<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

2 ) Vitesse.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
1 ) par deux pignons coniques situés à l'intérieur de la sphère extérieure (figure 12), ce, qui, est intéressant en cas de sortie lente;
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

The object of the present invention is a "friction" speed variator, of the type in which one of the shafts is integrally connected in rotation to a member having a spherical surface in contact with a series of rollers or the like capable of rolling. together without sliding on the spherical surface and arranged in a ring concentric with said spherical surface, this series of rollers forming a team whose axis has an adjustable angular position relative to the axis of rotation of the sphere, variable speed drive characterizes by a second spherical surface, concentric with the first
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and providing the reaction of the support of the rollers on the first spherical surface,
which makes it possible to reduce the fatigue of these rollers and to increase the power transmitted in relation to the bulk.
According to the invention, one can provide various embodiments comprising the general arrangement above and in particular an embodiment characterized in that a cap is removed at the blade of the spherical surface for the passage of the means ensuring the connection. in rotation between the annular assembly and the corresponding shaft of the variator, as well as for the part -age of the adjustment means of the mobile assembly of rollers.
According to another embodiment, the member with an outer spherical surface is in two parts leaving between them a space for the passage of the connecting means between the annular assembly and the corresponding shaft of the variator, as well as for the passage of the means of roller crew adjustment.
In this case, are the two outer hemispheres preferably mounted in an adjustable manner with respect to one another, in order to allow either the adjustment of the force of application of said spherical surface on the rollers of the assembly. ring finger, i.e. catching up the play.
The adjustment of the tightening between the spherical surfaces and the rollers of the annular assembly or the adjustment of the play can also be obtained by adjusting the diameter of the annular assembly. For this purpose, the annular assembly comprises a split ring or it is made up of two or more parts.
The invention also relates to a variable speed drive of the type in question, characterized in that the rollers are inclined relative to the radii of the spherical surfaces passing through the center of these rollers, so that the bearing reactions of these rollers on said spherical surfaces are exerted according to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
different radii to form a tilting torque of the rollers which tends to oppose the reverse torque resulting from the rotational force which they have to transmit, which makes it possible to increase the power capable of being transmitted.
The invention also comprises multiple characteristics which will appear in the description below:
The invention extends to all these characteristics and their various possible combinations.

1- Kinematic diagram.
The kinematic diagram of the variators in accordance with the invention is set out below with reference to FIG. 1, which schematically shows the outer sphere S1 and its axis of rotation XX ', the inner sphere S conenetrical to Si , the ring carrying the rollers M1, M2 ... tangent to these two spherical surfaces and whose axes are all told in the same plane. This ring is centered on an axis YY 'and it is integral in rotation with an output shaft HH by a set of bevel gears F1 F2.
When the sphere S1 rotates, demonstrate that it drives the ring in a rotation around YY 'via the rollers M1, M, without the rollers Ml slipping or slipping, M2 ... over-Si, and more or less> quickly depending on the orientation of the ring. The geometry shows that the rollers in turn drive the sphere S2 in a third movement which is a rotation around a certain axis ZZ '. In this movement the rollers roll on the sphere S2 without slipping or skidding. The ZZ 'axis is in the plane of the XX' and YY 'axes and takes a position such that the YY' axis is constantly bisecting XX 'and ZZ'. In these movements there are only bearings without friction apart from the friction of the wipers B 1 B2 which can be made very low by good centering.
The practical interest of the inner sphere clearly appears to be to withstand the reaction of the support of the rollers on the outer sphere and consequently to reduce the fatigue of the ring gear.
The interest of the bearing sphere moreover emerges from the study of the forces on the rollers, a study which is summarized below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
II- Stresses on the rollers.
If we consider (figure 2) each of the rollers M of the annular assembly, we can see that it is the seat of two contact reactions: - one in M1 composed of the driving force F printed by the sphere external S1 and the support reaction
R1 of the roller on Si.
- the other in M2 composed only of a reaction of support R2 on the inner sphere S2. reaction which is equal and opposite to R1.
The ball bearings on which the roller is generally mounted will therefore not have to undergo reactions due to R1 and R2 which cancel each other out. They will only have to undergo the action of F, which shows the interest of the support sphere S2.
In the previous case illustrated in FIG. 2, the rollers are each located in a plane passing through the center 0 of the spherical surfaces so that F gives rise on the axis of the roller to a force F and to a tilting torque.
In the following case illustrated in FIG. 3, the rollers of the mobile assembly are inclined with respect to the radii of the spherical surfaces S1 and S2 passing through the center of each roller, so that the points of contact Ml M2 and the reactions R1 R2 are located on different radii. Therefore the two reactions R1 R2 will have a zero resultant but will generate a tilting torque in the opposite direction to that which results from F. The dimensions of the galler can then be chosen so that the torque R1 R2 on l the roller axis cancels the torque F.
In this case, the axis is no longer only the seat of the force F which is the driving form transmitted to the annular assembly of the rollers. A simple stopper having a load capacity corresponding to F is then sufficient to ensure the bearings of cheerfulness and its
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
resistance. In this way, flats can be used and more can be put on the ring screed, which allows a higher power to be transmitted.
This inclined arrangement of the rollers requires in principle to rotate 1 T annular crew in the sant

