<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
dans le noyau (fig. 3).
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
6). 7. Un mandrin 17 appliqué contre le
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

In the process of molding a plastic tube as illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 8, a tube blank 1 is threaded onto a sleeve 2 forming the body of a core, the head 3 of which fits onto the end of the sleeve 2 by a conical surface 4. The blank 1 exceeds the the end of the socket 2 as shown in fig. 1. This core with the blank is then placed in a die 5 (fig. 2) in one piece used for molding the head of the tube. The core is centered with the aid of a cylindrical extension 6 of the head 3 of the core, engaging in a corresponding cylindrical housing 7 of the matrix 5. A screw thread 8 is used for forming from the threaded neck of the tube.
An injection nozzle formed of two parts 9 and 10 movable axially relative to each other is introduced

in the nucleus (fig. 3). Part 9 constitutes a sleeve extending axially inside the sleeve 2 of the core with an intermediate space 11 for thermal insulation or for a cooling fluid. Part 10 of the nozzle constitutes a closure member cooperating with the conical inner end of the sleeve 9, the annular space 12 between this member and the sleeve forming an annular channel for the passage of the plastic material.
A pipe 13 is arranged concentrically in a tubular rod 14 manufactured with the closure member 10 and extending axially inside the sleeve 9, this pipe serving to introduce a heating fluid for maintenance. finish the plastic material in the channel 12 at a temperature equal to or greater than that of softening.
The end of the sleeve 9 of the nozzle has a conical bearing surface 15 intended to cooperate with a corresponding surface of the closure member 10 and a conical bearing surface 16 intended to cooperate with a corresponding surface. - Dante of the socket 2 of the core as it will be described below.
The nozzle is then opened by pushing the closure member 10 upwards as shown in FIG. 4. The head of the core 3 moves axially in the die 5 until the extension 6 is fully engaged in the corresponding housing 7. In this position, the space between the core head 3 and the die 5 determines the shape and thickness of the head of the tube to be molded. In addition, an annular passage is opened between the conical surfaces 4 and 15 and the corresponding surfaces of the head 3 and the closure member 10 respectively, communicating the interior of the core with the place of the same. end of the blank
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
tube 1 where the welding is to be done.
The plastic material is then injected under pressure into the channel 12 in the direction of the arrows in FIG. 4 and fills the organ provided for the head of the tube. Said head is thus formed and it is simultaneously welded to the end of the blank 1. The air from the molding space is expelled through orifices or grooves, not shown, making the upper part of this piece communicate. space with the outside of the die or simply by the clearance between 5 and 6. During this operation, the plastic material is maintained at the softening temperature by the heating of the nozzle.
The die 5 can be cooled or maintained at a constant temperature by circulating a fluid (in channels not shown) and the tube blank 1 is thus maintained at a temperature below that of softening. Depending on the case, this cooling is not necessary to obtain this result.
When the molding space is full, the nozzle is closed by moving the sleeve 9 axially until its surface 15 comes to rest against the closure member 10 The sleeve 9 drives the sleeve 2 in its movement. thus the annular passage. having served for the injection of the molding material of the head of: ':' :. :) 3. The plastic material in the die is still under pressure.
The nozzle is then released (fig. 6). The plastic remains under pressure because the sleeve 2 is kept pressed against the head 3 of the core. The molded tube cools by contact with the die 5 and the parts 2 and 3 and the demolding operation can be carried out. For this, the die in one piece, is "unscrewed" to release the screw thread 8 com- me shown in fig. 7. A mandrel 17 applied against the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
extension 6 of the head 3 in the direction of the arrow, holds the head 3 in place while the die is being removed. In order to disengage the tube, compressed air is blown into the interior of the core.
The rod 17 then moves back a little to allow the head 3 to move away slightly from the sleeve 2 under the effect of this pressure, which first releases the tube from this sleeve and then from this head.
Instead of being in one piece, the die could be in several pieces. In this case, the die is released radially for the release of the screw thread. One could also provide an axial clearance combined with a radial clearance of the die.
To carry out the operations described above, use is made, for example, of an apparatus as shown in figs 9 and 10.
'This apparatus comprises a rotating disc 18 carrying six cores 2, 3, in positions I, II, III, IV, V and VI, six members 19 for clamping the dies 5 and four dies 5.
