<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
ci (fig.18).
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
The present invention relates to an expandable articulated tape that can be applied for utilitarian or decorative purposes, in particular as a watch strap. This ribbon or bracelet is composed of hollow links arranged transversely to its longitudinal direction and preferably having a rectangular section. These links contain springs, which can be compressed in the direction of extension of the bracelet and which are mounted between the transverse walls of the hollow links and intermediate or connecting members connecting two adjacent hollow links and fitting into these hollow links. .
Articulated ribbons of this type are already known which comprise intermediate links in the form of U-shaped stirrups, the wings of which engage in the lateral openings of the section of two adjacent hollow maillons.creux. The wings of the connecting links act, in this case, on flat springs housed
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in the hollow links, or else are themselves elastic.
To prevent the connecting stirrups from emerging from the side openings of the links where they are housed, two opposing stirrups are connected so as to form a ring, or they are fixed in the hollow links by arranging so that the ends of the their wings engage, under the action of a spring, in stop grooves or similar means. In both cases, it is either impossible to remove connecting links to lengthen or shorten the bracelet, or it is necessary to have special tools for this purpose. In the event that the connecting brackets are covered or retained by bent tabs coming from the upper walls of the hollow links, these must be straightened up so that they cannot be folded back without damaging the aesthetics of the bracelet, unless they simply break when folded back.
When the bracelet is twisted, or when it is folded transversely to its direction of elongation; these folded tabs open under the pressure of the stirrups they cover, which is detrimental to the appearance of the bracelet as well as to its quality.
Another drawback of these known bracelets arises from the fact that, during the extension of the latter, intervals between the links are formed, which are not aesthetic since they break the continuity of appearance of the bracelet. It is precisely to remedy this drawback that extensible bracelets have previously been proposed in 3rd where two superimposed layers of links were provided, offset from one another by half the width of an element. The latter have the drawback of having an excessive thickness precisely because of the presence of these two superimposed layers.
Consequently, the object of the present invention is to provide an expandable articulated bracelet which, while being significantly less thick than bracelets with two superimposed layers
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
does not nonetheless present any empty spaces between the links during its extension, so that the continuity of appearance of the bracelet is preserved. The invention also provides for forming the intermediate links connecting the hollow links so that they can be easily unhooked from the corresponding hollow link at any point of the bracelet, then be reintroduced just as easily after addition - the removal of a few links, without unfolding , nor folding of any part.
It is nevertheless necessary that an unexpected unhooking of the intermediate links is impossible and that the bracelet has rounded edges on all sides while having an appearance as continuous as possible from all its angles, both in extension and in contracted.
Finally, the parts making up the bracelet must be simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble, so as to allow their mass production on an industrial scale on automatic machines.
According to the invention, this problem is solved, from the known embodiment, described above, of an extensible articulated bracelet which consists of hollow links connected by /. intermediate links resting against springs housed in the hollow links and which can be compressed flat in the direction of elongation of the bracelet, by providing in one of the walls of the hollow links connecting their walls / transverse, a slot s 'extending transversely to the direction of elongation of the bracelet, intended for the insertion of the parts of the intermediate links introduced into the hollow links, and giving the intermediate links a cup-shaped shape, while the base plates of the intermediate links which are arranged transversely to the length of the strap,
and are offset by half the length of a hollow link, fit tightly against the walls of two
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
adjacent hollow links, however, the walls of the intermediate links which penetrate into the hollow links, and whose free height corresponds to the opening height of the latter, are separated, at least partially, from the bottom plates by slots in which the walls of the hollow links can slide in contact with said bottom plates.
The edges can be given a more rounded shape by bending the bottom plates of the intermediate links in the form of a cup. -
In a first embodiment of the invention, the intermediate links have front surfaces located along the sides of the bracelet, so that when the latter is contracted, the side openings of the sections of the hollow links are covered by the front walls. intermediate links. In this case, the slots separating the walls of the intermediate links of the bottom plate extend over the entire length of the intermediate links.
