<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS ADDRESSED TO DIAMONDING DEVICES FOR PUMPS
CENTRIFUGES AND SIMILAR PUMPS.
The invention relates to priming devices for centrifugal pumps and similar pumps.
The main object of the invention is to provide an efficient device ensuring the automatic priming of pumps of this type when they are working with a certain suction height, as is necessary for example when the liquid is pumped from sumps: , pits or wells, so that the pumps start in all cases and continue to operate. The priming device should operate without valves, or the like, which tend to jam when the pump draws in a liquid containing suspended solids.
In accordance with the present invention, a priming device for a centrifugal pump or the like, comprises a priming vessel having an inlet opening and an outlet opening, as well as an inner tube with a converging bore, disposed with its bore in line with the inlet and outlet openings, the largest diameter of the bore being greater than the diameter of the inlet opening and the smallest diameter of the bore being not larger than the diameter of the inlet opening, the tube being disposed with its larger diameter end adjacent to the inlet opening.
In a particular priming device, according to the invention, the tube has a series of perforations or holes formed in its wall near the end of large diameter, and it is fixed to a plate, established with the opening d 'inlet formed therein, and suitable for being fixed to the receiving or priming receptacle.
The receiving or priming vessel is coupled to the pump by means of a short length of conduit, and is arranged so that its outlet opening is above the inlet of the pump.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
To prevent siphoning of liquid out of the priming vessel when the pump is stopped, a small tube is disposed between the pump outlet duct and a point of an inlet duct to the priming vessel, which is close to the junction of this conduit with this receptacle.
By way of example of the invention, a centrifugal pump equipped with a priming device according to the invention will be described below in more detail, with reference to the appended drawing which shows a side elevation, part in section. , the pump and the priming device.
Referring to the drawing, it can be seen that the centrifugal pump 1 is of a well known type, comprising a control shaft 2 mounted in bearings inside a housing 3 disposed on a base 4.
The pump 1 is shown in the drawing as pumping liquid from a pit, sump or well 5 via a conduit 6; Shaft 2 normally carries a pulley (not shown) for its belt drive from a suitable motive force source (also not shown).
The pump has an inlet opening 7 which is connected by a short length of curved conduit 8 to an outlet opening 9 of a priming vessel 10. The priming vessel 10 is cylindrical in shape, and is arranged with its axis placed vertically. The upper end of the container is open and, as can be seen in the drawing, is normally closed by a plate II having a central opening 12 constituting the inlet opening of the container. A converging bore tube 13 is attached to plate II and extends inside container 10 when the plate is in place. A series of perforations or holes, 14, are formed in the tube 13 in a location adjacent to its junction with the plate 11.
The tube 13 is disposed in the container so that its bore is aligned with the inlet and outlet openings 12 and 9, and so that the bore converges towards the outlet opening 9. The larger diameter Ie or maximum of tube 13, which is at the end attached to plate II, is larger than the diameter of inlet opening 12 by about 37%. The internal diameter of the other end of the tube 13, defined as the smallest or minimum diameter, is slightly less than the diameter of the inlet opening, for example 18% smaller.
Liquid is pumped from the pit, sump or well 5 via the conduit 6, the end flange of which is attached to the plate II. A small tube 15 is connected as shown between the duct 6, just above its connection with the plate 11, and an outlet duct 16 of the pump I.
Initially and before the pump 1 is put into operation, the receptacle 10 is filled with liquid, which flows to the pump 1, the pipe 6 containing only air at this stage. When the pump 1 begins to operate, liquid is first pumped from the container 10 and the air from the conduit 6 is drawn into the container. As air is sucked from the pipe 6, liquid from the pit, sump or well 5 is also sucked into the pipe and shortly after the pipe 6 is filled with liquid which passes through the pipe 13 into the pump and is therefore sent to the repression of the latter. It will be observed that when this occurs, the level of the liquid has dropped in the reservoir 10 and there is a certain amount of air in it above the liquid.
As the pumping continues, this air is gradually drawn into the liquid passing through the tube 13 ′ due to the perforations or holes 14.
Aisni, a stage is quickly reached for which all the air has been evacuated d; container 10 which is, therefore, filled with liquid. This effectively reduces the height at which the pump operates and increases its efficiency or efficiency. During operation, liquid is drawn in through line 6, through opening 12 in tube 13, and thus into pump I via opening 9 and line 8. When pumping ceases, line 6 will tend to siphon. liquid out of the priming vessel 10. The siphoning action is however stopped before any substantial loss of liquid occurs from the pump I, through the tube 15 which breaks the vacuum in the conduit 6, and the air can access container 10 again.
As a result, a sufficient quantity of liquid is always left in the pump 1 so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
it can resume pumping when necessary. it will be seen that by mounting the tube 13 on the plate II, the removal of the tube is simplified, thus facilitating repairs and maintenance. The interior of the container 10 is easily accessible for cleaning.
The absence of valves or flaps allows the device to be used with liquids containing suspended solids.
