<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

It has been established that some new derivative banks of 2methyl-4-cyclohexyl-phenol, i.e. 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-6-methylaminomethyl-phenol and salts thereof, exert in vitro and in vivo a strong fungicidal action.
The preparation of 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-6-methylaminomethyl-phenol can be carried out by a process characterized according to the invention in that the 2-methyl-4-cyclohexylphenol according to Mannich is heated in a solvent with formaldehyde or a polymerized form of formaldehyde and with benzylmethylamine or a se thereof, and the compound formed is stripped of its benzyl group by hydrogenation, whereupon the 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-6-methylaminomethyl-phenol formed may be transformed into one of its salts, for example hydrochloride.
The new 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-6-methyl-aminomethyl-phenol hydrochloride melts at 200-2010C. It is colorless, dissolves easily in water and alcohol, where it takes a slightly acidic reaction.
It is odorless and has a bitter taste. It can be used as a fungicide in the form of an ointment or a powder, in the latter case preferably in admixture with other powders, such as talc or diatomaceous earth.
The maximum dilutions, in which 2-methyl-cyclohexyl-6-methylaminomethyl-phenol hydrochloride still has an inhibitory action on the growth in broth culture of pathogenic fungi of the skin, are as follows:

On the other hand, undecylenic acid, which is a clinically renowned preparation for the treatment of dermatomycosis, only prevents the growth of trichophyton strains up to a dilution of 1: 1000 (Klinische Wochenschrift 1950, page 429).
In guinea pig infections with trichophyton mentagrophytes, treatment with 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-6-methylaminomethyl-phenol hydrochloride 10% ointment will reduce the duration of fungal infection of the coat by approximately half, while when treated with 10% undecylenic acid ointment. infection lasts as long as in untreated control animals.
EXAMPLE.
193 parts by weight of 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-phenol (melting point 120-123 C; boiling point 165-166 C / 12 mm.), Easily obtainable by reaction of dialkylamines with formaldehyde and 4- cyclohexyl-phenol and subsequent hydrogenation are dissolved in 500 parts by volume of absolute alcohol and added 121 parts by weight of methylbenzylamine. Then 30 parts by weight of paraformaldehyde are introduced, with stirring and heating to boiling under reflux, within 2 hours, allowed to boil for a further 8 hours, the alcohol is distilled off in vacuo, and dissolves the residue in ether.
This ethereal solution is further purified by shaking it until exhaustion with 400 parts by volume of 3N hydrochloric acid in several portions, the clear aqueous solution is made alkaline (proof with phenolphthalein) by means of ammonia, then extracted, in several portions, until exhausted with a total of 400 parts by volume of ether. The ethereal solution is washed with 50 parts by volume of water, dried over sodium sulfate. then the ether is separated by distillation.
200 to 250 parts by weight of 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-6- (methyl-benzyl-aminomethyl) -phenol are thus obtained in the form of a yellow oil, which is hydrogenated as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
200 parts by weight of 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-6- (methyl-benzyl-aminomethyl) - phenol are hydrogenated in 2000 parts by volume of methanol, 190 parts by volume of 3N hydrochloric acid and in the presence of 20 parts by weight of palladium on carbon (1 part by weight of palladium). As soon as the calculated amount of hydrogen has been absorbed, the palladium on carbon is filtered off and the filtrate is evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The residue is recrystallized from alcohol. Pure 2-methyl-4-cyclohexyl-6-methylaminomethyl-phenol hydrochloride melts at 200-2010C.
The new compound forms colorless crystals. It dissolves easily in water and alcohols with slight acid reaction.
