising a device for deforming the surface of the tread in the area of action of the scoring device so as not to cut only parts of the tread surface with each pass of the knife.
These and other objects, as well as other advantages, will become apparent from the following detailed description and from the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 8 is a section similar to that of Figure 6, showing another embodiment of the invention;
Figure 9 is a plan view of the device for deforming the tread of the tire shown in Figure 8.
Following Figure 1, the apparatus comprises a rotary knife carriage 1, a mechanism serving to support the tire 2, and a device serving to deform its tread 3.
Knife mechanism and motor.
The knife carriage 1 rests on the rollers 4 rotating around a horizontal axis and the rollers 6 rotating around a vertical axis so as to be able to rotate in a fixed plane.
As shown in Figure 2, the rollers 6 are in contact with the inner radial surface 7 of the carriage to hold it laterally. The rollers 6 also have a flange 8 which is in contact with a flange 9 of the carriage 1 so as to hold it vertically. The outer periphery of the carriage comprises a toothed crown 10 engaged by the pinion 11, fixed to the drive shaft 12 of the motor 13. The rollers 4 and 6 are supported on pins 14 and 15 housed in the supports 16 fixed to the plate. base 17. The base plate 17 has sides 18 and a cover 19. thus completely masking the knife carriage.
Several rounded segmental knives or cutters 20 are fixed to the carriage 1 along an eccentric or a helicoid
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
with respect to the axis of rotation of the carriage, Each cutter 20 is preferably housed between radiaux.intérieurs 21 and external radial 22 supports fixed to the carriage 1 by appropriate studs 23. A spacer 24 is inserted into it. 'between the respective front and rear edges 25 and 26 of the knives to keep these edges apart from each other by a distance equal to the distance between the different notches 27 that it is desired to leave in the tire 28.
The spacer 24 is fixed to the knives by bolts 29 which pass through the supports 21 and 22 and the front and rear edges 25 and 26 of the adjacent longitudinal knives. A key 30 of the same length as the knives is housed in a keyway formed in the contact surfaces of the supports, and provides a base for supporting the backs of the knives to maintain the cutting edges in a fixed plane relative to the supports.
It is clear that one revolution of the carriage will form a number of notches in the tire tread equal to the number of cutters attached to the carriage and that if the leading edge of each cutter enters a notch the cutter will follow in -1-notch and will displace the tire tread a distance equal to the distance between the front and rear edges 25 and 26 of the cutters, which overlap respectively before the next front edge does. begins a new notch.
Tire support mechanism.
According to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, the tire support device comprises a post 31, fixed to the center of the base plate 17. The post 31 forms a support for the roller 32 and for the arm, 33 which supports the device for deforming the tire tread, described in detail below. The roller 32 is mounted so as to be able to turn at the outer end of the arm 34 which pivots on the fixed bracket 35.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
to the upright 31. The upper end of the upright 31 comprises a bracket 36 which supports the pneumatic cylinder 37 which can pivot on this bracket and which comprises a piston rod 38 which is fixed to the arm 34- and can pivot on this arm.
In Figure 3, a pair of rollers 39 and 40 are mounted on the arms 41 and 42, respectively. The arms 21 and 42 pivot around the tenons 43 and 44 which are housed in support brackets 45 and 46 fixed to the base plate 17. Each arm 41 and 42 comprises a cleat. 47 attacked by a spring 48 which raises them. arm 42 in a position shown in solid lines in Figure 3.
When actuating cylinder 37, arm 34 pivots around bracket 35, forcing roller 32 to contact tire 28 and lower it against rollers 39 and 40, which must move apart. slightly from each other to occupy the position shown in dotted lines in the figure, 3. The tire is then attacked at 3 isolated points, spaced circumferentially by the concave surfaces of the rollers 32, 39 and 40, so that the tire is firmly and elastically held in a vertical plane.
Mechanism used to deform the tire tread and to control the depth of the notches.
The post 31 has journals 49 acting as supports and pivots for the arm 33 which is biased by an air cylinder 50 fixed to the post 31 by a bracket 51. The piston rod is attached to the tongue 53 fixed to the arm 33 and pivot on it. The arm 33 pivots in a plane axially offset from the wall 54 of the tire 28 and has a laterally extending member 55 to which is attached a member 56 which carries the device for deforming the tread of the tire. , which attacks the inner surface of the tire.