of travel 1 and to renounce direction of travel 2 '. Practice, zerr .: t :, if the direction of travel 2 is not used very much, as in the case of the reverse gear of a vehicle for example, the operation will be correct in both directions.
III- General technical characteristics.-
Various examples of practical implementation of the invention are shown in FIGS. 4 to 24. Before describing them in detail, the general technical characteristics of these variators will be given below.
1) Power-
The transmissible driving torque, measured on the ring, is proportional to the radius of the driving sphere, to the number of rollers, to the force applying each ga.let on the driving sphere, and to the coefficient of friction of the rollers on the driving sphere.
To have a space-saving device, we have to

a decrease the radius of the driving sphere. If you have a powerful device, it is in your interest to increase: - the -number of pebbles by using very thin pebbles, which lends itself particularly well to the feline pebbles solution, illustrated on. figure 3, - the force applying the roller to the driving sphere, eh using

rubber on rough ceramic. These sometimes contradictory conditions can be chosen and determined by technical tests for each example embodiment.
As the operation of the device is reversible, it is possible to use the shaft integral with the driving sphere or the shaft integral with the annular assembly as the driving shaft. The receiving shaft is then either the shaft @ of the annular assembly, or the shaft of the driving sphere which must then be called the receiving sphere.
2) Speed.
The range of output speeds is a function of the amplitude of variation of the angle of the two shafts. Depending on whether the output shaft is that of the sphere or that of the ring, the output speeds will be lower or greater than the input speed. In the case of a driving sphere, and if the ring shaft can be tilted enough on the shaft, the ring will roll closer and closer to the poles of the sphere and slower and slower. The speed will be canceled when the ring passes through the poles and will become negative (reverse) when the ring passes the other side of the poles.
3) Support reactions.
Reactions of the forces present are absorbed in a more or less advantageous manner depending on the practical arrangement adopted: if we divide the outer sphere into two independent parts (figure 20 for example) we create axial and radial reactions on the axis of the sphere but there is a possibility of catching up the play by bringing the two hemispheres together.
If we remove a cap at the pole to pass the shaft of the ring (figure 21 for example), the reactions
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of the ring On the expensive ones will be asymmetrical when the ring approaches the pole.
4) Adjustment.
Two categories of movements can be used to vary the inclination of the ring: a) Rotation of the plane of the ring around an axis of its plane. This movement can be achieved by a homokinetic joint (figures 18 and 24). It has the advantage that the adjustment can be done at rest, the input and output shafts being at rest; it also has the advantage of being done without work against the motor torque, that is to say with a very low force, which may be advantageous for automatic speed adjustments by servomotors. b) Rotation of the plane of the ring around an axis outside its plane. This arrangement has the advantage of great simplicity (Figures 16, 17 and 20, 21, 22, 23).
During adjustment, the input and output shafts rotate relative to each other; in other words, the adjustment is made against the engine torque, that is to say requires a certain force.
5) Secondary forces. a) Roller rotation inertia.
, Each roller rotates on its axis alternately in one direction and the other, its movement must therefore be accelerated and braked alternately., This effect is only annoying for very high speeds, or for variations. very large dimensions. This effect also creates a tendency for the ring to approach the poles of the motor sphere, but this tendency is weak. b) Gyroscopic couple: each roller is a gyroscope whose plane rotates. It creates gyroscopic couples,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
but these are weak and do not work against the engine torque,
IV - Description of some examples of realization.
Figures 20 to 24 give by way of indication some mechanically achievable arrangements, and resulting from the combinations of certain elementary arrangements explained below, taking into account the fact that the motor shaft can be indifferently that which is integral in rotation with the outer spherical surface or that which is integral with the annular assembly of rollers:
A) The movement entry E on the side of the spherical surface is made:
1) directly and without gears (figure 4), the shaft being connected to a pole of the outer sphere and the output being effected by the opposite pole whose cap is removed.
2) directly on an outer hemisphere (Figure 3) 'of the coaxial pinions engaged with toothed crowns of the hemispheres in order' to re, ndre integral in rotation.
3) directly on an outer hemisphere, the two hemispheres being made integral in rotation by conical pinions in engagement with toothed crowns of each hemisphere (figure 6),
4) on coaxial drive gears meshing with crowns of the hemispheres (figure 7)
5) on a motor pinion with a pair of bevel gears meshing with toothed crowns of the hemispheres (figure 8), this arrangement making it possible, if necessary, to align the input E and output B shafts .
B) The exit S of movement on the side of the annular crew is carried out:
1) on the side of a pole of the outer sphere whose
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
cap is removed (Figure 9), which offers advantages of simplicity by removing the pole stops.
2) on the equator side (figure 10), the outer sphere being in two symmetrical parts, this arrangement giving a better balanced mechanism.
3) on the side of a tropical line (figure 11), which makes it possible to have the direct connection - 1/1 ratio.
C) The coupling of the annular assembly with the corresponding shaft is carried out:
1) by two bevel gears located inside the outer sphere (figure 12), which is interesting in the event of slow exit;
2) by two bevel gears outside the outer sphere (figure 13),
3) by ring gear on the ring, and pinion inside the outer sphere '(figure 14), which is interesting, in case of' repide exit,
4) by a sliding joint and a homokinetic joint inserted on the shaft connected to the ring (figure 15). This device can be used for example on position adjustment servomotors.
D) The device for adjusting the position of the annular roller equipment with respect to the spherical surfaces is achieved: 1) by a shaft making a fixed angle with the plane of the ring and allowing the ring to rotate freely in its plane and to which it is linked, for example, by a ball bearing.
This shaft is opposite to the output shaft, and the adjustment is made by rotating this shaft (figure 16),
2) by a sleeve surrounding the output shaft and making a fixed angle with the plane of the ring, allowing the ring to rotate freely in its plane, being connected. this annexed
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
for example by a ball bearing. The adjustment is made by rotating the sleeve around its axis (figure 17), 3) by a bearing moving in a groove and serving as a bearing for the output shaft.
The adjustment is made by moving the bearing in this groove (figure 18),
4) by a fixed ring in rotation, connected to the ring of the roller assembly by a ball bearing for example, and the orientation of which is adjusted by a plunger which is articulated therein (figure 19).
Of course, some of these .solutions are not or hardly compatible with each other. The table below shows which ones seem the most interesting:

Various embodiments of variators according to the invention are shown in more detail in Figures 20 to 24.
The drive shown in figure 20 uses for the input shaft E solution 4 of paragraph A above, for the output shaft S solution 2 of paragraph B.
The coupling of the ring is carried out according to solution 1 of paragraph C and the adjustment of the position of the ring. according to solution 1 of paragraph D.
In a more detailed iaçon this variator comprises a sphere in two parts 51 52 outside the annular assembly 8, 9. The driving and driven shafts are located in perpendicular directions, and the control of the external driving sphere takes place by coaxial cylindrical gears.
The inner bearing sphere 31 rotates freely between
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
rubbers B1 B2 and supports the bearing reaction of the rollers.
In addition, this variator comprises a device ensuring that the sphere is clamped against the rollers which is proportional to the engine torque. To this end, the drive gears 32, 33, of the two hemispheres 51, 52 are of helical size and arranged so that their axial reaction tends to bring the two hemispheres closer to one another.
The axial reaction of these pinions is transmitted to the ball bearings of the bearings in which the two hemispheres 51, 52 are journaled; the transmission can be provided for example by a crankshaft system shown schematically at 34, 35 in FIG. 20.
The adjustment of the inclination of the annular assembly relative to the spherical surface is obtained by rotating the plane of the ring about an axis located outside its plane, the adjustment force being opposed to the engine torque. The transmission between the adjustment pin 24 and the ring 8 is ensured in this case by an annular part 36 fixed angularly to the arbor 24. This annular part rests on the ring 8 by means of a ball stop 37.
Figure 21 shows another embodiment of a variable speed drive in which the input shaft is established according to solution 1 of paragraph A above, the output according to solution 2 of paragraph B, the cutting the ring according to solution 1 in paragraph C and adjusting the position of the ring according to solution 2 in paragraph D.
In figure 22 are used solutions 2, 2, 1, 1 of paragraphs A-B-C-D.
In figure 23 solutions 2, 2, 3, 1 are used and in figure 24 solutions 5, 2, 3, 4 of the same paragraphs A-B-C-D above.

Of course, it is also possible, from the elementary solutions indicated above, to produce many other combinations giving speed variators each having its own advantages and suitable for the applications which it is desired to make.
Likewise, it is obviously possible to change the practical execution in its secondary details without departing from the invention for this.
