On
EMI4.4

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Simultanément, on
EMI6.2
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

The invention also relates to a device of the rotary type and preferably with multiple stations for the manufacture of cylindrical objects, bottles, cartridges, vials or the like, by. application of the aforementioned method, and remarkable, in particular, in that it comprises in combination, on the one hand, clamping means, such as mandrels, grippers or the like, intended to grip and hold the tube, associated with each other and distributed following workstations, and, on the other hand, means for heating, cutting, forming, etc ... acting successively on said stations, said clamping means being driven, around a substantially vertical axis, with a movement of rotation on themselves, the speed of said rotation being appropriate to the operation which is to be carried out by said means of heating, cutting, forming,
etc ..., said means being successively associated with said clamping means during manufacturing operations.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the aforementioned clamping means, grippers or the like are arranged on plates driven by a rotational movement about a central axis, while the heating, cutting, forming, etc ... are fixed with respect to said central axis.
According to yet another characteristic of the invention, the workstations are arranged in two superposed stages and the grippers or the like of the upper stage are given a relatively slow rotational movement on themselves, while that the grippers of the lower stage are driven by a much faster rotational movement.
Other characteristics of the invention will become apparent from the description which follows.
In the accompanying drawings, given by way of example only, FIGS. 1 and 2 are diagrammatic views of the various successive phases in the manufacture of an article in accordance with the invention;

The tube 1 is thus entrained by the llors 3 in a slowly rotating iiouveuienfc. A lower stop 4 makes it possible, when the jaws 3 are released, to bring

