<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to a process and to an apparatus for manufacturing small radius elbows from tubes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a method and apparatus for converting tubes into elbows of small radius and characterized by a minimum variation in the thickness of the wall of the elbow compared to the thickness of the wall. of the tube.
More particularly, an object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for making elbows from tubes, which comprises making a die through which a passage passes corresponding to the shape of the elbow to be obtained, together with a mandrel with a head. appropriate form, a device for placing the head of the mandrel at the bend of the passage in the die, a device for pushing the tube partly into the bend of the die and partly beyond the head of the mandrel and finally a device for removing then the die mandrel head thereby shaping the leg of the elbow which has been pushed past the die elbow.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent during the description, particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figo 1 is an elevation of the apparatus for the manufacture of elbows; Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a section of tube which is to be transformed into a bend and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the tube section after its transformation into a bend.
The apparatus comprises a pedestal 10 of a hydraulic press carrying a vice base 12 on which the die 14 is located. The die 14 is composed of two separable halves 14a and 14b, each of them having a recess 16 comprising a vertical cylindrical part 18, a horizontal cylindrical part 20 and a curved part connecting the two rectilinear parts 18 and 20 which it connects. It is clear that the two halves of the die are assembled so that the recesses 16 are in correspondence so as to form in the assembled die an opening of uniform circular section, the ends of which open at the top and on the side of the die. the entire matrix, as shown.
A punch or plunger generally designated by the reference 24 is associated with the die 14 and comprises a cylindrical part 26 shaped so as to fit exactly in the cylindrical part 18 of the passage in the die. The lower end of the plunger 24 is of reduced diameter as shown at 28 and is provided with a circular shoulder 30 perpendicular to the length of the plunger 24.
The lower end of the plunger is also provided with an extension 32 and it has a spherical concavity as shown at 34 for a purpose which will be explained later.
A mandrel 36 provided with a spherical head 38 and a reduced diameter neck 40 is associated with the die 14 and the plunger 24. In the simplified embodiment of the invention which is shown, the mandrel is supported in the socket. position drawn in solid lines by an axis 42 passing through a transverse opening of the mandrel and openings of the side plates 44 which are connected by an upper plate 46. A transverse plate 48 pierced with an opening 50 to receive the threaded end 52 of the mandrel 36 is supported by the side plates 44 on which it can slide vertically. The structure supporting the die also includes a plate 54 connected to the lower end of the side plates.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
44 and bolted to the base 10 by bolts 56.
A flange 57 is provided with ears 58 which are bolted to the vice base 12 by bolts 60 and contact the sides of the plates 44. thus completing the whole of the structure supporting the mandrel on the base 10 of the hydraulic press. Pin 61 unites plates 44 and supports mandrel 36 when pin 42 is removed.
A nut 62 is screwed onto the threaded portion 52 of the mandrel and it has a spherical surface 64 resting on a spherical surface of corresponding shape at the outer end of the opening 50. It should be noted in the above that the mandrel 36 can swing around the axis 42. when the latter is put in place to support it in the position drawn in solid lines. To allow precise adjustment of the position of the head end 38 of the mandrel, a screw stop 66 engaged in a threaded opening of the plate ± 60 is provided. By means of an appropriate adjustment of the stop screw 66. place the head 38 so as to leave the desired clearance between it and the interior surfaces of the passage in the die.
In practice, the spherical part of the ball head 38 of the mandrel has dimensions such with respect to the circular section of the passage in the die that an annular space remains around the ball head in the curved part of the passage of the die. die, this space having a transverse dimension equal to the nominal thickness of the wall of the tube plus the necessary clearance which in the case of a thin-walled tube can be about 0.002 "to 0.004" (0.05 to 0.10 mm ).
The surface of the mandrel in the area S which connects the neck 40 to the ball head 38 is concave as in FIG. 2 shows this best, to serve as a guide surface for the part of the tube located on the inner side of the elbow.
The tubular blank is shown at 70 and its beveled ends 72 and 74 are sized to provide the material necessary to maintain substantially the same wall thickness in the completed bend as in the blank. The long side 76 of the blank obviously corresponds to the outer radius of the bend and provides the additional material necessary to prevent excessive thinning of the wall of the bend.
The spherically concaved end surface 34 of the plunger is shaped to receive and partially envelop the spherical head 38 of the mandrel and the extension 32 of the plunger must extend the annular space 78 between the reduced portion 28 of the plunger and the adjacent surface. of the passage in the die up to the vicinity of the zone designated by the letter D so as to guide the material of the tube as much as possible when it is pressed around the intermediate curved part of the passage in the die.
In practice, the extension 32 of the plunger can extend very close to the area designated by the letter Do
In use, the mandrel 36 occupies the position shown in solid lines and is retained in this position by the pin 42 which is inserted through the aligned openings in the mandrel and the side plates 44. The exact position of the spherical head 38 of the mandrel is determined by the adjustment of the screw stop 66. As has been said above, the base 10 is that of a hydraulic press and the plunger or punch 24 is associated with the movable press head. by hydraulic pressure so as to force the tube section 70 from the position drawn in dotted lines in FIG. 2 in the position shown in solid lines in the same figure.
It should be noted that the movement of the plunger 24 forces one end of the tube section into the intermediate curved part of the passage of the die and into the annular space delimited between the spherical head 38 and the adjacent surfaces of the passage in the die. The part of the tube section which is thus forced into the annular passage is slightly deformed and takes a shape which is approximately that shown in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 2. To complete the elbow, retain axis 42 and move the chuck to the right by means of a suitable device.
In the simplified form of the invention shown here, the displacement of the mandrel can be obtained by the rotation of the nut 62 so as to cause the ball head 38 to exit through the deformed end of the elbow. separate the two halves 14a and 14b of the die and remove the completed elbow. At this time the bend has the shape shown at 80 in FIG. 4 and to finish it suffices to deburr the irregular end 82.
It should be noted that the upper part of the tube section 70 is confined in the space between the reduced part 28 of the plunger and the adjacent surface of the passage in the die and that, therefore, the thickness of the wall of the tube section at its upper end cannot be significantly increased. Further, the bend is formed without serious thinning of the bend wall outside the spoke by the extra material provided by the long side 76 of the tube member.
The guide surface S between the head 38 and the reduced diameter neck 40 of the mandrel serves to shape and guide the part of the bend within its radius to give it the shape shown in FIG. 2 and the removal of the chuck head completed to give this surface the small radius shown in Figs. 2 and 40
The result of the operation is to compress the outer radius of the bend by forcing material between the die cavity and head 38. This tends to thicken the wall of the bend where it would normally thin. At the same time, the small inner radius is formed in tension substance by the withdrawal of the mandrel.
It is clear that the representation of the present invention is simplified for the sake of clarity and that in reality an automatic device can be provided to bring in place and move the mandrel in order to speed up production. However. the principles of operation are illustrated by the simplified structure described above and the modifications necessary to make the operation more fully automatic remain within the scope of the present invention.
Although the invention has been described using a cylindrical tubular blank, it is obvious that it is also applicable to other shapes of square tubes. oval. etc.
In the above drawings and description of the improved method and apparatus for making small radius elbows, use has been made of clear, concise and correct terms to enable any person not skilled in the art to practice the invention. .