The walls of the intermediate links which engage in the hollow links can be interrupted, which makes it possible to produce the intermediate links by cutting and folding, It is possible to ensure against accidental unhooking of the intermediate links from the hollow links, by providing for providing the slit in the wall of the latter obliquely to their edges, so that the intermediate links cannot be introduced or extracted until after a strong twist of the bracelet transversely to its direction of elongation. It is possible to provide for the insertion of separate flat springs in the hollow links, between the walls of the intermediate links and the transverse walls of the hollow links, springs which are held there by the front walls of the intermediate links covering the openings of the links. hollow.
In this embodiment, security can also be obtained by giving the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
free width of the hollow links, measured in the longitudinal direction of the bracelet, a dimension greater than twice the opening height of the hollow links and of the walls of the intermediate links housed therein, so that the latter can be erected at right angles to the hollow links, which on the one hand allows the walls of the two intermediate links inserted in a hollow link to be placed side by side against the inner face of the non-split wall of this one and, on the other hand,
insert a U-shaped bar, the central part of which covers the slot made in one of the walls of the hollow link. In this case, it is preferable to fit flat springs bent inwards on the side parts of the U-shaped bar which rests against the transverse walls of the hollow link, springs against which the walls of the intermediate links come to rest after having been tilted to their normal position. The flat springs in question may be attached to side parts of the U-bars or be integral with the latter.
According to a second and a third embodiment of the invention, the cup-shaped intermediate links are open on their faces situated along the sides of the brace-lett, while the openings of the sections of the hollow links are covered by folded tabs of their upper walls.
(; 'is thus that in the second embodiment of the invention, the intermediate link open laterally, in the form of a cup, has a slot on each side near the folds connecting its bottom plate to the side walls, slit which is closed at each end, while the split wall of the hollow links has cutouts extending from the sides of the bracelet, so that the remaining central portions of the split wall can pass through the slits of the middle links and be guided therein when extending the bracelet,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In the third embodiment,
the intermediate link, the front faces of which are open, has at the folds connecting its side walls to the base plate, on each side, two slots starting from the open front sides, while the split wall of the hollow link has a central cutout, so that the remaining parts of the split wall of the hollow links can penetrate into the slots of the intermediate links starting from the front faces of the latter and be guided there during the extension of the bracelet.
In these two embodiments, it is also possible to prevent an unintentional unhooking of the intermediate links by making the slit obliquely to the ridges in the wall of the hollow links so that the intermediate links cannot be inserted or extracted from the hollow links until after. a strong twist of the bracelet transversely to its direction of elongation.
In the third embodiment, where the wall of the hollow links is cut in the middle, it suffices that only one of the remaining parts thereof has an oblique slot, while the other optionally has a slot perpendicular to the slot. extension direction of the bracelet, or does not include one. This increases the safety against accidental unhooking without complicating the desired interchangeability of the links. In the second and third embodiments, separate flat arched springs are provided between the walls of the intermediate links and the transverse walls of the hollow links, which are held by folded tabs of the walls; upper hollow links.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text making it clear. - of, part of said invention.

Fig. 18 is a perspective view corresponding to FIG. 17, of another embodiment of a hollow link.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 6, the articulated stretch bracelet is composed of hollow links 10 of rectangular cross section whose transverse walls press closely against each other when the bracelet is contracted. In one of the walls 12 connecting the transverse walls, there is provided a longitudinal slot 13 extending perpendicular to the direction of extension of the bracelet, so that the wall 12 is subdivided into two halves 12a and 12b. The hollow links 10 are open at the front faces located along the edges 1 of the bracelet. These links can be made by cutting and folding. The intermediate links 20 connecting the hollow links 10 are cup-shaped, as shown in fig.4.
The intermediate links are closed at their front ends by front walls 21, while their walls 22a and 22b are cut in the middle. The base of the bowl is formed by a bottom plate 23 which is separated from the walls 22 by cutouts 24 extending over the entire length of the intermediate links, so that the bottom 23 is only connected to the front walls 21 .
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Accordingly, the intermediate links can be easily obtained by cutting and folding.
