<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Thermostats are already known intended to maintain a determined temperature in a hot or cold enclosure.
Such thermostats generally include a rigid sheath, which often makes it difficult to adapt or install the appliance, in particular in household appliances such as stoves or refrigerated cabinets of very compact construction.
To remedy these difficulties, flexible sheath thermostats filled with a suitable expandable liquid have already been proposed, the flexibility of this sheath allowing it to undergo the deformations necessary for its installation.
In this case however, the material constituting the flexible sheath inevitably undergoes the effects of aging, giving rise to an increasing porosity and consequently to a progressive evaporation of the expandable liquid.
This results in a slow reduction in the volume of this liquid, so that after a certain time, the device no longer operates according to the initial graduation ranges provided, and the degree of temperature that it is desired to maintain in the he pregnant not only is no longer respected, but tends to take more and more values.
In addition, an accidental perforation of the flexible sheath produced by a shock or another cause can cause the complete draining of the regulating liquid, with the device being put out of service.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the drawbacks inherent in flexible sheath thermostats, cited above, and it relates to a thermostat in which the thermosensitive member acts on the member for regulating the gas flow, by 'intermediary of a flexible connection consisting of a wire of metal, or other suitable material, joined to the regulating member and guided in a tubular sheath, the movements of said wire being controlled by the relative length variations between a metal sheath expandable and a metal rod with little or no expandable to the free end of which is fixed said wire.
By way of example, one embodiment of the subject of the invention is described below with reference to the appended drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an overall view of the thermostatic device according to the invention.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 show means for guiding the wire in its flexible sheath.
As shown in Figure 1.1, the apparatus according to the invention is constituted by a housing 1 having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 for the ga4, this housing being closed by a cover 4. In this cover is screwed a rod 5 engaged. controlled by a button 6, which is itself engaged by a journal 7 presented by a bell 8 provided with openings 9 for the gas passage. On the edge of the bell 8 is adapted a seat 10 for a valve 11. The seat 10 integral with the bell 8 is subjected to the antagonistic action of a spring 12, while the valve 11 is subjected to that of a spring 13, springs 12 and 13 resting on the bottom of housing 1.
The valve 11 is controlled by a flexible wire 14, of steel or other suitable material, which is guided in a sheath 15 also of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
steel or other suitable material capable of allowing it to bend.
The sheath is fixed to the casing 1 and ends with a rigid sheath 16 of expandable metal to the bottom 17 of which is fixed, possibly with adjustment, a rod 18 of little or non-expandable metal to which the wire 14 is joined.
It should be noted that the wire 14 is subjected, in a permanent manner to the tensile force which is imparted to it by the spring 13 which is of sufficient power to maintain said wire constantly under tension during cooling of the expandable sheath 16, while on heating of the latter, the expansion forces of the latter are sufficiently large to overcome the force of said spring.
The apparatus described and illustrated operates as follows:
Under the effect of the temperature undergone by the expandable sheath 16 in the heated enclosure in which it rests, said sheath expands The resulting elongation has the effect of exerting traction by the rod 18 on the wire 14 which is fixed there, which acting in the manner of a bowden cable, attracts the valve 11 towards its seat 10, against the antagonism of the spring 13.
The ensuing lowering of temperature produces a retraction of the sheath-16, with corresponding loosening of the wire 14 and corresponding separation of the valve 11. The process is repeated until the temperature equilibrium is established. .
When the flexible connection formed by the sheath 15 and the wire 14, is called upon to undergo relatively pronounced curvatures, it will be necessary to ensure the axial guidance of the wire 14 in its sheath 15. To this end, the sheath 15 may for example, be shaped as shown in Figure 2, according to which it has a succession of hollow rings 15a joined together by guide portions 15b of smaller diameter, or else said sheath 15 may be profiled as shown in Figure 3 so to present narrowings 15c forming guides for the wire 14.
This guiding of the wire 14 in its sheath 15 could moreover also be achieved by arranging, as shown in FIG. 4, between said wire 14 and said sheath 15, balls 21 kept at a distance from each other, by spacers 22, such as arrangement further promoting relative movements between the wire and its sheath. This ball guide device can obviously be combined with the guide systems shown in Figures 2 and 3.
In all cases, the sliding of the wire 14 in its sheath 15 may be facilitated by filling the latter with a lubricant resistant to high temperatures, or by filling with graphite.
The initial opening of the valve 11, for a determined gas flow rate, is effected using the rod 5 controlled by the button 6, which moves the seat 10 elastically supported by the spring 12 away from or closer to this valve.
This system for adjusting the position of the seat 10 also makes it possible to compensate for the variations in positions taken by the wire 14 according to the curvatures given to the sheath after installation of the device.
It must also be understood that the adjustment of the position of the valve to a determined value can be operated by an action
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
exerted on the rod 18, at the end 17 of the sheath 16, by means of an adjusting screw 23 capable of modifying the relative position of the rod 18 and of the expandable sheath 16.
A sealing membrane 19 clamped between the housing and the cover 4, as well as a membrane 20 clamped between the bell 8 and the seat
10 sealing the housing.
It should be noted that the invention also provides that the sheath
15 and wire 14 may themselves act in the manner of the probe or thermosensitive element constituted by the expandable sheath 16 and the rod 18, the sheath 15 being in this case made of expandable metal and the wire 14 of thin metal. or non-expandable, or vice versa, the means for guiding and sliding the wire 14, described above, can also be applied in this case.
