tion News, vol.x, No.l, janvier 1949, pages 20-29.

<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>

A l'axe princi-

<EMI ID=37.1>
A l'intérieur
<EMI ID=39.1>
<EMI ID=40.1>

, tan-

It is known to provide the rotary axes with determined positions, using ratchet mechanisms each comprising a selection wheel and a number of pawls, with corresponding rings) equal to the number of positions of the axis. In such a mechanism, it happens that the position of a determined axis must depend on the position of another axis, as is the case for example when one of the axes carries a variable capacitor while the other controls a switch, which, when switching from one wavelength range to another, switches on or off a capacitor, resistor or part of a choke induction. So far to get
this result, each axis included, in addition to the parts necessary to obtain

The Applicant has observed that these drawbacks can be eliminated when a mechanism for adjusting two fixed rotary axes, the main axis of which can occupy a certain number of positions, arbitrary.

comprising a selector wheel, several pawls and ratchets as well as an overload coupling, while the other axle can also occupy a number of positions, a factor of the number of positions of the main axle, chosen at the using a ratchet mechanism comprising a selection wheel, several pawls and ratchet wheels as well as an overload coupling, is constructed so as to have only one main axle drive mechanism, the movement of the selector wheel

of the movement of the main axis, is obtained using the drive mechanism

positions chosen, the instantaneous position of the selection wheel of the other axis is determined by the instantaneous position of the main axis. Said selection wheel determines only which pawl will act; the me- position

In one embodiment of the invention, the mechanism may include the main axis and several secondary axes, all of this :. that the movement of each selection wheel of these secondary axes is derived from the movement of the main axis, while the adjustment of each selection wheel is independent of the adjustment of the other selection wheels.

<EMI ID = 9.1>
that two pawls act simultaneously. However, in this embodiment of the invention, it is necessary that the active zones of the members fixed on the two axes are equal, - it is thus that when the principal axis

a switch whose active area is 360 [deg.], it is impossible to provide a transmission such that the selection wheel and the main axis sweep, per unit of time, the same angle. The active area of the main axis must be equal to that of the other axis. On the other hand, the ratchet mechanism of the main axis and that of the secondary axis do not necessarily have to be the same.
In another embodiment of the invention, the two axes comprise the same ratchet mechanism, with the same number of pawls and
of rings, and there is provided, between the main axis and the selection wheel of the ratchet mechanism of the secondary axis a transmission such as the ratio
<EMI ID = 11.1>
laie, per unit of time, the selection wheel of the secondary axis is equal to the quotient of the number of pawls and the number of positions that the other axis must be able to occupy, multiplied by the whole quotient obtained by dividing the area of total action, expressed in degrees and distributed over a circle, of the main axis by 360 [deg.]. In this embodiment of the mechanism, the ratchet mechanisms of the secondary axes can therefore be identical to the ratchet mechanism of the main axis, which allows the use of standardized members, produced in series.
In addition, in this embodiment of the invention, the area of action of the main axis and that of the secondary axis need not necessarily be equal; it suffices that the zone of action of the main axis constitutes an entire fraction of that of the other axis.
However, according to another embodiment of the invention, the same ratchet mechanism can be used both on the secondary axis and on the main axis, by providing between the main axis and the selection wheel of the ratchet mechanism a transmission comprising a Halt cross arranged so that, each time the main axis has turned from its action zone expressed in degrees, divided by the number of pawls in its ratchet mechanism, which action zone constitutes a factor of 360 [deg.], the selection wheel rotates by an angle equal to 360 [deg.] divided by the desired number of positions. Here too, the action area of the main axis can therefore be smaller than the action area of the other axis.
Preferably, according to yet another embodiment
of the invention, a transmission is provided between the main axis and the means for moving the selection wheel of the other axis, means which are arranged so that the movement of the selection wheel of the other axis does not occurs only when the primary axis occupies a position that requires another position of the secondary axis. This embodiment offers the advantage that the selection wheel of the other axis is only set in motion when necessary, so that the mechanism does not perform unnecessary movements. Here too, the action area of the main axis may differ from that of the secondary axis.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the movement of the secondary axis selection wheel is effected under the influence of a tension spring tensioned by the movement of the main axis, while the movement of the selection wheel is prevented by a pawl which is combined with a fixed ratchet wheel, the whole so that the clutch between the pawl and the ratchet wheel is removed as soon as the main axis has reached a position for which we want a new position
<EMI ID = 12.1>
If desired, the engagement between the pawl and the ratchet wheel is restored. The movement of the selection wheel is therefore very rapid, by the use of an instantaneous control.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the features which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course, forming part of the invention.