The facing walls 22b and 22a of each of the two neighboring intermediate links are introduced into the slot 13 of a link 10, then they are straightened at a right angle, as seen in FIG. 3, so that the inner faces walls 22b and 22a come to rest against the inner face 12 opposite to that which has the slots 12a, 12b. For this to be possible, the opening width of the links is more than double their opening height while the height of the walls 22a and 22b of the intermediate link is less than the open height of the hollow link 10. It is then inserted into the link 10, a U-shaped bar 30 fitting exactly in the transverse opening (fig. 5 and 6), so that its central part 31 covers the slot 13.
The lateral parts 32 of the U-shaped bars 30 carry inwardly curved flat springs 33 which, after having tilted the intermediate links from the position shown in FIG. 3 to that of fig.l and 2 apply elastically against the outer faces 22a and 22b of the intermediate links 20, so that when the bracelet is stretched, they are subjected to compression giving them a rectilinear profile. gne and that at this moment they request the bracelet to contract.
To add or remove links, it suffices to bring two intermediate links 20 to the position of fig.3. We can then slide the U-shaped bars 30 out of the link 10, then unhook the intermediate links through the slot 13.
The springs 33 can be fixed in the middle of the side parts 32 (fig.5) or else be formed from the material of which these side parts are made by suitable incision and folding. They can also be mounted sliding in
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
slides formed by folding tabs 34 of the side parts 32 around their ends.
The height of the walls 22a and 22b corresponds to the height which remains in the links after the insertion of the U-shaped bars 3C therein, so that, when the bracelet is contracted, the front faces 21 of the intermediate links 20 cover them. side openings of the hollow links giving them a firm appearance on all sides.
The elements 10, 20 and 30 are assembled in such a way that the slot 13 r.- opened by the central part 31 of the U-bar 30 inserted in the hollow link 10 is located below, so that the bottom plate 23 of the intermediate cup-shaped link 20 rests tightly on the outside against the respective wall halves 12a and 12b of two neighboring hollow links 10 threaded into the slots 24. The elements can also be assembled together. so that the covered slots 13 are placed on top of the strap. As can be seen in fig. 3, it is also easy to turn the links 10 by 180 when they are assembled, so as to bring on the top a slot which was located below to the origin, or vice versa.
It is thus that decorative effects can be obtained on the visible face of the bracelet when the slot 13 is on the top, by giving the central part 31 of the U-shaped bars inserted into the link a color different from that of the halves of the chain. visible walls 12a and 12b. We can naturally give the slot 13 very diverse cutouts to enhance the decorative effect.
The bottom plates 23 of the intermediate links 10, which press closely against the bottom walls 12, or 12a and 12b, which are offset by half the width of a link from the links 1C, form
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
during the extension of the bracelet a bridge over the intersections which form between the transverse walls 11 of two neighboring links, so that the bracelet maintains a continuous appearance even when it is stretched. So that the edges are rounded, the base plates 23 can also be rounded, for example recessed in the shape of a bowl, as shown in FIGS. 10 and 16.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 7 to 12 the articulated bracelet is made up of hollow links 40, while in the embodiment according to FIGS. 13 to 18 it is formed by similar links 80, which may be of rectangular section, the transverse walls 41 or 81 of which are applied directly against each other when the bracelet is contracted. In one of the walls 42 or 82 connecting the transverse walls 41 or 81, a slot 43 or 83 is made perpendicular to the direction of elongation of the bracelet, which divides the split wall into two halves. The side openings extending along the edges of the bracelet, and which correspond to the section of the links 40 and 809 are closed by tabs 44 or 84 folded down from the wall 42 or 82 (upper) which does not include slot.
As seen in Figs. 9, 10 and 15 and 16, the intermediate links 50 or 90 respectively connecting the links 50 or 9C have the shape of cups, and are open at their front sides. Their walls 51a and 51b or 91a and 91b can be inserted inside the links 40 or 80 by the slots 43 or 83, by introducing two facing walls 51b, 5la or 91b and 91a of two intermediate links 50 or 90 in a link 40 or 80, while the wall which has remained free of each of the two intermediate links is inserted into the link preceding and following the link in question.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
In this assembly, the bottom plates 52 or 92 connecting the walls 51a, 51b or 91a, 91b of the intermediate links 5C or 90 are then offset by a desi-width of the link and press closely against the walls. lower links of two neighboring links so that by lengthening the bracelet they cover the voids which form between two consecutive links, thus safeguarding the closed appearance of the latter even in the extended state.