then tightens the. ';. ors 3 on the tube 1 in order to keep it in place.
This first operation constitutes the phase represented by A, fie. 1.
In phuse .'9, we have, ¯; e the lower part 1 'of the tube 1 in the outside 31 of a gripper 2' vertically oriented on the gripper 2 rotating at speed and being able to slide
EMI4.5
v <-r-ic81e; ilent.
The tube 1 is then heated in a zone 6 by a burner 5, while the mandrel 2 'at the bottom of its stroke comes in the high retort position shown at C, fig. 1, the jaws 3 'being
EMI4.6
opened for this operation, then closed again when the: "2 \ l1drin 2 'is in the high position. In phase C, the tube thus held and driven in slow rotation by the two grippers 2 and 2' is heated by a burner 5.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
This softening of the glass in 6 in order to. its fusion is completed in phase D, tube 1 still being held by grippers 2 and 2 '.
In phase E, the gripper 2 'moves downwards, causing the stretching of the softened zone 6 of the tube and the separation of the tube into two elements 1 and 7. Burners 5a and 5b complete this operation, by , allowing to obtain funds 9 and 9.
Phase F shows the gripper 21 brought back to its lowest position. A burner 5c causes the bottom 8 to open by rapid melting or in some cases causes sufficient softening of the bottom 8 so that it can be opened as soon as possible by a suitable tool. A burner 5d completes the finish of the bottom 9 or prepares the pl & nae operation by thickening the bottom, or the blowing operation if it is desired to have a hollow bottom.
In phase G, the tube 1 is opened at 10 while a tool 11 flattens the bottom 9 of the tube 7.
In phase H, only cooling occurs, either natural or using air blown from the ends of tube 1 and section 7.
The operations described above during phases A to H therefore make it possible to obtain a section 7 of which the neck remains to be shaped, in order to obtain the desired bottle.
The shaping of the neck is carried out by a series of operations constituting the following phases: A1B1 ....... H1.
During phase A1, the gripper 2 ′, by opening the jaws 3 ′, lets the element 7 slide through a gripper 2 ″ centered vertically on the gripper 2 ′ and rotating at a higher speed, until this element 7 reaches a stop 12, the jaws 3 "being open.
During phase B1 the jaws 3 "have closed again, causing the tube element 7 in their accelerated rotation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The open lower part of element 7 is heated over a zone 13 by a burner 5 '.
EMI6.1
In phases G1 and D1, this heating is continued until a suitable softening of the zone 13 is obtained. The latter, as shown at 13 ′ and 13 ", undergoes thickening during this softening.
During phase E1, a shaped mandrel 14 is made to act on zone 13 "thus softened, which is introduced inside the tube element 7. This mandrel 14 mounted on a sliding shaft 15 comprises a collar 16 .. Simultaneously, we
EMI6.2
makes act on the sone 13 "a juoletbe or a form tool 17 whose lower face 18 is placed on the upper edge of the collar 16, thus gradually pushing the glass against the mandrel 14 until the desired shape is obtained. making phase F1, the form tool 17 and the mandrel
EMI6.3
14 are eclipsed, while the temperature of the formed neck 19 is raised, to a suitable value by a burner 5 'to allow the next finishing operation.
During phase G1, new form tools, for example
EMI6.4
example m: 10 "u8s with the previous tools and had one designated by the number rings with an index (114 ', 15 *, 16', 17 ', 18') come to operate the finishing of the previously shaped surfaces.
In the final phase H1, the jaws 3 "of the gripper 2"
EMI6.5
open and leave the finished Ci. '<con 20 which is discharged from the machine by gravity or can be taken up by an automatic unloading device.
A variant of the operations which have just been described
EMI6.6
can be carried out in phases E'1, f'1, G'1 'Hl ,, shown in figure 2. In this case, the shaping operations
EMI6.7
of the neck are made by molding according to the system known in the glass art under the name of "pressed-toarné" for example. The opCratjions carried out during phases A, * to D ..
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
previously seen are unchanged.
Starting from the shape of the tube section 7 with a softened 13 "end, the rotation of the gripper 2" is stopped during phase Et 1 * This allows the following operations to be carried out, simultaneously or successfully: - a cylindrical hollow guide 21 comprising at its upper part a collar 22 and centered on le.préhenseur 2 "comes under the end 13" of the tube 7 up to a level such that the collar 22 is located flush with the neck to be formed. a pin 23, the end 24 of which constitutes a mandrel in the form of a slide in the hollow guide 21 and penetrates into the end 13 "; this mandrel is slightly conical, its larger base remaining at the level of the collar 22.
a two-part mold 25,25 'engages the outer part of the end 13 "and gives it the desired shape. The stationary molding operation is then terminated.
In the following phase F'1, the gripper 2 "resumes its rotation around its axis by driving the tube 7 while the mold 25-25 'remains closed. The temperature of the glass decreases, the axis 23 of the inner mandrel can slide downwards and come in 23 '. The taper of the mandrel coming in 24' makes it possible to follow the contraction of the glass during the cooling of the latter.
During phase G'1, the mold opens and comes in 25 "and 25" ', while the assembly of the fluid 21-22, the axis 23 and the mandrel 24 comes in 21 "-22" - 23 "-24".
A reheating burner 5 "makes it possible to carry out a first annealing operation of the neck 19 'of the flask.
The last phase H'1 comprises the same operations for evacuating the finished bottle 20 'as phase H1 seen previously.
FIGS. 3 to 7 show views of a rotary machine making it possible to carry out all the operations which have just been described in a very simple manner.

