L'invention a donc pour objet : - un appareil destiné à éliminer sensiblement la perte de temps se produisant dans l'alimentation d'un appareil de traitement comportant plusieurs rouleaux, ce résultat étant dü au fait que l'extrémité extérieure ou de tête d'un rouleau est placée dans une position telle qu'elle suit de très près l'extrémité Intérieure ou de queue d'un rouleau précédent pendant que ce dernier est amené dans l'appareil de traitement; - un procédé et un appareil permettant de dérouler un rouleau de matière en bandes en une opération continue s'effectuant en deux stades, ce qui permet-le déroulement et la manipulation de rouleaux de très grandes dimensions;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
lement.
Une quatrième station D, située à côté de la troisième station C, comprend un réceptacle 33 destiné à recevoir le rouleau, ce réceptacle com- portant, dans le mode de réalisation représenté, une paire de guides latéraux rotatifs 34 qu'on peut régler dans le sens transversal pour recevoir des rouleaux de largeurs différentes et plusieurs galets fous 35, 36 et 37 formant berceau et supportés dans un bâti 40- Les galets sont organisés de manière que les galets 35 empêchent le rouleau de dépasser le réceptacle 33; les galets 36 supportent le rouleau en vue de sa rotation;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
REVENDICATIONS.
1.- Procédé de manutention et de déroulement d'un rouleau de matière en bandes, servant à diriger cette matière dans un appareil de trai- tement dans lequel la bande progresse automatiquement, caractérisé en ce qu' il comprend les opérations suivantes, dans l'ordre indiqué; on fait passer un rouleau d'un poste d'emmagasinage à un poste qui reçoit le rouleau, qui le fait tourner et saisit l'extrémité de la bande, cette extrémité étant l'extrémité avant ou de tête du rouleau ; onamène le rouleau dans un poste assurant le contact avec la surface du rouleau, enroulant ce rouleau et le déroulant, ce qui permet de dégager son extrémité;

The present invention relates to a method and to an apparatus for handling and unwinding a coiled strip of metal and it is intended in particular to continuously pass several rolls of material to apparatus, such as a rolling mill or the like, treating or working metal strips.
In order to eliminate the delays which arise during the successive feeding, for example of a rolling mill, by means of metal rollers, delays which represent a loss of production, we have hitherto made an ef- very considerable in trying to achieve a suitable mechanism for feeding webs to several rolls and unwinding them for continuous processing, but these mechanisms have not given completely satisfactory results, since the time lost in the assembly of each roll to allow its unwinding and processing is another important factor. Not only does the present invention obviate the difficulties encountered heretofore.
but also it makes it possible to handle rolls having a much larger diameter since the unwinding of the strip takes place in two stages, the first stage being carried out in the part of the apparatus capable of receiving rolls. of very large diameter and during which takes place a partial unwinding in order to reduce the size of the roll, and the second stage taking place in another part of the apparatus to complete the unwinding operation.
The subject of the invention is therefore: - an apparatus intended to substantially eliminate the loss of time occurring in the supply of a treatment apparatus comprising several rollers, this result being due to the fact that the outer or head end of a roll is placed in such a position that it follows very closely the Inner or tail end of a preceding roll as the latter is fed into the processing apparatus; - A method and an apparatus for unwinding a roll of material in strips in a continuous operation carried out in two stages, which allows the unwinding and handling of very large rolls;
- a fully automatic method and apparatus and in which the continuous feeding of several rolls of a metal forming device takes place in a more positive manner and takes less time than with devices used up to Here for this purpose; - a device whose operation is efficient and safe and which relieves the operator of all the manual operations which are usually necessary to carry out in the positioning and feeding of the rollers
These objects as well as the various other new characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description given below without limitation, with reference to the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the middle of the apparatus and showing the relative arrangement of the successive workstations or stations as well as the combination of elements according to the invention in FIGS. 2 to 7 show the stages corresponding to the passage of the roll through the various stations provided in the apparatus to ensure the introduction of this roll into the treatment unit, namely: FIG. 2 shows a roll at the storage station; Fig. 3 shows a roller after it has advanced to the second station where it is rotated.