A central mechanism intended to transport the dies from the V position to the I position comprises a guide sleeve 20 mounted in a core 21 integral with the disc 18, a rod 22 capable of sliding in the sleeve 20 and the upper end of which is provided. a stop head 23 to limit the movement of the rod 22 downwards and an arm 24 whose fork-shaped end is intended to engage on the body of the die 5. This arm is retained axially on the rod 22 by a nut 25 screwed onto the threaded end 26 of this rod and a key 27 prevents said arm 24 from rotating around the rod 22.
The clamps 19 are fixed at the ends
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
upper rods 28 mounted to slide and pivot in bearings 29. Each clamping member 19 has a fork-shaped end intended to cooperate with a cylindrical projection 30 of the die 5.
The control mechanisms of the disc 18, the rods 28 and the central rod 22 have not been shown.
The operation of the apparatus described is as follows.
In position I, the tube blank 1 is placed on the core 2, 3, and the die 5 is fed by the central mechanism from position V onto the tube blank. To this end, the rod 22 is lifted by a determined amount, pivoted about its axis until the die comes above the tube blank, then lowered over this blank. The disc 18 rotates 1/6 of a turn and during this rotation the clamping member rotates 90 clockwise from position I then descends to press the die against the disc (position II) .
In position II, the injection nozzle (not shown) is brought into the bush 2 of the core as described previously, this nozzle is open, the plastic material is injected, the nozzle is then closed and then pulled out and the disc rotated by 1/6 turn. Slitting the rotation of the disc, from position II to position III, the mold remains closed.
In position III, stabilization of the molded material, The disc rotates 1/6 of a turn, the mold remaining closed from position III to position IV.
In edition IV, the molded material continues to stabilize. While the disc rotates 1/6 of a turn to move from position IV to position V, the clamping member 19 rotates 900. counterclockwise.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
to release the matrix.
In position V, the matrix is moved away from the core and transported to position I by the central mechanism, as already described. The clamp 19 remains in its lifted and pivoted position during the rotation of the disc from position V to position VI.
In this last position VI, the molded tube is ejected.
The disc rotates 1/6 of a turn with the clamping member 19 remaining in its raised position, to arrive at position I and the cycle of operations begins again.
It is obvious that a great number of variations can be made to the cycle described above; this is how the number of stations can be increased, which would make it possible to accelerate the rate of production by reducing the time for each station.
The stabilization stations can also be increased or reduced by accelerating the cooling by air blast or even by carbon dioxide snow blast.
The die clamping mechanism can be implemented in other ways, for example it can be hydraulic, toggle, lever, etc.
In addition, tightening and loosening operations can be performed at stations reserved for this purpose.
FIGS. 11 to 14 show, on a larger scale, variants of the device for molding the tube, at an intermediate stage situated between FIG. 4 and fig. 5. Die 5 has not been shown for the sake of clarity of the drawing.
In fig. 11 we find the blank 1 threaded on the sleeve 2 of the core, the head 3 of which is spaced from this sleeve to

provide the annular passage bringing the plastic material to the very location of the end of the blank 1. The sleeve 9 of the nozzle, thermally insulated from the sleeve 2 by the space 11, is also spaced from the shutter member 10 , its conical surface 15 coinciding with the conical surface 4 of the sleeve 2 to leave the annular passage free. The head of the tube has just been molded and welded simultaneously to the end of the blank 1, the plastic material still filling said annular passage and the channel 12 of the nozzle.
In the variant of FIG. 12, the core comprises a sleeve 31 on which a head 32 of the core fits. The sleeve 31 could also be integral with the head 32. Holes 33 flared outwardly are drilled in the head 32 near the end of the sleeve 31 onto which the tube blank 1 is threaded, so as to bring the plastic material to the very location of the end of the blank 1. It will be noted that the internal generatrix of each hole 33 is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the core, in order to facilitate demolding. The injection nozzle comprises in this variant, a shutter member 34 pierced with holes 35 corresponding to the holes 33. Concentric sleeves 36 and 37 determine an annular channel 38 for bringing the plastic material to the holes 35.
When the head of the tube is molded, the obturator 34 is pivoted to close the holes 33.
The finished tube then presents inside peripheral projections formed by the plastic material remaining in the holes 33.
In the variant of FIG. 13, the core comprises a sleeve formed of two sliding parts, one 39 fixed receiving the tube blank 1 and the other 40 movable between the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
fixed part 39 and the head 41 of the core. The nozzle comprises a sleeve 42 mounted in the movable part 40 of the core socket and a closure member 43 whose flared end fits on the head 41, an annular passage 45 being formed between the member 43 and the conical surface 42 'of sleeve 42.