<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
On the shaft 29 is mounted a second assembly driven around the shaft 29 in a rotational movement opposite to the previous one by a shaft 48, on which is fixed a screw 49 meshing with a pinion 50, integral with a part 51. In its rotation, the shaft 48 therefore drives the part 51 which, in its movement, bears, on the one hand, on the spacer 38 by means of the needle bearings 52, 52 'and, on the other hand , on the spacer 36 and the barrel 41 by the ball bearings 53, and 54 respectively. This part 51 in its rotation drives planet gears 56 via the toothed wheel 55 and the gears 57a (plate j), 58a (heads 46) and 59a (plate 1) via the shafts 60.
The pinions 58a are keyed sliding on the shafts 60 to allow the displacement in height of each head 46.
The trees 60 corresponding to the workstations' a bc .... or a1 b1 c1 ....) .. Pigeons 57a, 58a, 59a have been designated in FIG. 7 by 60a, 60b, 60c .... , mesh respectively with the pigons 57b, 58b, 59b, thus controlling the rotation of the working heads, of the corresponding stages jk l.
A working head is formed on the plate 1 by a hollow shaft 61 in which the glass rod is placed and on which the pinion 59b is fixed. This shaft 61 rotates in a boss 62 of the barrel 47 by means of ball bearings 63 and 63 'and drives a gripper 2 provided with jaws or clamps 3. At stage k, a sliding working head 46 consists of even by a gripper 21 provided with grippers 3 'This gripper slides vertically with the head 46 by virtue of two guide pins 64 and 65 (FIG. 6). The rotation of this gripper is controlled by the pair of panons. 58a and 58b, the latter being integral with the gripper 2'-.
The opening of the grippers 3 and 3 'of the grippers 2 and 2' effected by devices 66 and 66 'can be controlled either by hand or by means of a cam such as the cam 67 (FIG. 5) acting on the device 66 '.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The vertical movement of the gripper 2 'is controlled by a roller. 68 integral with the frame 46 and rolling on a circular cam 69 fixed on a. support 69 'adjustable in height by a sleeve 70 which slides on a vertical shaft 71 which has only been shown at the upper end in FIG.
The position of the frame. 46 as shown in Figure 1 corresponds for example to a heating phase of a glass tube held between the clamps 3 and 3 "(station c). A burner 5 accompanies the two grippers 2 and 2 'for a fraction of the circumference. This burner 5 is on a tube 72 connected by a flexible pipe 73 to the air-az mixture supply pipe 74. This is fixed to a plate 75 supporting the burner holder 76 in which the tube 72 can slide. The burner holder can oscillate with the tail 77 about a substantially vertical axis and be adjusted in height by a device acting on the plate 75, and not shown.
It carries another tube 78 which can also slide, entrusts the tube 72 and carrying at one of its ends an adjustable stop 79 and at its other end a stirrup 80 - in which the tube 72 slides, this stirrup carrying two drive rollers. 81, 81 '.
A spring 82 interposed on the tube 78 between the yoke 80 and the burner holder 76 allows in combination with the stop 79 to fix the travel of the slide of the tubes 78 and 72 and the duration of action of the burner 5.
In its rotational movement, the gripper 2 drives the rollers 81 and 81 'over a certain portion of circumference, thus determining the rotation of the burner 5 around its vertical axis; the whole of the burner holder pivots while remaining oriented towards the axis of the mandrels 3, 3 'as is shown at positions f1 g1 h ... of figure 7. When the drive stops, the return of the holder burner in its initial position is provided by a spring 83, one end of which is fixed and the other attached to a spring holder 84 disposed on the axis 77.
The burner is then in position to act again on the workstation which, in the direction of rotation of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
machine follows the one he just left
The exhaust of the burnt gases coming from the burners 5 'of the lower stage is effected through orifices shown at 85, 85', 85 ", 85" 'provided on the plate 1 (figures and 6).
During a subsequent phase, a head 46 comes in the low position at 46 '. There is shown in Figure 1, in this position 46 ′, the so-called bottom leveling operation), on a tube element corresponding to phase G seen previously.
The leveling device shown comprises a frame 86 oscillating on a support plate 87 about an axis 88. At the base of this axis there is, as for the burner bearing seen previously, a return spring 89. and a spring carrier 90. The frame supports a caliper 91 in which slide two tubes 92 and 93 mounted on a spacer 96. The axis 92 carries two drive rollers 94 and 94 'on which the gripper 2' acts, while that the tube 93 carries the leveling plate 11 mounted oscillating about a horizontal axis 95.
The sliding of the tubes 92 and 93 is regulated by the stopper 97, their return movement being provided by the spring 98, while the oscillatory movements of the plate 11 are determined, on the one hand, by the. roller 99 carried by the rod 100 which, by acting on the upper face of the plate 11 puts it in a horizontal working position, and, on the other hand, by the return spring 101 which, after the leveling operation, returns this plate in an oblique position in which it is no longer in contact with the bottom of the glass tube.
The oscillatory movements of the leveling device around its axis of rotation are analogous to those seen previously for a burner 5, the device remaining oriented towards the axis of the workstation throughout the duration of its action. , then automatically returning to position to act on the next station. i