So that the walls of the intermediate links introduced into the hollow link can move in the direction of extension inside the latter, the intermediate link 50 presents, in the embodiment of FIGS. 7 to 12, in the vicinity of the folding edges which form the transition between the walls 51a and 51b and the bottom plate 52, slots 53 closed at their two ends, while the slotted wall 42 of the hollow link has cutouts 45 starting from edges of the bracelet, so that the regions 46a and 46b separated by the slot 43 can be introduced into the slots 53 of the intermediate links 50 where they are guided during the extension of the bracelet.
The bottom plate 52 of the intermediate links 5C can be flat, as seen in fig.9, or else be convex as in fig.10 in order to round the edges.
The slot-43 made in the lower wall of the hollow link can, as in fig. 11, work parallel to the folding edges of the links 40, or, as can be seen in fig. 12, extend obliquely to the latter , so that the walls 51a, 51b of the links 50 cannot be inserted or withdrawn through this oblique slot until after having strongly turned the bracelet obliquely to its direction of elongation.
By this means, we eliminate any possibility of stall
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
accidental links, which does not seem impossible in the embodiment according to fig.ll, where the slot 43 works parallel to the folding edges, while the links nevertheless remain interchangeable.
Preferably the width of the intermediate links 50, measured between their walls 51a and .51b will be less than the width of the walls of the hollow links so that the latter do not press against each other when the bracelet is contracted. By this means, one avoids pinching the hairs when threading the bracelet on the wrist. De -plus ;, the walls of the intermediate link threaded in, the hollow link are then placed laterally to the slot 43, when the latter works parallel as in fig.ll, and this, that the bracelet is distended or contracted.
To unhook an intermediate link, it is then necessary to lengthen the bracelet, then push the intermediate link to be removed away from the direction. tion of elongation until its wall comes to be placed above the slot.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 13 to 18, the intermediate link 90 has on each side in the vicinity of the ridges connecting the walls 91a and 91b to the bottom, two slots 93 starting from the open front sides. For its part, the wall 82 of the hollow link has a corresponding central cutout 85, so that the remaining portions 86a and 86b of the split wall of the hollow link can pass through the slots 93 formed in the intermediate links and be guided therein during the extension of the bracelet.
Here again the bottom 92 of the intermediate link can be flat thimble in fig. 15, or rounded as in fig. 16. In addition, the slit in the wall 82 may extend parallel to the folding edges (fig. 17) or contribute obliquely to them.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
here (fig. 18). It is even possible to make more sure against an unexpected unhooking of the intermediate links 90 by making an oblique slit in only one of the remaining walls 86a.
86b.
After having twisted the bracelet obliquely to its direction of elongation, one can thus pass one of the halves of the wall of the intermediate link, for example the part
91b 'by the oblique slot to take it out or in, while the other half 91bll is slid for example, under or out of the unslit part of the hollow link. This unslit half of the hollow link will preferably be formed of two halves 86a and 86b the edges of which abut closely, so that the hollow link can here again be produced by cutting and folding. Moreover, there is nothing to prevent an oblique slot from being made in one of the remaining halves of the wall of the hollow link, while another oblique slot facing away from or concurrently parallel to the edges is formed in the other.
The observations made in connection with the embodiment of FIGS. 7 to 12 are also valid for the embodiments of FIGS. 1 to 6 and 13 to 18.
Thus, in particular, in the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 6, it is possible to do away with the U-shaped bars 30 and to provide, for example, oblique slots in the lower wall of the hollow links. In this case, separate springs p @ ets are inserted in the links 1C to replace the springs 33 fixed to the bars 30. In the embodiments of FIGS. 7 to 18, separate framed flat springs 70 or 100 are also inserted into the hollow links, placing them respectively between an intermediate link wall and a hollow link wall, so that they take on a rectilinear profile when latching. extension of the bracelet.
It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the embodiments which have just been described,
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
in particular by substitution of equivalent technical means, without going beyond the scope of the present invention for this.
