<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

APPARATUS FORMING FILTER AND AUTOMATIC DRAINER APPLICABLE IN PARTICULAR TO A
COMPRESSED GAS LINE.
The present invention relates to an apparatus forming a filter applicable to a compressed air or gas line and also constituting an automatic purger, the latter being controlled by a float, this apparatus making it possible in particular to separate the foreign matter entrained by a gas stream. moving.
The apparatus, object of the invention, was designed with a view to separating or eliminating foreign matter entrained by a stream of pressurized gas running through a pipe serving various stations of use. An important function of this device is the removal of particles of a liquid entrained by the gas stream during its passage through the pipe.
The device is especially useful for eliminating the particles of entrained water and more generally the particles of liquids carried in the compressed air streams which run through the pipes and for automatically evacuating them out of the compressed air system with a minimum loss of air. This apparatus also provides the means of removing the particles of liquids entrained by a gas stream while constituting an accumulation reservoir capable of retaining the particles of liquid thus separated. This apparatus constitutes at the same time a trap controlled by a float capable of rapidly and efficiently evacuating the accumulated liquid but only after a sufficient quantity of this liquid has thus collected.
This apparatus has also been designed to remove solid foreign matter which is in the gas stream as well as the entrained liquid. It comprises an accumulation tank containing a float whose movement actuates a control shutter, thereby allowing pressurized gas to enter the distributor mechanism to facilitate the opening of the trap and consequently the evacuation of the liquid. which has accumulated there,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another feature of the apparatus, object of the invention, resides in its automatic drain capable of operating with the desired efficiency both under static conditions and under dynamic conditions. This trap was designed, in fact,
to empty the liquid that has accumulated there when the system is under pressure when no gas stream passes through it as well as when a gas stream passes through the system. This possibility is valuable in cases where a system carrying compressed gas remains at rest for an extended period of time while remaining under pressure. If the apparatus, object of the invention, is installed in such a pressurized system, the condensation humidity accumulated therein is, in fact, evacuated during the period of rest of the system, so that it is always ready. to work immediately.
Other characteristics and advantages of this device emerge from the remainder of this text and from the appended schematic drawing.
The single figure is a view in transverse vertical section passing through the central plane of this apparatus.
The apparatus which is the object of the invention is essentially intended to separate the foreign matter entrained in a gas stream (such as air) circulating in a pipe by bringing in a conjugate manner a filter element which initially separates these solid foreign matter and a vortex producing device which separates the entrained liquid. This device constitutes at the same time an accumulation tank for collecting the separated liquid and a trap controlled by a float and forming an assembly incorporated in the device, the role of this trap being to automatically evacuate the accumulated liquid out of the tank. system traversed by gas.
As shown in the drawing, the whole apparatus is designated by 11; it is provided with a main part 12 forming its body which serves as a housing for the filter and the liquid separation device. The head 13 of the filter which is fixed to the body 12 has an inlet port 14 and an outlet port 16 for connecting the apparatus to a pipe through which the gas flows.
The head 13 of the filter is provided with an axial appendage 21 pierced with a channel 19, the wall of which is partially threaded and which serves as an outlet orifice for the filter body. A member 17 forming a baffle fixed in this channel by a threaded portion 18 of a boss 23 of this baffle is crossed by a channel 22 serving as the outlet orifice for the air coming from the chamber 24 delimited by the baffle and s' flowing outside. A sealing ring 26 housed in a recess 27 of the boss 23 forms a hermetic seal between the baffle 17 and the head 13 of the filter.
A filter element 31 placed between the head 13 of the filter and the periphery of the baffle 17 is invariably held by a shoulder 28 of this baffle, and by a corresponding recess 29 made in the head 13 of the filter. The filter element 31 is preferably made of sintered bronze. However, a metallic gauze or an equivalent element can also give satisfactory results. A plate 32 forming a flow director is housed in a cylindrical channel 33 formed between the filter element 31 and the body 12 of the filter.
The plate 32 rests on the shoulder 28; it is held on it by the filter element 31 The plate 32 is pierced with a number of holes and provided with paddles 36 attached to it and whose role is to direct the air passing through the filter to impose a circular path on it from top to bottom along wall 37 of swirl chamber 34 Another dome-shaped plate 39 substantially closes off the bottom of the filter body and provides a smooth surface to deflect air to the bottom. outlet port.
The purpose of this plate 39 is to help gently reverse the flow of air in the swirl chamber 34. In fact, any turbulence of the fluid at this point would tend to capture the small particles of liquid which adhere to the bottom of the tank. swirl chamber.

This tubing is normally connected to a purge system subjected to atmospheric pressure. The housing 47 is based on a seal 49; it is held hermetically against it by the connector 48.
This casing 47 has a certain number of orifices 51 adjacent to its periphery, the role of which is to let the water accumulated from the reservoir into the distribution chamber 52 delimited by the casing.

