<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

a slide bar which turns the worm wheel 48 integral with the drive shaft 49. On the latter, two pinions 50 and 51 turn idle, respectively controlling the drive pinion of the solidary rack of the longitudinal carriage and the screw controlling the movement of the cross slide.
The two pinions have claws, respectively 15 and 13, intended to engage selectively with the claw nut 52 sliding on the part of the shaft 49 disposed between the two pinions 50 and 51 and which is splined or which has a groove key for this purpose.
The claw nut 52 moves longitudinally '- from the neutral position shown in fig. 4 to come into engagement by claw lock with the claws of one or the other of the pinions 50 or 51 by driving @ t the corresponding carriage and this movement is effected by the action of the bifurcated rod
55 bearing in an eccentric part surrounding the clutch hub of the dice
53 held in place by the pins 54 carried by the fork of the tie. The rotation of the rod 55 around its axis in one or the other direction forces the dice 53 to push one or the other series of claws of the nut towards the claws of the corresponding pinion.
When engaging, this movement of the dice firstly compensates for the clearance provided between the dice 53 and one or the other series of teeth 13 or 15 as shown at 56 and at
11, before performing the actual clutch in 12-13 or 14-15. The bifurcated rod 55 can be controlled either by hand for the clutch or disengagement, by means of the handle 9 or, according to the invention, for the automatic disengagement by the erasable pistons coming into contact with the corresponding gauges.
We will first describe the transmission corresponding to the sliding piston engaging with the stop gauge L of the longitudinal carriage as described above. The sliding piston 5 integral with the sliding barrel 10 acts by means of a connecting rod. with spherical ends 27 on the doorbell lever 28 (fig. 3). This transmits the displacement which is applied to it with amplification by means of a second link 31 held by its spherical ends 30 and 32 respectively in the doorbell lever and in a recess of the bifurcated rod 55 at 32. It is seen immediately that the removal of the sliding piston rotates the rod 55 to ensure the disengagement of the pinion 50 by a movement of withdrawal of the claws 14 of the nut.
The relatively sudden movement necessary for the correct disengagement is ensured by virtue of the bifurcated rod 55 being normally maintained in its neutral position shown in FIG. 4 by the engagement of two levers with recesses provided in a cam 16 integral with the bifurcated rod. This device shown in detail in FIG. 2 comprises the two levers 17 pivoting around fixed points 18 and each carrying at its free end a roller 19 penetrating into the diametrically opposed notches 21 of the cam 16 to immobilize, as has been said, the bifurcated rod 55 and consequently, the claw nut 52 in the disengaging position.
When he wants to engage, the worker acts on the lever 9 so as to cause the cam to pivot in the direction of the arrow 24, for example, to force the ramps 22 of the notches 21 to push the rollers 19 outwardly. against the action of the spring 20 connecting the two levers 17 and applying the said rollers on the cam. Following the clutch movement caused by the manual operation of the lever 9, the rollers 19 come to rest on the periphery 25 of the cam, and the movement of the lever 19 continuing, one obtains the engagement of the pinion 50.
It will be noted that the clearance 11 between the dice of the rod 55 and the core is such that the rollers 19 may have gone beyond the points 33 defining the ends of the notches 21 of the cam before the actual clutch takes place; conversely, at the time of manual or automatic disengagement by the mechanism described, the claws 14
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
remain engaged when the rollers 19 pass the points 33, it is only when the rollers 19 are engaged on the ramps 22 of the cam 16, i.e. when the spring 20 acts most forcefully that the dice 53 having gone through the clearance 56 in the groove of the nut 52, suddenly disengaging the claws 14 or 15. Moreover, this spring 20 must be able to be adjusted according to the nature of the work to be performed.
For this purpose, a support washer 34 is provided for this spring, a washer which can be moved along a screw 35 which is screwed more or less deeply into a thread of said washer under Inaction of the knurled knob. 36 that can be rotated from the outside of the apron 57 of the lathe.
The device mentioned below, intended to ensure the disengagement of the movement of the transverse carriage after the tool to be faced has done its work, is similar to that which has been described with regard to the longitudinal movement.
As seen in fig 5, the transverse carriage 2 carrying the tool to be surfaced P advances along the arrow 37 until contact between the depth gauge P and the sliding piston 38. The latter is slidably mounted in a stopper -fixed 39 and exceeds it by an adjustable length 40 in the direction facing the gauge.P. When the piston 38 has retreated by a value equal to this length 40 and has completely returned to its support 39, the clutch is released by means of the amplifying lever 41 pivoting at 42 on the longitudinal carriage and of which the small arm is subjected. to the action of the sliding piston 38 from the time indicated; candis that the large arm of the lever acts on the connecting rod 43 and thereby on the connecting rod 45 carried by the same fixed common barrel 44 as the connecting rod 43.
Bette connecting rod 45 acts in turn at 46 on the bifurcated rod 55 and also causes the automatic disengagement of the transverse movement. This disengagement takes place exactly as in the case of the longitudinal disengagement, the rod 55 tilting in the direction opposite to that described above to release the teeth 12 of the core from the teeth 13 of the pinion 51.
Here again, the play between the claw nut and the dice 53 serves to release the claws 12 and 13 when the rollers 19 have already been brought back towards the corresponding notches of the cam so that the spring 20 acts with energy. maxima to complete the return of the nut to its disengaged position The adjustment of the protrusion length 40 of the sliding piston 39 is done in the same way as for the sliding piston 5 ensuring the longitudinal disengagement by screwing the part 47 inserted. between the large arm of the lever 41 and the rod 43 against the action of the spring so as to move the small arm of the lever 41 away from the sliding piston 38. This control of the part 47 is very easily done by acting on a hexagon cavity 58 provided outside this part.
CLAIMS
1.Automatic disengaging device for machine tools and more particularly for turning and surfacing lathes, characterized by pistons sliding in stops provided on the carriages to come into contact with the corresponding limit switch gauges, this coming to the con- tact forcing said pistons to retract slightly and, following this retraction movement, to control a transmission ensuring automatic and very precise disengagement of the movement previously engaged and corresponding to the gauge considered.