EMI12.1
On the lower plate, the workstations a, hl jo all comprise a tube 102 whose rotation is cÓlü. # NrI0e by the pairs of pinions 57a-57b the latter being keyed on the tube 102, and determines the rotation of the grippers 2 "solidarity of these tubes.
It can be seen that by a suitable choice of the pairs of pinions 57a-57b and 59a-59b, it is possible to obtain different rotational speeds at the two stages and in particular a more wrinkled rotation of the working heads of the plate than that carried out in stages the and 1.
The jaws 3 "of the grippers 2" are open by means of a

In re., - rd grippers 3 ", and coaxial with them, are arranged grouts, ca, .Lx 103 in which move vertically the axes 15 seen previously comprising at their upper part a collar 16 and a mandrel 14. These pins 15 carry at their lower part a caliper 104 with a roller 105.
This roller rolls on a circular rail 106 adjustable in height.
For this purpose, the rail 106 is connected to a threaded rod 107 mounted
EMI12.3
in a pinion t,; or.i,:, 1.1¯e 108 whose rotation, controlled by a flywheel 109 via a rod 110 and a pinion
EMI12.4
conical 111, of 'ends the i openings of ascent or descent of the tit, e 107, therefore of the lT,: mc1rin 14.
We have rer08nt0 in e1, figure 1, a workstation COrre5.bJ ntl, Ü to 1 "iJge in the form of the neck F ... near chnuf.fE.ge. For this operation, the tr- T¯a. Oscillating shame of a dobby similar to the burners 5, 5 ', seen above, includes a plu.ue 112 supporting an oscillating bracket 113, and two tubes 114 and 115 J.2.ontés COl..Ùi: : - [; Jl1; s in this caliper.
The tube 115 carries a plate 116 sul.aquelle are fixed two rollers 117 and 117 'which can be driven by the gripper 2 ".
The head of the tube 114 carries the forming tool 17 seen above.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
The movements of the tool 17 are determined by the tube 115 thanks to the spacer 118, which links the movements of the two tubes 114 and 115. The position of this spacer is adjusted by the stop 119, and the stops 120, 121 with which she can come in contact. The return is provided by the spring 122 for the tube 114 and 123 for the tube 115.
It can be seen that the gap between the stops 120 and 121 leaves a certain adjustable clearance to which corresponds a delay in the action of the tool 17, which allows this drilling tool to act progressively and to release it before stops the drive by the rollers 117, 117 '.
At the same time that the tool 17 comes into action at the periphery of the neck to be forced, one 'can raise, by adjusting the threaded rod 107, the axis 15 and the mandrel 14 which thus penetrates into the neck. of the bottle to be formed. We. thus carries out phase E1.
The advantage of the peripheral arrangement of the various devices, together with the possible adjustment of the action of each of them on the workstations, lies in the fact that, during the continuous manufacture of the desired objects, the operations are very simplified, from means that there is no individual setting per station. In addition, it is possible to rigorously dose the operations of a production by dividing them into as many phases as necessary, providing for as many stations as there are phases.
Finally, it is possible to extend this process and device to soft-step manufacturing and most articles obtained from glass tubes or rods or the like.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the execution sodas shown and described which have been given only by way of example.