The housing 2 comprises a ribbed seat 52 which extends over a small distance in the distribution chamber. The wire cap is extended upwards by a tube! It into which a short portion of the shutter rod plunges. A ring 84 forming a seal seals around the tube leaving the chamber 77 containing the spring 74 above the diaphragm. This is formed by a flexible disk capable of allowing the back and forth movement of the shutter rod by deformation; it is preferably formed from a synthetic rubber such as, for example, that known under the number of “Neoprene”.
EMI3.12
The shutter rod is provided with a vetticalr21 channel and a lateral channel 94 ensuring communication between the chamber 9.5 delimited by the diaphragm 68 and the channel 82. These channels constitute an air duct which places the chamber 95 under a certain pressure and which then opens the shutter. A series of channels are formed in the stem to prevent the formation of

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
spring 74 remains at a pressure substantially equal to atmospheric pressure.
A float 92 is mounted on the tube 83 in order to be able to perform a free reciprocating movement. This float is preferably made of cellular rubber, but any other type of float can also be provided. An axial tubular part 88 is implanted in the float 92 and fitted onto the tube 83 in order to allow free movement of the float with respect to this tube. This implanted tubular part 88 extends beyond the float and is closed at its upper part by a valve 89 pinned to it. This valve is provided with a seat integral with it and intended to hermetically seal the end of the tube 83 when the float 92 is in the normal position, that is to say when it is not floating.
The tube 83 is provided with an inserted part 86 which forms, on the one hand, a surface forming a seat for the valve 89 and, on the other hand, a longitudinal channel 87.
Radial orifices 91 made in part 88 provide access to the mechanism for distributing pressurized air in the system when the float is raised. 1
During operation, the device is connected, for example, to a compressed air line by means of the inlet port 14 and the outlet port 16. The compressed air stream flows through the tube. inlet channel and passes into the filter chamber, then through the filter element 31.
All the solids which can be entrained are intercepted and retained in the filter chamber and withdrawn upon contact with the distributor mechanism, the air passes through the filter element 31 to gain the cylindrical channel 33 then passes through the orifices of the guide plate of flow 32. This guide plate forces the air in a circle downward along the wall of the swirl chamber 34. The entrained moisture is projected against the wall by the passage of the air, and the water which is separate flowing. the into the tank 43 passing through the holes 44 of the plate 39. The resulting clean air escapes bypassing the baffle 38 and passing through the channel 22, then into the circuit to escape through the outlet port. 16.
The interior 46 of the tank 43 is completely pressurized since it. is in open communication with the swirl chamber 34, however the spring-holder chamber 77 is at atmospheric pressure since it communicates directly with the exterior through the various drain channels 78, 79, 81. ' The chamber 95 delimited by the diaphragm 68 is also at atmospheric pressure when the valve 89 of the float 92 is closed by means of a small sizing orifice 97 communicating with the channel 78.
When sufficient water has accumulated in vessel 43, float 92 rises, opening channel 87, allowing wedge-winning air to enter channel 82. Compressed air passes through the channels 93, 94 into the chamber 95 located under the diaphragm 68. The pressure in the chamber 95 rises rapidly until it overcomes the downward elastic force exerted on the diaphragm, the pressure difference through the wire shutter. causing the diaphragm 68 to rise, which binds the spring.
As it rises, the diaphragm carries the rod 63 with it. The retaining member 56 and the shutter disc 67 are thus lifted away from the seat 57. and the water which has accumulated is discharged out by gravity and air pressure in the tank 43 The water in the tank has access to the shutter through the ports 51. so that the water is normally discharged by flowing to a level corresponding approximately to the base of the orifices 51. The water is thus rapidly exhausted from the tank 43, and the float returns to its normal non-floating position by closing the channel 87.
The calibrator orifice 97 reduces the pressure in the chamber 95 adjacent to the diaphragm 68. The orifice has a smaller section than the channels 87, 93 and 94, so that the air enters the chamber 95 at a faster rate. that it escapes through the orifice 97. As a result, the pressure rises in the chamber 95, overcoming the tension of the spring and the difference in pressures across the shutter wire. by moving the diaphragm. When channel 87 is closed, no air enters the chamber 95 next to the diaphragm

68 but the air in the chamber continues to escape.
When the shape from the pressure in chamber 95 is thus reduced below the spring tension and the pressure difference across the trap, the diaphragm is returned to its unstretched position. The return movement of the diaphragm brings the trap back against its seat. The air which is in the chamber 95 continues to escape after closing the trap until there is equilibrium between it and atmospheric pressure. The trap is then ready for another drain cycle.
The trap acts as an interceptor between the pressure in the reservoir 46 and the atmospheric pressure prevailing in the outlet tubing, so that there is a pressure difference across the trap, whether it is open or closed. This pressure difference across the closed trap must be overcome to open this trap. When this is open, there is still a pressure difference between the vessel and the outlet tubing, and this pressure difference closes the trap when the pressure in chamber 95 is reduced. The spring 74 is calculated so as to constitute an initial actuating force acting on the diaphragm. It is therefore sufficient that this spring 74 is weak. The effective purging takes place in a fraction of a second. The loss of air pressure from the system is therefore negligible.
It can be seen from the above that the apparatus, object of the invention, has many valuable advantages. It will be noted that some of its features are adaptable to various variants as well as to other applications. details of construction may be changed, without departing from the invention, in the field of mechanical equivalences.