Fig. 4 shows a roller resting on rotating cylinders of the second station.
Fig. 5 shows a roller at the third station and placed under the action of the electromagnet.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 6 shows the outer end of the roll at the fifth station, in position to enter a rolling mill! Fig. 7 shows the situation after the partially unwound roll has been transferred from the third station to the fourth station and a new roll has entered the unwinder of the third station, the outer end part of the new roll having passed through the clamping device to open cylinders located at the fifth station from where it is to be brought by the clamping cylinder closure immediately after the tail end of the first roll has passed this station.
In Fig. 1 is shown an inclined inlet ramp 10 on which it is possible to store several rolls in which successive samples are taken in order to work the material which is in the form of strips; this constitutes the first station A or storage station. At the lower end of the ramp 10, a pivoting stop 11 joined to a piston and cylinder device 9 and actuated by the latter, is intended to prevent the rollers from moving beyond this stop before passing to a mechanism operating mechanism 12 serving to drive the roller in rotation, a mechanism which constitutes a second station B.
The rotary maneuvering mechanism 12 is arranged in the vicinity of the inlet ramp 10 and it receives a roller via this ramp, the roller being able to be driven in rotation on this mechanism by means of two rotary cylinders 13 and 14 of which at least one of them is driven by a conventional device, not shown. The cylinder 13 is supported in suitable bearings housed in the frame 8 and the cylinder 14 rests on a toothed sector 15 which pivots and bears on the shaft of the cylinder 13. The toothed sector is rotated by a pinion 16 driven by it. - even by means of a conventional training device (not shown).
The rotational movement of the sector 15 forces the cylinder 14 to rotate around the cylinder 13 and reach a higher level than the latter, which allows a roller to pass from the cylinders 13 and 14 to the second station B.
In order to stop a roller in its movement and to prevent it from going beyond the operating mechanism 12 until the apparatus is ready to receive it, a stopper 17 provided for the roller is arranged next to the second station, this stopper being made so as to intercept and stop the roller in order to put it in place on the cylinders 13 and 14. The stopper 17 is raised and lowered by means of a link arm 18 and a device to piston and cylinder 19. Between the cylinders 13 and 14 is placed an electromagnet 21 which can be adjusted in the vertical direction by means of a jack 22 by means of a rod 23.
The electromagnet is given a sufficient length to accommodate the widest band that the treatment device can receive and a suitable circuit can be used to supply current to this device, of circuit n 'being not shown as this is not simply necessary for an understanding of the invention.
Next to the second station B; the third station C has been provided which, in general, is constituted by a reversible unwinder 24 of the cone type, this unwinder comprising contact cones 25 made so as to receive the lateral ends or opposite edges of a roller in order to support the latter and to drive it in rotation, the unwinder comprising for this purpose a transverse adjustment device which makes it possible to mount on the cones rolls of different widths. It should be understood that the unwinder is symmetrical with respect to its center and that its driving device, although it is not shown, can be of any conventional type making it possible to drive a rotating roller in one direction or in the same direction. 'other.
To make it possible to place a roll so that its axis corresponds to the geometric axes of the cones of the unwinder, a lifting device or hydraulic jack 26, placed below the unwinder, is made so as to receive a roll coming from station B and at the same time. '' raise to the correct position by means of a piston and cylinder device 30 arranged vertically.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of course. In order to keep the turns of the roller tightly tight against one another and to help the forward movement of the outer end of the latter in the feed direction, an arm 27, forming a lever, is mounted on the frame 28 of the unwinder and is driven in rotation by means of a shaft
29 connected to a drive device, not shown.
