Bergwerksgesellschaft HIBERNIA Aktiengesellschaft, résidant à HERNE (Allemagne) PROCEDE ET APPAREIL POUR LA PREPARATION DE PHENOLS ET DE CETONESo (Inventeurs ; E. Rindtorff, K. Sianmitt et Dr. Sodomann).

Bergwerksgesellschaft HIBERNIA Aktiengesellschaft, residing in HERNE (Germany) METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THE PREPARATION OF PHENOLS AND KETONESo (Inventors; E. Rindtorff, K. Sianmitt and Dr. Sodomann).
For the preparation of phenols and aliphatic ketones, it has already been proposed to add [alpha] -dialcoyl-arylmethyl hydroperoxides to a homogeneous reaction medium comprising acetone and concentrated sulfuric acid, the concentration sulfuric acid in the reaction medium being between 0.05 and 10% by weight. Apart from phenols, this process gives additionally and simultaneously aliphatic ketones.
For example, 0 (, 0 {-dimethylbenzyl hydroperoxide is added gradually to a solution of acetone and about 1% by weight of concentrated sulfuric acid, at a temperature of about 65 ° C. In this case, the sulfuric acid is neutralized in the reaction mixture and this mixture is distilled to obtain the phenol, then all of the acetone can be extracted also by distillation.
The object of the present invention is also a process for the preparation of phenols and ketones starting from these hydroperoxides; a process which, however, operates in a continuous manner in contrast to the processes just described, and in which the ketone is extracted from the reaction mixture by continuous distillation and immediately after its formation. The new process offers this further advantage that the sulfuric acid used for the separation of the hydroperoxide can be reused indefinitely without the need to neutralize it. For carrying out the process, the column shown in the accompanying drawing is preferably used, filled with Raschig rings between the base A and the dephlegmation tube K.
In Z we introduce 10% sulfuric acid, in Z2 we introduce a solution of about 50% of cumene hydroperoxide in the cu- lead, that is to say 1 part of hydroperoxide solution for about 2-3

parts of 10% sulfuric acid. The mixture of sulfuric acid and cumene hydroperoxide solution is brought to a temperature of 105 ° C., and the peroxide is decomposed into acetone and phenol.
At the temperature of 105 ° C., which is the boiling point of sulfuric acid, the acetone formed in the decomposition chamber B is removed from the mixture contained in this chamber. It is separated from the cumene transformed in part G of the column, and from the water in the dephlegmator K, so that pure acetone is obtained by distillation in D. The mixture of cumene and phenol is discharged from the decomposition chamber B to E2, and the phenol is separated from the cumene by distillation.
The sulfuric acid accumulated in the lower part A of the column is evacuated at E1, and it is reintroduced at Z1 into the circuit inside the column.
The various points intended for temperature measurement are indicated at T.
The process can be applied to all hydroperoxides obtained by oxidation of alkyl-substituted aromatic compounds having the structural formula
EMI2.1
in which R1 and R2 denote alkyl groups and Ar an aryl or alkylaryl group.
Thus, the corresponding phenols and ketones are obtained starting from the hydroperoxides of diisopropylbenzene and. / $ - isopropylnaphthalene.
