REVENDICATIONS.

The present invention relates to an improved double gutter elbow intended for use as a connection between the outlet of a rainwater gutter and the upper end of a downspout, offset horizontally with respect to this outlet.
The improved double gutter elbow according to the present invention comprises two tubular parts, one of the latter fitting telescopically inside the other, these two tubular parts having respectively a fitting member and a male end. at one end, the axes of this socket and of this end being inclined with respect to the axes of the respective tubular parts o The socket is usually provided, on the tubular part of smaller diameter, and the angular arrangement between the socket and its tubular part clean is usually similar to that between the male end and the other tubular part, so that in the assembled position the socket and the end can be arranged with their axes vertical,
or in vertical planes.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which the pin 1 is a side elevational view showing the two main parts of the double bend separated from each other; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken along lines II-II of fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevational view, showing the double elbow applied between a gutter outlet and a downpipe.
Referring to the drawings, the improved double bend comprises two tubular portions formed of lengths of pipe 1 and 2, of diameters such that one telescopically fits into the other. The pipe 1 of lower diameter is provided at one end with a socket 3, the dimension of which allows it to receive the normal tubular outlet 4 of the gutter 5 freezes 3 the axis of the socket 3 represented by the line ab of figo 1, making an angle with that of pipe 1, represented by line od of the figo Parts 1 and 3 include what can be called the female part of the double elbow Pipe 2, of larger diameter is provided, at one end, with an elbow piece 6, and may be provided with a tubular male extension 7.
The diameter of the male extension 7, or the lower end of the elbow 6, (as the case may be) is such that it fits inside the upper end 8 of an existing downpipe 9 (figo 3) which can be an ordinary pipe end, as shown in the drawing, or, alternatively, a conventional socket. The axis of the lower part of the elbow 6 and of the male extension 7 (when they are adjusted), as represented by the lines ef in figo 1, forms an angle with the axis of the pipe 2, and usually an angle similar to that of the ab and cd lines, as shown in fig 1. Parts 2 and 6, and 7 (when fitted) include what may be called the male part of the double elbow.
The socket 3 and the elbow 6 can be cast in metal, for example aluminum, the pipes 1, 2 and 7 being lengths of metal pipe, usually of drawn or extruded aluminum, introduced into the castings, and attached in any suitable manner, for example by welding, or by hot crimping, the castings to the pipes.
Means may be provided, on either of the two parts of the double elbow, to enable it to be secured to the construction, and the means provided for this purpose, in the case indicated, comprises a metal flange.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that 10, for example in aluminum, folded in the shape of a U, and of a suitable dimension to be adjusted and to be able to turn around the elbow 6 of the male part of the double elbow. The elbow 6 can be supplied with a pair of small outer ribs 11 to locate the flange.
A rivet, or bolt 12, extends between the two arms of the bracket 10, as shown, to hold it in position on the elbow 6, and drilled tabs 12 are formed at the ends of the flange for passage. fixing nails, or the like.
When fixing ears, or the like, are provided on, or near the upper end of the downpipe 9, separate fixing means on the double bend, may be found necessary.
The improved double elbow is applied in position with its socket 3 around the usual male end 4 provided at the lower part of the gutter 5 (figo 3), and the lower end of the elbow 6, or the male end 7 inside of the upper end 8, of a downpipe 9, this upper end being united, or provided with a socket as required, but before the final fixing of the gutter ,, or the downpipe, or both, and by adjusting the total length of telescopic pipes 1 and 2, and by tilting the double elbow around the axes ab and ef, it becomes possible to use a small number of double elbows of standard dimension, to cope with very wide variations in the horizontal offset between the gutter outlets 4 and the down pipes,
and it has been found that by using two sizes of improved double elbow, with a maximum total length of pipe, between axes ab and ef, of nine inches and fifteen inches, most, if not all, of the horizontal offsets that can be encountered in practice, can be overtaken.
It will be understood that the two parts of the double bend can also be rotated relative to each other, around the axis cd, so that, for example, the male part can effectively be engaged with a downpipe having an upper end inclined with respect to the vertical, thus often preventing the use of a curve,
The male end 7 of the male part of the double elbow is of sufficient length to allow it to be engaged inside the upper end of a downpipe normally placed, without regard to variations in the vertical height total of the double bend, as the axial length of the telescopic parts 1 and 2 is adjusted.
With the double elbow adjusted and placed in position, the flange 10 is turned over the elbow 6, to force the tabs 13 to assume a position flat against the surface of the construction, regardless of the position of the mounted double elbow. , so that the fixing nails, or any other method of attachment, can be placed.