On the outer end of the arm 27 can turn an element 31 which, when the arm 27 pivots downwards, comes into contact with the periphery of the roll when the latter is in the unwinder 28 of the third station C. By measurement As a precaution, the arm 27 and the stop 11 are electrically connected so that the stop 11 does not allow the passage of a roller in the second station or station B as long as the arm 27 has not been brought back from the lower position in which it is in contact with a roller.
Between the stations A and B, a pivoting guide 32 is provided, one end of which rests on the curved surface of the stopper 17 stopping the roller and, when this stopper drops, the guide 32 is lowered with it until it occupies a substantially horizontal position in which it. can support a roller advancing from station to station.
A fourth station D, located next to the third station C, comprises a receptacle 33 intended to receive the roll, this receptacle comprising, in the embodiment shown, a pair of rotating lateral guides 34 which can be adjusted in. the transverse direction to receive rolls of different widths and several idle rollers 35, 36 and 37 forming a cradle and supported in a frame 40- The rollers are organized so that the rollers 35 prevent the roll from exceeding the receptacle 33; the rollers 36 support the roller with a view to its rotation;
finally, the rollers 37, placed on the upper part of the receptacle 33, not only help to maintain the rotational movement of the roller when the latter, because its size and weight are reduced, can be pulled upwards. under the tensile force exerted by the rolling mill and be momentarily lifted away from the rollers 36 and be brought into contact with the rollers 37, but the first of the two rollers 37 also serves as a deflector roller for the strip which passes above of the last.
Above the receptacle 33 receiving the roll there is provided a clamping roll device 38, which constitutes the fifth station or station E, and which serves to introduce the end of a roll into the rolling mill This clamping device comprises a pair of cylinders 39 and 41 of which at least one is driven. According to one characteristic of this device, the cylinder 39 can be raised and lowered so as to move away from the strip and to come into contact with the latter when it passes over the lower cylinder 41.
Between stations C and E is disposed an erasable guide 42 helping to insert the end of the strip into the pinging cylinder device 38. This guide can be adjusted in the vertical direction by means of a piston and cylinder device 43 so as to adapt to the different diameters of the rollers during handling. The guide has two adjustable parts spaced laterally from each other and made so that their two sides come into contact with the web so that when a roll is to be transferred from station C to station D, the aforementioned parts of the guide move outwards, in order to free the band to allow the roller to come to its new position at station D.
To the extent useful, additional guides serve to guide the strip between the clamping roll device 38 and the apparatus used to process this strip, for example an M.
It is clear that, because each of the stations is arranged at a slightly lower level than the previous station, the weight of the roller helps it move from one station to the next. To advance the roll from station C to station D, the tensile force exerted by the rolling mill also helps to effect the transfer.
The device which is the subject of the invention operates in the manner described
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
briefly below. On the entry ramp 10 of the rollers of station A (Figs. 1 and 2), a roll is brought, the turns of which are wound in an anti-clockwise direction, and it is made to roll so that it descends to 'to the stop 11 serving as a stop for the roller. Lowering the stop 11 allows the roller to pass to the second station B and to come up against the stop 17 serving as a stop for the roller, this stop having been previously raised to intercept the roller, as shown in FIG. 3. As soon as a roll has left the ramp 10, the stopper 11 immediately rises and the next roll can roll down until it is stopped by coming into contact with this stopper.
When the roller is stopped, the stopper 17 is lowered and the roller can rest on the rotating cylinders 13 and 14, as shown in FIG. 4- It will be noted that the guide 32 has lowered itself, at the same time as the stop 17, to come to occupy a substantially horizontal position. Once the roller rests on the cylinders 13 and 14, this roller is rotated, so that the front or head end is placed between the cylinders and directly above the electromagnet 21. A this moment, the electromagnet is energized and lifted, .. so that it comes into contact with the end part of the roller.
By means of the pinion 16 and the toothed sector 15, the cylinder 14 of the operating mechanism 12 pivots around the cylinder 13, so as to pass the roller to the lifting device 26 of the third station C, which releases the head end of the roller . This clearance is sufficient to bend the web past its yield strength, which creates permanent deformation in the part of the web that has been separated from the rest of the roll.