The device used to deform the tread of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
tire, shown more clearly in Figures 6 and 7, has two sets of rollers., one set attacking the surface 57 of the tread, the other set the inner surface 58 of the tire, so as to bend the plane, the surface of the tread to curve it and thus bring part of this surface above the plane of the upper edge of the knives. The part 56 attached to the arm 33 preferably comprises several small pins 50, each of which carries a roller 59A attacking the inner surface 58. The rollers 59 are disposed laterally near the rollers 60 and 61 which attack the middle of the surface 57 of the tread. The rollers 60 and 61 can rotate on supports 62 and 63, each of them comprising a pair of brackets 64 and 65.
Each bracket 64 and 65 supports a pair of rollers 66 and 67 disposed on the sides of rollers 60 and 61 to support the shoulder of surface 57 of the tire tread. The supports 62 and 63 are fixed to one of the supports 16 and are arranged respectively on the inner radial and outer radial side of the path of the cutters 20. As previously described, in operating position, the rollers 60 and 61 are arranged above the plane. of the cutting edge of the cutters 20 and the rollers 66 'and 67 are arranged under this plane.
With the arms 33, 34, 42 and 44 in the rest position as shown in solid lines in FIG. 3, the operator places the tire 28 on the rollers 39 and 40 and temporarily holds the tire vertical until under the 'action of the cylinders 37 and 50, the arms 34 and 33 are lowered simultaneously. Under the action of the cylinder 37, the arm 34 is lowered so that the roller 32 comes to rest against the surface of the tread and presses the tire and the rollers 39 and 40 downwards, against the action of the springs 48.
Simultaneously, the cylinder 50 lowers the arm 33 until the rollers 59A contact the inner surface 58 of the crown of the tire and begin to press the surface 57 of the tread.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
against the rollers 60 and 61. Subsequent movement of the rollers 59A causes the surface of the tread to bend or deform around the rollers 60 and 61 until the shoulder 68 of the surface of the tread comes into contact with the rollers 66 and 67 as shown in figure 6 It is clear that when the motor 13 is running and the knife carriage 1 is rotating, the knives 20 only score the shoulder 68 of the tire, and since all the support rollers and the deformation rollers can rotate freely,
the knives 20 arranged in a helicoidal direction will force the tire 28. to rotate around its own axis. When the whole circumference of the surface 57 of the tread of the tire 28 has been cut, the cylinders 37 and 50 are actuated so as to bring the arms 34 and 56 back and the rollers 39 and 40 are pressed towards the top by the spring 48 so as to release the tread 57 from the rotary knives 20.
During notching, the passage of the knives through the tread tends to move the tread in the direction of the travel of the knives indicated by the arrow in figure 6. In order to prevent this movement of the tread bearing, and the resulting inequality of the notches, a stabilizing wheel 69 is mounted so as to be able to rotate about an axis 70, arranged angularly with respect to the plane of the knives 20.
Wheel 69 is in contact with tire wall 54 close to its tread so as to provide additional support preventing lateral displacement of the tire. The axis 70 is supported in a slide 71 mounted on a support 72. The slide 71 comprises a latching device 73 so as to allow the adjustment of the position of the wheel 69 relative to the rollers 60 and 61 to adapt it. to the various tire sizes.
Figures 8 and 9 show a variant of the invention in which the shoulder 68 of the tread of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
-tire 57 is deformed above the plane of the upper edge of the knives 20 and the middle of the tread is deformed under,., this plane so that the knives notch only the middle part of the tire . 'In this embodiment of the invention, the member 56 supports a roller 73' with a convex surface. And the brackets 62 and 63 support rollers 74 and 75 with a concave surface.
It is clear that when the roller 73 'comes into contact with the inner surface 58 of the tire, the surface of the tread deforms against the rollers 74 and 75 and assumes a convex shape, so that the middle portion 76' of the tread surface is substantially below the plane of the upper edge of the knives, and the shoulder 68 is positioned above the plane of the cutting edge of the knives.
It is clear that the invention provides an apparatus for. grip the treads of unmounted tires, some parts of the tread of which must be notched and others must not, this result being achieved in one revolution of the tire with respect to the notching knives.
