<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The lighting poles often need to be of great height in order to allow good distribution of the light from the light source, which is attached to the top of the pole. This great height is the cause of known difficulties relating to the maintenance and replacement of the light source.
The invention obviates these drawbacks and resides in that the mast is composed of a fixed part, the height of which reaches approximately half the height of the mast, and of a movable part, the length of which is substantially equal to the height of the mast and which, towards the middle of its length, is mounted to pivot about a horizontal axis.
When this movable part assumes the vertical position, its lower branch, the section of which preferably has a rectangular shape, is housed in a recess fitted in the fixed part, which has, approximately, a triangular section decreasing from the bottom towards at the top, the upper branch of the movable part also preferably has a section approaching the triangular shape, to adapt harmoniously to that of the lower part.
Other features of the invention will appear in the description of the lighting pole which follows and with reference to the appended drawing; they are characterized in the following claims.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, and
Fig. 2 shows a rear view of the mast
Fig. 3 gives, on a larger scale, an elevational view of the middle part of the mast, partially in section.
Fig. 4 drawn on the same scale, represents in vertical section the lower part of the mast, and the
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 represent sections along lines V-V, VI-VI and.VII-VII of Figures 3 and 4.
The fixed part of the hollow mast is designated by the number 8. It has approximately a triangular section, which, according to use, narrows from bottom to top. At the upper end of this part (8) is fixed a horizontal pin (9) which forms the hinge of the mobile part (10) of the mast. In the normal position, this part is in a vertical position, as indicated: by the continuous lines of figs. 1 and 2.
At its upper part it is provided with a connector (11) which can rotate around the longitudinal axis of the mast and which can be fixed in any desired position. In this connector are arranged two tubes (12 and 13) diametrically opposed to one another and which can rotate about their common axis so that they can be fixed in the desired positions. At the free ends of these tubes are mounted the lamp frames. Depending on the model of these fittings and the distribution of the light desired, the lamps can be mounted either above or below the common axis of the tubes (12 and 13), and this axis can cross the spindle forming hinge from different angles. '.
The upper branch of the movable part (10) has a section which tapers upwards and which corresponds to the section of the fixed part (8) by adapting harmoniously to it, see fig. 5.
The lower branch has a rectangular section (figs.
6 and 7) normally housed in a recess fitted in the fixed part of the mast (8) so that the outer side matches the open part
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the triangular profile of the said part of the mast At the height of the pin (9) the fixed part of the mast consists only of a fork, between the arms of which the movable part of the mast can pivot freely and approximately at an angle of 180. In fig. 1 the position of the rotating part (10) is shown in dotted lines after the latter has made approximately half a turn, so that the connector 11 is located near the ground and thus the lamps are easily accessible. In this position, the rotating part (10) rests against an inclined plane (8A) of the fixed part (8).
The upper branch of the movable part of the mast has a slightly greater torque relative to the spindle than the lower branch. This part thus tends to rotate around the hinge pin, in order to prevent this part from coming too suddenly in contact with the inclined end-of-travel plane, it is provided at its: - lower end a flange (14) with an opening for fixing a cable. By threading this cable, the upper part can be tilted carefully.
Fig. 4 shows that a pawl (15) is pivotally mounted on the flange (14) which, when the rotating part of the mast assumes the normal vertical position, rests on a cross member (.16) of the fixed part (8), and in such a way that the pawl hook is still some distance from the cross member. In said position the rotating part of the mast is retained by a bolt (17) fixed near its lower end. This bolt engages with a little play in a hole of the fixed part (8) and its end is threaded to allow the fixing of a nut with locknut (18) so that it cannot come out. of the orifice.
In order to tilt the mobile part, it is first necessary to unscrew the nut and the locknut (18) from the bolt (17); the movable part (10) can then tilt but is immediately retained by the pawl (15) so the hook takes on the cross member (16). After the ratchet has been raised, it is possible, by threading the cable, to lower the fitting (11).
For complete safety, access to the nuts (18) will be protected by a cover with a lock, the key of which will be kept in a safe place, no unauthorized person can thus tilt the movable part of the mast.
The two parts of the lighting pole are still connected by a bent tube (19) for the passage of the electric wires from the fixed part to the mobile part of the pole, thus the electrical conductors are protected from bad weather.
It should be noted that the installation of the lamps by means of the connector has an obvious relation with the possibility of tilting the part of the mast (10). In fact, once the mast has been raised, the said part can only turn in a single plane in the choice of which, given the local circumstances (for example the presence of signal boxes on the sites of the railway) we cannot is not free to act. Depending on the position of this plane, the fitting (11) must be arranged to obtain the desired distribution of light.