Before the lifter 26 rises to place the roll in the same axial alignment as the cones 25 of the unwinder, the excitation ceases in the electromagnet 21, thereby freeing the end of the web from the coil. electromagnet and thereby allowing the strip to expand elastically upward to a degree which is a function of its elasticity.
When the roll rises and engages between the cones of the unwinder, the latter are driven in clockwise rotation in order to tighten the free end of the strip to bring it back against the rest of the roll, while at the same time the surface of the roller comes into contact with the rotating member 31 in order to exert pressure on the turns of the roller to bring them into close contact with each other and to hold against the main body of the roller the end part which had been folded outwards.
The movement of rotation of the unwinder in the direction of clockwise ceases as soon as the head end of the roller is at the upper part of the latter and occupies, relative to the guide 42, then in the closed position, a position such that the head end of the roller can easily be directed to enter the guide 42 by rotating the roller counterclockwise. The rotation of the unwinder 24 in the counterclockwise direction has the effect of directing the leading end of the strip through the guide 42 and between the cylinders 39 and 41 of the clamping device 38 which are then separated. 'from each other.
The upper cylinder is then lowered so that it grips the strip, as shown in FIG. 6, and the clamping rolls are rotated so as to advance the strip so that it enters a rolling mill or other apparatus ensuring its progression. As soon as the strip is gripped and pulled by the working rolls of the rolling mill, the clamp rolls of device 38 move away from each other. The arm 27 is also retracted to come to occupy its position shown in FIG. 1, and the stopper 11 is lowered so as to allow another roller to advance to the second station B.
After a substantial portion of the web has been unwound from the roll at the third station C, the guides 42 are moved away from the web and the cones 25 disengage from the roll under the effect of a transverse erasing movement. The roll can then roll up to the receptacle 33 intended to receive the roll and located at the fourth station D, the roll being aïdé

in its displacement by the tensile force exerted by the rolling mill. The rotating side guides 34 are then adjusted transversely along the width of the roll so that they enclose the edges of the roll during the completion of the unwinding operation.
As shown on
Fig. 7, there remains on the roll intended for treatment, when it reaches the fourth station D, a quantity of strip sufficient to leave sufficient time on the one hand, for the arrival of a new roll at the third station
C, in which the initial disengagement of the head end of the strip has taken place, as in the previous operation, and on the other hand, for the entry of the head end of the second roller into the fifth station E, between the clamping cylinders of the device 38 (which are then separated from one another) and its passage above the strip of the front roller which is directed on the cylinder 41, then serving as a deflector cylinder, during the passage of the strip through the treatment apparatus.
It can easily be seen that the object of the present invention is a method and an apparatus making it possible to handle and advance completely automatically a succession of rollers, so that there is no loss of time between the introduction. one roll into the processing apparatus and the introduction of the next roll. Although a rolling mill has been shown as the processing apparatus used with the present invention, it is evident that the apparatus for handling and advancing rolls, as just described, can be used. with any other type of apparatus for treating strip material when it is highly desirable to ensure continuous operation.
CLAIMS.
1.- Method of handling and unwinding a roll of material in strips, serving to direct this material into a treatment apparatus in which the strip advances automatically, characterized in that it comprises the following operations, in the 'indicated order; a roll is passed from a storage station to a station which receives the roll, rotates it and grips the end of the web, this end being the front or head end of the roll; the roll is brought into a station ensuring contact with the surface of the roll, winding this roll and unwinding it, which enables its end to be released;
the end of the roll is released and the latter is rotated in a direction corresponding to a new winding of the end of the strip on the roll, while ensuring contact with the surface of this roll to oppose the loosening of the turns of this roller, the roller is rotated in the opposite direction to bring the end of the strip to a position where contact with the strip and its advancement is ensured; finally, a significant part of the roll is unwound in order to reduce its size and the reduced roll is then passed to a station ensuring the unwinding of the roll, in order to unwind the rest of the material from the latter.
