- DESCRIPTION -
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
vissé de verrouillage 12.Ce chapeau 12 est vissé sur la périphérie extérieure 11 et s'appuie contre la surface supérieure de la tête 7,en fermant ainsi l'extrémité supérieure d'une chambre d'admission 13 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a combined device for compressing and exhausting air and more particularly to a means for venting the dead space of the cylinder into the atmosphere for the purpose of increasing the efficiency of this combined device.
In combined air compression and exhaust systems of the ordinary type, a piston operates, during an intake stroke, to suck the pressurized fluid from a vacuum line, through an intake valve, into the vacuum line. a compression chamber, and acts, during a compression stroke, to compress the pressurized fluid, which has been admitted from the atmosphere into this compression chamber at the end of the intake stroke, and for the discharge through an outlet valve into a supply line. Beyond the upper dead center of the piston stroke, there is an - extension of the compression chamber, extension - commonly called dead space,
so that the piston cannot reach and damage the cylinder head at the end of its compression stroke. When the piston performs its compression stroke and reaches its top dead center, the dead space is therefore loaded with pressurized fluid. When the piston exerts its intake stroke, by increasing the vplume by 1 dead space, the pressure in this space and in the compression chamber must be reduced below the value of the pressure in the vacuum line before that the pressurized fluid does not flow into the compression chamber.
The higher the pressure in the dead space, the greater the distance the piston must travel during its intake stroke to reduce said pressure below that in the vacuum line. the piston intake stroke is not fully utilized to draw the pressurized fluid from the vacuum line, resulting in a loss of efficiency of the combined air compression and exhaust device,
The main aim of the invention is therefore to provide a device for increasing the efficiency of devices of the type defined above.
The invention also proposes to find a means of polishing to release into the atmosphere the pressure of the fluid in the dead space before the start of the intake stroke of the piston.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the detailed description which will now be given with reference to the accompanying drawing. This drawing, largely cut away, shows a combined device for compressing and exhausting air. according to the invention.
- DESCRIPTION -
The invention has been shown by way of example, in the form of a combined device, for compressing and exhausting air of the single stage type. This device comprises a casing 1, on the lower surface of which is suitably fixed the usual casing 2, in which the ordinary crankshaft 3 is rotatably mounted. This crankshaft is connected by a connecting rod 4 to a piston 5 slidably mounted in a cylinder. 6, so that the crankshaft can communicate; the piston reciprocating.
The cylinder 6 is closed at its upper end by a cylinder head 7, which defines with the walls of the cylinder and the upper face of the piston 5 the usual compression chamber 8.
An opening 9 extends vertically through the left part of the cylinder head 7; this opening, which forms part of the fluid inlet communication in the device, is closed at its upper end by a valve seat 10 held in place by a retaining nut 11; this nut is itself fixed in position by a cap
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
screwed locking 12. This cap 12 is screwed onto the outer periphery 11 and rests against the upper surface of the head 7, thus closing the upper end of an intake chamber 13;
this chamber 13 communicates through an orifice 14, provided in the retaining nut, 11, with an inlet pipe 15, and through orifices 16, provided in the valve seat 10, with the opening 9 and therefore the compression chamber 8. Communication through the orifices 16 is controlled by an annular inlet valve 17, which is pushed upwards, that is to say towards its seat 10, by a spring 18 interposed between this seat 10 and a spring seat 19 fixed to the seat 10 by a threaded rod and a nut 20.
Likewise, an opening 21 is provided to the right of the cylinder head 7 to establish an exhaust communication, This opening 21 is closed by a valve seat 22 held in place by a retaining nut 23 and a locking cap 24 analogous respectively to the nut 11 and to the cap 12. An exhaust chamber 25 communicates with an exhaust pipe 26 through an orifice 27 provided in the retaining nut 23; it can also communicate with the compression chamber 8 through orifices 28 provided in the seat 22. An annular exhaust valve 29 is pushed downwards, that is to say towards its seat 22, by a spring 30 interposed between this valve and a spring seat 31, which is mounted on the seat 22 by a threaded rod and a nut 32.
According to the invention, a bore 33 is formed in the cylinder head 7, at the top of the chamber 8; this bore is coaxial with cylinder 6. In this bore, a valve seat member 34 is fixed by a thread 35 and locked by a cap 36, which screws onto the outer periphery of the member 34 and rests against the upper surface of the cylinder head 7.An annulane valve seat 37 facing upwards forms part of the member 34; it is intended for a relief valve 38 pushed towards its closed position by a spring 39 disposed in a chamber 40.