The movable part 40 of the sleeve of the core has a conical surface 44 intended to come in the extension of the conical surface of the head 41 defining the inner wall of the head of the tube. When this head is molded, the sleeve 42 - is lifted with the movable part 40 until the conical surface 42 'comes to rest against the corresponding surface of the member 43, thus closing the passage. ring finger 45.
In the variant of the pin 14, the core comprises a movable sleeve 46 having a conical surface 47 directed inwards and determining with the movable sleeve 48 of the nozzle an annular passage 49 for the injection of the plastic material. As in the case of the variant shown in FIG. 13, the sleeve 48 has a conical surface intended to come to rest against the corresponding surface of the obturator member 43 'to close the passage 49. As it goes up, the sleeve 46 closes the passage by pressing against the conical surface. of the head 41 '.
In the process described, the plastic material is injected under pressure from the inside of the tube blank. We will now describe the case where the plastic material is injected from the outside of the blank but always at the very location of the end of this blank to simultaneously form the head of the tube and weld it to said end.
Fig. 15 shows an embodiment of the device for molding the head of the tube from the outside
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
of the blank. This device comprises a core 50 in one piece carrying the tube blank 1, and a die comprising, on the one hand, a head 51 centered on the cylindrical axial extension 52 of the core 50 and, on the other hand, a sleeve 53 which can be moved axially and a part of the inner wall of which comes into contact with the tube blank 1 in the vicinity of its end where the welding is to be done. The remainder of the inner wall of the sleeve 53 then moves away from the tube blank to leave an empty space.
This sleeve 53 has at its end adjacent to the head 51, a conical surface 53 ′ intended to cooperate with a corresponding conical surface 51 ′ of the head 51 and a conical surface 54 against which a corresponding surface of the head 51 is applied. outer part 55 of an injection nozzle, 55 'designating a nozzle shutter member.
The head 51 of the die also has a conical surface 56 cooperating with a corresponding surface of the shutter member 55 '. The outer part 55 and the shutter 55' of the nozzle furthermore comprise suria- these cooperating conicals 53 "respectively 51" which, in the position shown in FIG. 15, extend the tapered surfaces 53 'respectively 51'
The sleeve 53 is shown separated from the head 51 by an annular space 57 for the passage of the plastic material injected by the nozzle with a view to forming the head of the tube.
The outer part 55 of the nozzle comprises an annular chamber 58 for the heating fluid intended to maintain the plastic material at a temperature above that of softening in an annular space 59 provided between the chamber 58 and the obturator member 55 '. and communicating with the passenger 57.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
When the injection of plastic material is completed and the free end of the tube blank 1 is welded to the head of the tube as described above, the sleeve 53 and the outer part 55 of the nozzle are moved axially in the direction arrows until the surfaces 53 'and
53 "are applied against the surfaces 51 'and 51" respectively. The passage 57 is then closed as is the end of the annular space 59 of the injection nozzle, which enables it to be removed without the plastic material escaping. Fig. 15 illustrates the stage of the process following the injection of the plastic material and preceding the closing of passage 57.
For the demolding of the finished tube, the nozzle is withdrawn, the sleeve 53 is then moved away from the head 51 which, in turn, is separated from the core by unscrewing, the tube then being released from the core as already described.
In the variant of FIG. 16, the outer part 60 of the injection nozzle fits on a cylindrical seat 61 formed at the end of a sleeve 62 similar to the sleeve 53 of FIG. 15 and surrounding the tube blank 1 with an intermediate void space f. A shoulder 63 retains part 60 downwards.
The head 64 of the die has a cylindrical surface 65 of the same diameter as the bearing surface 61 on which an interior shutter member 60 'of the injection nozzle fits to form a seal. A pian annular surface (65 'of the head 64 is intended to cooperate with a corresponding surface 62' of the sleeve 62. The outer 60 and inner 60 'parts of the nozzle also have cooperating flat surfaces 62 "respectively 65 "intended to be
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
applied against each other when the sleeve is moved axially in the direction of the arrows to close the nozzle.
The mode of operation of this variant was the same as that of the embodiment shown in fig.15.
By injecting the plastic material at the very end of the tube blank to form the head thereof. by the method described, a softening of said end is advantageously obtained, which is favorable to good welding.
In the known methods where the head of the tube is injected axially from the upper end, the material cools and this head is bonded to the end of the blank rather than a weld like this is the case in the method described.
