<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO PIPE COUPLING DEVICES.
The present invention relates to pipe coupling devices for joining metal pipes, and relates to coupling devices in which a threaded coupling nut in which is retained, so as to be able to turn, a ring, in order to to make it possible to rotate the coupling nut when the ring is in contact with one of the elements of the seal, and in which the ring is caused to expand in a hollow located in front of an annular flange located at the rear end of the nut, the ring being internally tapered.
The bushing can fit over the flared end of a pipe of copper or other comparatively ductile metal, the end intended to be pulled over a correspondingly tapered male end - by screwing the coupling nut onto the thread screw of a threaded member of the coupling, as in the flared pipe joint disclosed in the specification of Belgian Patent No. 392,388, or the ring may fit an externally tapered ferrule or sealing ring, axially movable on the pipe of a straight pipe joint according to figure 4 of the description of the earlier Belgian patent No. 463,928 or as disclosed, for example, in the description of the earlier Belgian patent No. 460. 074 or any other straight pipe joint where use is made of a coupling device as defined above.
The object of the present invention is to reduce the length of the coupling nut and thereby reduce its weight and the consequent cost of the material required for the manufacture of the coupling device without sacrificing any of the advantages of the coupling device. coupling disclosed in the description of Belgian patent No. 392,388.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the present invention, a pipe coupling device as defined above is characterized in that the flange located at the rear end of the nut has a tapered opening which tapers towards the rear, of diameter more larger than the pipe on which it is intended to fit and in that the rotatable ring is in the form of a nozzle having a ring projecting radially and outwardly from the front end of a body part which fits tapered backwardly, outwardly and inwardly, and has a thickness such that it fits through the opening of the rear end flange of the nut and, when the nozzle is expanded into the 'nut, the nozzle is retained so that it can be rotated,
by its ring penetrating into the recess at the front of the rear end flange of the nut while the tapered body part of the nozzle is housed, so as to be able to turn, in the opening of the end back of the nut and the internal surface of the nozzle has a final diameter such that it clamps the flared end of the pipe of a flared pipe joint or the ferrule or seal ring of a pipe joint straight when the joint is made.
This construction of the nut and nozzle has the advantage that the axial length of the ring of the nozzle can be much smaller than the axial length of the ring disclosed in the prior patent descriptions and the axial length. total of the nozzle must not be greater than the axial length of the aforementioned ring without the area of the clamping surface bearing on the flared pipe end or directly on the ferrule or the sealing ring is reduced.
It follows that the length of the nut of the present coupling device is smaller than the axial length of the nut disclosed in the description of the earlier Belgian Patent No. 392,388 by a magnitude equal to the axial thickness. of the rear end flange of the nut, which reduces the amount and cost of metal required, and that this is achieved without any reduction in the length of the thread of the nut.
The present invention will be readily understood with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows in section a pipe joint with a coupling device as disclosed in the description of earlier Belgian patent no. 392,388.
Fig. 2 is a section showing a pipe joint of the same shape and dimensions where a coupling device according to the present invention is applied and clearly illustrates the reduction in the length of the coupling nut.
In both figures, a coupling nut 3 has a thread 4 located in front of an annular hollow 5 whose diameter is greater than the smallest diameter of the thread and the side 5 forms the front face of a flange 6 with an opening and located at the rear of the nut. The coupling nut is arranged so as to be screwed onto a coupling element 7, threaded in a corresponding manner and shown as being conically bored to receive one end of a male end with double taper 8, the other end of which s 'fits in the flared end of a ductile metal pipe 8, or else in an externally conical and movable screw or sealing ring on a straight pipe as figure 4 of the specification of Belgian patent no. 463,928.
Figure 1, the hollow 5 has a depth and axial length such that a ring 10 can be caused to expand into the hollow in front of the brie 6, the ring 10 having a tapered inner surface receding.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
slanting rearwardly, 10a, of a length such that when the pipe joint is made, the ring 10 clamps substantially the entire length of the flared end 9a of the pipe.
Figure 2, the recess 5 has the same depth as Figure 1, but it has a shorter axial length and the flange 6 has an opening 11 tapering conically towards the rear and of greater diameter than that of the pipe 9, so as to be able to accommodate a nozzle which comprises a part 12, forming a body, externally and internally conical, located behind a radially projecting ring 12a, arranged so as to enter the recess 5 when the nozzle is caused to expand in the nut.
The nozzle 12, 12a, like the ring 10, is an element of ductile metal which is not split, which is caused to expand so as to make it occupy its position in the nut, so that it is imprisoned there. - born before the joint is made, and the combined coupling nut and expanded trapped element contained therein can be sold to plumbers and others for use at any time to make a pipe joint.
Figure 2, the total length of the element 12, 12a is equal to the length of the ring 10, figure 1, so that for the same size of the pipe joint, the length x of the coupling nut 3, figure 2, is less than the length x 'of the nut, figure 1, of the thickness y, figure 1, of the flange 6, without any reduction in the length of the thread 4.
The seal shape shown is given only in example 11 may have the shape shown in figure 3 or figure 5 of the description of Belgian patent no.392,388 or the male end may be an integral part of the coupling element 7 as shown in figure 6 of the description of Belgian patent No. 392,388 or the joint may be a straight pipe as shown in figure 4 of the description of Belgian patent No. 463,928 or as revealed in the description of Belgian patent No. 460 074 or any straight pipe joint where use is made of a coupling device as defined above.