It is the angle or a determined part of this angle that the main axis must sweep to move the selection wheel. of the secondary axis by an angle such that said secondary axis can occupy another position While scanning said angle by the primary axis, the secondary axis does not rotate, so this is a wasted area. selection wheel 2 also twelve positions evenly distributed over 360 [deg.]. The ratchet mechanism which determines the positions of axis 7, however, only has four pawls, uniformly distributed over 360 [deg.] And, as shown in fig. 2a, the selector wheel 8 has a hollow 25 which extends

can only choose one ratchet each time. In this figure 2a, the pawls 24 which determine the position of the axis 7, are represented by blackened dots, while the circles indicate pawls 26 which do not exist but which would exist if @ the axis 7 should also be able to. occupy twelve positions. In Figure 2b, the selection wheel 8 has a hollow which extends only through an angle slightly less than 60 [deg.]. This selection wheel, which is combined with six pawls, therefore makes it possible to communicate to the axis six positions distributed over 360 [deg.]. It goes without saying that the number of positions that axis 7 can occupy always constitutes a factor of the number of positions of axis 3. For twelve positions of axis 3 (the most common number in practice), axis 7 can therefore only occupy two, three, four, six or twelve po siti on s.
The form of construction described is very simple; however, it has a drawback: the loss angle is very large and, moreover,

the following pawls which, however, stop the axis 7 in the same positions as the first four pawls. This is obviously made possible by
the adjustment of the ratchet rings. 'The last four pawls are used in the same way. The form of construction described offers the advantage not only of being very simple, but of subjecting the springs of the ac-

the form of construction shown in FIG. 2. However, the angle
loss is greater than in the form of: construction shown in fig. 2. The action area of axis 3 can be smaller than the action area of axis 7.

twelve positions, and that the axis 7 must have four positions, the cross must have a number of teeth such that this number, in combination with the transmission between the gears 33 and 34, always ensures that the selection wheel 8 turns by 30 [deg.]. In addition, the transmission ratio between
gears 33 and 34 must again satisfy the condition that twelve, divided by the number of stop positions, is equal to this transmission ratio so that in the case considered the transmission must be multiplying and the transmission ratio should be 3: 1. In this form of construction, the angle of losses is smaller than in the forms of construction shown in figs. 2 and 3, but, on the other hand,

new train the whole; moreover the Maltese cross is quite expensive. However, when great importance is attached to a rather small angle of the losses, the form of construction shown in FIG. 4 is preferable to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The form of construction shown in FIG. 6 will be explained with the aid of the diagram given in FIG. 5.

12 positions, that all the pawls of the secondary axis 7 are used and that this secondary axis must again be able to occupy four positions.
As a result, the selection wheel 8 must again be turned by 30 [deg.] To move from one position to the next. In fig. 5, figure in which to facilitate understanding, all the rotations are represented by translations, the selection wheel 8 comprising a hollow 40 must be moved to the left. Two of the twelve pawls are indicated by 41 and 42, with pawl 42 occupying the operating position. The main axis 3 moves to the right. We have also planned
a fixed body 43 comprising teeth 44 and a fixed point of rotation 45. A rod 46 can rotate around this point of rotation. The part of the rod which is connected to the selector wheel 8 has a length, counted from the selector wheel to the point of exactly equal rotation
to one third of the length of the portion of the rod measured from the point of rotation 45 to the other end where a pawl 47 is hinged to the rod 46. Each tooth 44 of the fixed body 43 extends on an angle of 90 [deg.] when said body affects a circular shape. At the main axis

with a stop 52 provided on the rod 46.
The whole works in the following way. When the rod 3 (which is therefore in reality the main axis) moves to the right

given that the latter is held by tooth 44. As soon as the stop
48 touches the pawl 47, the latter is lifted and the rod 46 can rotate around point 45. As a result, the selection wheel 8 is driven, but at an angle of only 30 [deg.], Since the rod 46 causes a

ment of the selection wheel 8 has caused the lifting of the pawl 42 and the actuation of the pawl 41. It goes without saying that, in the case of another subdivision of the number of teeth on the fixed body 44, a different ratio of the lengths of the parts of the rod 46 to cause each time

the form of construction shown in FIG. 5 is that the individual spring 50 ensures the rotation of the selector wheel 8, so that the springs of the overload coupling of the main axle only have to do a much smaller job than they have to do.
in the forms of construction shown in figs. 3 and 4. Like
the distance that axis 3 must travel from the moment when the stop 48
touches the pawl 47 to lift the pawl 47 is small enough, the angle
loss is virtually reduced to zero.
Fig. 6 indicates how the shape shown schematically in FIG. 5. The movement of the main axis 3 is
again transmitted to the gear 21 via the output 14
of the overload coupling wedged on the main axis 3. Has one pin 52
which is carried by the gear 21, is connected to one end of the spring 50.
The lower part of the pin 52 constitutes the stop 48. Inside

of a carrier body 54. To the latter is fixed the other end of the spring
50, while the supporting body, which can rotate, carries the pawl 47 at the same time.
The toothed wheel 53 is combined with a toothed wheel 55. During its rotation, the latter drives a toothed wheel 56 which causes
<EMI ID = 40.1>
the same function as the rod 46.
The operation is explained with the aid of fig, 5; the movement

upper part of pin 52 drives the spring, extends it to the
when the lower end 48 of the spindle hits the pawl
47, and releases the latter from the teeth 44. The spring 50 expands and drives
the body 54 and the gear 53, so that ultimately the selector wheel 8 is driven. In the case considered, the transmission 53, 55, 56, 8 causes a reduction of 3: 1, the axis 3 having twelve positions over 360 [deg.], While

days to achieve the desired operation while maintaining as small a loss angle as possible and a low actuation spring load.
