PROCESS FOR THE REDUCTION OR MELTING OF MISCELLANEOUS ORES AND MISCELLANEOUS METALS BY REHEATING OUT OF CONTACT WITH THE FLAMES OF COMBUSTION AND OVEN A
FUEL FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PROCESS.
The present invention relates to a process for the reduction and / or smelting of various ores and various metals by heating out of contact with the combustion flames and a fuel furnace (solid, liquid or gaseous) for the implementation of this process. .
As regards the process, the invention consists in preparing a molten slag, contained in a basin divided into two or more parts in one or more of which the slag receives the heat of the flame, while in at least one of the parts remaining the slag receives from above the load formed by powdered materials or small pieces. As these materials heat up, the slag causes metallurgical reactions which result in the formation of new slag and metal (or alloy) which precipitates to the bottom.
Naphtha, gas or solid fuel furnaces can be used; it is possible, for example, to adapt with some modifications a Martin-Siemens furnace by heating the slag in a basin which communicates through one or more orifices, with one or more additional basins, placed out of contact with the flame; the molten materials arrive, through these orifices, in the additional basins, to which the load layer is made to arrive which receives the heat of the slag placed below, keeping out of contact with the flame.
The passage from the heating basin to the reduction (or melting) basin must be arranged so that the molten materials can circulate freely, absorbing the heat in one basin and releasing it in the other. This circulation can be obtained, for example, by temperature differences between the various layers.

The partition wall between two basins is subjected to very high temperatures and can optionally be cooled by circulating liquid inside.
The gases released from the feed can be collected and used in various ways, for example to heat furnaces intended for carrying out the process.
Fluxes are also introduced into the load, following the usual metallurgical technique and it is necessary to take into account the nature of these fluxes, which influences the composition of the slag, to prepare the lining of the furnace which can be built, depending on the case. in an acidic, basic or neutral material,
The height of the load materials floating on the slag bath may vary, depending on. dimensions of the oven, for example 20 to 60 cm.
The products of the melt of the feedstock (metal and slag) can be poured either from the heating basin of the molten bath or from the charge reduction basin.
The soles of the two basins can be at the same level or at different levels in order to lower the molten metal into one of the two basins.
In the case where the metal from the reduction basin descends into the basin where the heating of the molten bath takes place (for example in a modified Martin-Siemens furnace), it is possible to obtain in this second basin a partial decarburization of the metal, -The ovens can be fixed or tilting.
It is possible, by dosing the reducing agent, composed of mineral or vegetable carbon, powder or small pieces, to produce a molten metal with a variable content of carbon or of other alloying elements.
It is thus possible to produce more or less carburized ferro-alloys, by varying the composition of the materials of the charge.
Although the method preferably relates to ferrous materials, it is nevertheless applicable to the metallurgy of various metals.
The furnace is suitable for melting, out of contact with the flame and possibly in the presence of inert gases, metals and various debris (scraps) which in this way melt without deteriorating.
It also lends itself to the treatment of sulphides, by collecting and using the gases which are evolved.
The construction of the furnace does not require a particular description since it suffices to modify the furnaces of the known type so as to create therein communicating basins, of which at least one is exposed to the flame, while another is protected. contact with it.
To reduce the corrosion of the masonry of the furnace by the slag, the furnace can be constructed with a single basin, but divided into several zones by means of masonry partitions which descend from the vault of the furnace and do not come into contact with the free surface of the bath, These partitions make it possible to heat the slag with a flame in one part of the basin and, in a different part, to heat the load by the action of the fluid slag which is in communication with the heated part directly.