This chamber is defined by the member 34 and the cap 36; it is constantly open to the air by a tubular sleeve 41, an orifice 42, a chamber 43 and a tubing connection 44 of the cap 36.The tubular sleeve 41 is pressed into the cap 36, from which it extends downwards into the chamber 40 to constitute there a guide of the spring 39.
As will be explained later, the relief valve 38 is not intended to open under the effect of the pressure prevailing in the chamber 8, but under the direct mechanical action exerted by a stud or plunger 45 fixed. in the center of the upper face of the piston 5; this pin 45 is therefore coaxial with cylinder 6 and member 34; the relief valve 38 opens under the action of the stud 45 when the piston 5 reaches its top dead center and after the exhaust valve 29 has closed. The force of the spring 39 can therefore be seen. must be appreciably greater than that of the spring 30, so that: ¯ the exhaust valve 29 can complete its full cycle of operation before the discharge valve 38 opens.
The wall of cylinder 6 further comprises several intake openings 46 protected by filters 47 in crimped horsehair; these orifices are completely uncovered by the piston 5 when the latter reaches its bottom dead center.
OPERATION.
When the crankshaft 3 rotates under the action of any suitable source of energy, the piston 5 performs a reciprocating movement under the action of the ball 4 by performing an intake stroke and a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
stroke (the exhaust for each of the crankshaft.
In the drawing, the piston 5 is shown at its bottom dead center, for which all the .suives are closed, as seen in the figure, and the chamber 8 is open to the air through the intake ports 46 .
As crankshaft 3 rotates from this position connecting rod 4 and piston 5 move upward and the piston first cuts off communication between atmosphere and chamber 8 by covering inlet ports 46.
By continuing to move upwards, the piston 5 compresses the fluid in the chamber 8 until the moment when the force directed upwards and applied to the exhaust valve 29 releases the latter from its seat despite the pressure. opposing combined force, directed downward and exerted by the spring 30 and by the pressure which may prevail in the exhaust pipe
26, With this valve 29 open, fluid 6 flows from chamber 8 through ports 28 to chamber 25, and from there through ports 27 into exhaust line 26 and into a suitable fluid receiver not shown. The pressurized fluid continues to flow in this manner until the piston 5 almost reaches the end of its upstroke,
that is to say until the moment when the pressure in the exhaust pipe 26 and the pressure in the chamber
8 have substantially equalized; the force of the spring 30 then closing the valve 29.
When the exhaust valve 29 has closed, the piston 5 continuing its upward movement brings the plunger 45 into contact with the exhaust valve 38 and opens the cell; the pressure then prevailing in the dead space between the piston 5 and the cylinder head 7 causes the fluid to pass into the chamber 40, the sleeve 41, the orifice 42, the chamber 43, the fitting 44 and the atmosphere; the pressure in chamber 8 therefore decreases from the pressure of the fluid receiver to atmospheric pressure.
The initial downward movement of piston 5 removes contact between plunger 45 and exhaust valve 38 and therefore allows spring 39 to close that valve again. At this time, the valves 17 and 29 are both closed as seen in the figure. Continuing to move downwards, after closing the exhaust valve 38, the piston 5, drops the pressure in chamber 8 to a value sufficiently below atmospheric pressure to allow the pressure in chamber 13 and in vacuum line 15 to move valve 17 from its seat, 10 despite the opposing force of the spring 18.
Fluid then flows from a suitable vacuum source (not shown) through inlet line 15 to chamber 13 through port 14, and thence through ports 16 of the valve seat. 10 into chamber 8 '. As the piston nears the end of its intake stroke, the pressures in vacuum line 15 and chamber 8, respectively, are substantially equal and intake valve 17 is closed. closes again under the action of spring 18.
However, by completing its intake stroke, the piston 5 again uncovers the intake ports 1 1 46, thus allowing the fluid at atmospheric pressure to enter the chamber 8, which is then ready for the stroke. next compression.
The piston 5 is at this moment at its bottom dead center, as seen in the figure with the valves in the positions shown. Operation is repeated as just explained.
It can be seen from the foregoing that the invention provides a compression and exhaust device that is more efficient than the devices.

known, because a mechanically actuated exhaust valve decreases the pressure in the cylinder, at the end of a compression stroke, to atmospheric pressure before the execution of a suction stroke, and allows thus the inlet valve to open rather8t during the suction stroke in order to increase the effective length thereof.
