IMPROVEMENTS IN THE SPRINGS.
(Inventors: A. Boschi and G. Martorana). metal is The combined use of rubber springs and metal springs is known, particularly that of coil springs with rubber springs working under compression.
These combinations generally consist either in making the coil springs work in parallel with rubber springs under compression, or in arranging them separately, as in FIG. 1, in which the rubber spring consists of a stack of rubber rings 1, separated by metal plates 2, the coil spring being represented by 3, or again to be vulcanized directly, the rubber of so as to encompass the metal part, thus forming a single body according to FIG. 2, where 2 denotes the coil spring and 1 the rubber one.
The advantages obtained in this way are in the first place the possibility of modifying the diagram of the spring, from the rectilinear path of the coil spring, denoted by .4 in FIG. 3 to the curved line 6 of FIG. 4, which is obtained by the sum of diagram * of the coil spring and diagram 2 of the precompressed rubber spring, and to obtain a spring having a certain hysteresis given by part 1 in rubber.
The present invention relates to an improvement in combined metal-rubber springs, with a view to achieving a subsequent modification of the deformation diagram, particularly advantageous in certain applications and making wider use of rubber hysteria. - cabbage.
An illustrative and non-limiting embodiment of the present invention provides, in a spring of the type indicated in fig 2, the molding and vulcanization with attachment to the metal, of the rubber part, while the coil spring is attached. found in precompression state.
The rubber will thus be in the state of rest when the spring is subjected to this

te compression, that is, under a certain load and it will work at the. compression when the load and, consequently, the strain increase, it will work on the tension when the load and, consequently, the strain decrease, all as shown in figs. 5 and 6.
In fig. 5, reference numeral 1 denotes the coil spring subjected to precompression 7 during the operation of molding and vulcanizing the rubber part 1; 3 'denotes the extended coil spring; 8 'its free height and 8, its height reduced by precompression.
In fig. 6 the line ¯4 denotes the rectilinear deformation diagram of the coil spring 2 and p 'respectively the deformation and the load corresponding to the compression to which the spring is subjected during the molding and vulcanization of the rubber, or else the imposed deformation which after molding returns the rubber to its natural form; 2 is the deformation diagram of the rubber whose point of zero load, i.e., 'at rest, corresponds to the deformation @ of the coil spring 10 is the total diagram of the spring, which has a double curvature of both sides of the rubber rest point.
As can be seen from this diagram, it is possible in this way to obtain springs having a double curvature diagram and approximately symmetrical compared to a pre-set load. This is advantageous in the case of springs or supports which it is desired that they present a diagram showing a progressive or symmetrical stiffening compared with a fixed load acting on them, as is the case with engine suspensions in motor cars or vehicle suspensions, which have to work in both directions due to road obstacles, protruding or sunken (holes). The embodiment illustrated above is not limiting, as stated above.
Still for information purposes, another embodiment will be described below and shown in plan in FIG. 7, and in section in FIG. 8. In these two figures 11 shows a torsion bar spring, carrying a cross 12 integral with it. Against the arm of the cross 12. rest the rubber cleats 13 which are connected at their other end with the blades 14 connected with a frame 15. This frame 15, in turn. Is part of or is connected with the support member of the torsion bar 11, while the end 17 of the torsion bar is connected to the supported member.
The rubber spring, consisting of cleats 13, is during construction or assembly, placed in the rest position for a deformation of the torsion bar corresponding to an angle 7 and a load P ', and the assembly will therefore have a diagram of the same shape as that shown in FIG. 6.
Another embodiment of the invention is shown in section in FIG. 9 and in plan in FIG, 10, in which 11 -represents a torsion bar around which, while it is in a predetermined defomation state, a rubber spring is molded and vulcanized, consisting of a sleeve in rubber 13 attached on one side to the torsion bar and on the other side to a metal sleeve 15. (which is in one piece or formed by two or more sectors connected to each other by known mechanical means), The head 17 of the torsion bar is connected with the supported member, while the members 15 and 13 are fixed on the support or vice versa.
A variant of the embodiment described above is shown in FIG. 11, in which the rubber spring, instead of being attached directly to the torsion bar 11, is separate and constituted by a rubber sleeve 13 attached to the two metal sockets 15 and 18 and connected with the torsion bar to the by means of a metal hub 12, known per se, such that the rubber spring is in the rest position for a certain deformation of the torsion bar.
Similarly, the invention could be applied to a metal spring working in flexion, for example to a bent spring which would be made to work in parallel with a rubber spring, the position of which corresponds to a certain degree. deformation of the bent spring.
