<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

tion as presently understood requires two winding opera- tions, a first and a second winding, one when the film unwinds from the outside of the yarn roll, passes through the apparatus of projection and wound up on the take-up reel, and the other when the roll produced on the take-up reel is unwound, the film being wound up on a distribution reel so as to return the roll to its original position in which the images - individual are in the order desired for the projection.
This second or reverse winding deteriorates the film much more than its use in the projection apparatus itself, since the films are unwound and rewound at a relatively high speed. free rotation of the roller being prevented by means of brakes which exert a force on the film to keep it stretched. Considerable slippage and friction occurs on the adjacent layers of the film and consequently lapping and wear of the film surface.
One of the aims of the present invention is to provide a device in which it is not necessary to turn the film over between two projection operations ,,
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus in which the roll of film is unwound from the inside of the roll as it is passed through. through the projection device,

In these buta and in: others, the invention relates to the apparatus which will be described and whose. different characteristics are shown by way of example in. the drawings, appendices.

Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of a roll. of film used. together with the device for unwinding the film.
Fig. 5 is a plan. a film unwinding plate and '
Fig. 6 is a section through the unwinding plate and its mechanism taken on line 6-6 of FIG. 5.
In. according to the present invention the film is unwound and fed into the projection apparatus from the inside of the roll, the latter rotating at a speed such that the inner layer of film has substantially the same speed as that of the film. at. which the film enters the projection apparatus. The film is therefore unwound from the roll in. the same radial position without being twisted at, bent. The film is then introduced in the usual position in the apparatus.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
projection reil that it passes through to then wind on a reel mounted in the usual way.
In order to unwind the film or introduce it into the projection apparatus, it is preferably arranged so that the film is supported in a horizontal position on a rotating support plate on which the film is centered and held by means of. clamping members acting on the outer circumference of the film. To give the plate the necessary rotational speed, this plate is connected directly to the gear winding mechanism and driven by this mechanism so as to always maintain a determined ratio between the speeds of the winding coil and the. unwinding plate.
The radius along which the film is unwound from the. unwinding plate is, however, always a little larger, than the one under which it is wound. on the reel, a part of the film. being removed from the unwinding roll and lying in path between this roll and the winding spool before being wound up thereon. The unwinding plate and the take-up reel are therefore connected so as to compensate for this difference between the radius of the unwinding film roll and that of the winding film roll.
In. With the accompanying drawings the invention is shown applied to a simplex machine of the ordinary type, but it is understood that it can be applied to any suitable projection apparatus. In the accompanying drawings the roller 10 which is to introduce the film into the projection apparatus is placed on a stash or rotating horizontal table 12 enclosed in. a feed magazine 14 placed above a projection apparatus 16.
The table plate 12 rotates on a central driven support rod 18 and a belt, of. movie 20

is extracted from the inner part of the roller, preferably tangentially. ¯The film passes between the pebbles
22- and 24 mounted on an oscillating member 26 arranged so as to be able to turn slightly on a support 28 to be placed in the prolongation of the tangent to the. inner circumference of. film roll as this inner circumference increases.
The film passes over a roller 30 mounted at the rear end of the oscillating member 26 and rotates around this roller to then descend while passing through. through an opening: his. then it passes over rollers 34 and 36 which it brings to the desired position to enter the projection apparatus 16. At its entry into the latter the film passes over them. ordinary spindle wheels, then past the projection lenses and arrive at the bottom of the projection apparatus * this part of the apparatus being shown dealt with more. weak, in: The. drawings, being of any suitable type and construction.
Coming out of the lower part of. projection apparatus, the film passes through a receiving magazine
38 mounted below the projection chamber 16 and it winds onto a spool 40. The spool 40 can. be of the usual type and it is driven by means of a belt and a pulley 42 and an axis au. support shaft 44, at the desired speeds, to give the film a uniform movement outside the projection chamber :.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention the unwind plate 1a is driven by the spool 40 via a gear train, maintaining a determined speed ratio, between the spool and the plate 12 for all speeds. of the coil. For this purpose, a toothed wheel 46 is rigidly mounted on the shaft 44 inside a housing 48 which prevents it from coming into contact with the. reel and film ...,.
