PRESSE A PAILLE OU A FOURRAGE A HAUTE DENSITEo
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1

HIGH DENSITY STRAW OR FORAGE PRESS
The present invention relates to a straw or fodder press of the so-called “high density” type.
It is known that the high density presses currently in service, both those working at a fixed station and those equipped with a 'pickup, are of the rolling piston type. This type of machine requires the simultaneous action of three main organs for its operation. , which are: the feeder, which leads the material to be pressed into a hopper, the tamper, which passes the material to be pressed from the hopper into the compression channel, and the piston which compresses the material introduced into the compression by the tamper.
The main drawback of these known high density presses is that they require a high expenditure of energy, especially since, the piston being carried either by rollers, or more simply by wooden or metal slides, there are many friction losses. Other disadvantages are that these presses are very heavy and that the combination of the three members indicated slows down the flow by creating a pressure drop in the flow of the material worked.
The main object of the invention is the production of a high density press in which the number of main members necessary for its operation is reduced to two, by eliminating the tamper.
Another object of the invention is the production of a high density press, which, while having a flow rate greater than that of known presses, requires less power for its operation, this press also being more easily the assembly, on the one hand, of an automatic bale tying device either with twine or with wire, and, on the other hand, of a collector
The high density press according to the invention is essentially characterized in that it comprises in combination a feeder, causing the material to be pressed into the compression channel, and an oscillating piston,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
with a curvilinear stroke, compressing the material introduced into the compression channel, said feeder being produced so that the material to be compressed, discharged onto the apron of the press,
or reduced to a suitable width, for its introduction into the compression channel of the press.
According to another characteristic of the invention the feeder and the oscillating piston both work above the apron of the press onto which the material to be compressed into balls is poured.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description which follows with reference to the appended drawings which represent, diagrammatically and simply by way of example, one embodiment of the high density press.
On these drawings:
Fig 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, of the high density press.,
Figure 2 is a plan view corresponding to that of FIG. l.
Fig 3 is an elevational view of a feeder preferred embodiment.
Fig. 4 is a front view corresponding to that of FIG.
3.
Fig. 5 is a front view, on a larger scale, illustrating the assembly of an articulated tooth or fork of the feeder, this tooth or fork, which is close to the central tooth or fork, being in the position it occupies when the free ends of the teeth or forks are as close as possible.
Fig 6 is a side view, part in section, corresponding to that of fig 5.
Fig. 7 is a partial view similar to that of FIG. 1, showing high density baler equipped with different type pickup
According to the exemplary embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the high-density press comprises a frame C provided with two load wheels R, said press being equipped with a feeder 1, an oscillating piston 2, with curvilinear stroke, a compression channel 1 and d 'a bottom plate or apron on which the material is poured, for example straw, to be baled.
In the case where. the machine is designed to work as a pick-up machine and is pulled in the direction of arrow F, the material to be baled is picked up by the teeth 2.of a pick-up, rotating in the direction of arrow 6, and deposited on the apron 4.
Once deposited on the apron, the material is taken up by the teeth of feeder 1, the points of which describe a curve 8, in the shape of a bean, under the combined action of a crankshaft 9. - whose rotation is controlled by a chain 10 passing over a control pinion 11, integral in rotation with the main gear 12, and over a pinion 13 secured to the crankshaft 9 and with a number of teeth equal to that of the pinion 11 - and a lever L of which the teeth of feeder 1 are integral. This lever L'is journalled on the crankpin 14 of the crankshaft 9 and is articulated at a point 15 at the end of a connecting rod 16, the other end of which is journalled on an axis fixed at a point 17.
The material driven by the teeth of the feed 1 is deposited in front of the face of the piston 2, which is supported by two arms 18, journaling at one of their ends on a pin 19. This piston 2 is driven by a movement. semi-circular, indicated by the arrow 18 ', from the main gear 12. via a connecting rod 20, said gear 12 being itself controlled by the pinion 21
By moving in the compression channel 3, in the direc-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
tion of the arrow 22, the material pushed and compressed in this channel by the piston 2, causes the toothed wheel 23 to turn which, by turning, releases a fa-
EMI3.1
classic rotation of shaft 24.
This causes, in turn, by means of the crank 26, coming from the material -, with it, the biel-
EMI3.2
the Z1 and the crank 28, integral with the shaft 29. the up and down of the needle 3SL which carries the string or the wire to the knot 22 integral in rotation with the shaft 2.
On each triggering, caused by a rotation of given amplitude, of the wheel 23, a ball of determined length is formed in the compression channel 1 and surrounded by one or more ties of string or wire.
Although the high density oscillating piston press described can be equipped, as is often the case for high density rolling piston presses, with a knife, placed at 31, and working in return with a another knife, placed at 32, these two knives having for purpose to cut the handle of material which could have slipped between the underside of the piston 2 and the lower part of the channel ± = and to be incorporated at the same time in the ball coming from to form and in the next ball, the invention provides a device for the purpose of lifting, at the time of a ball, said handle of material and presenting it in front of the face of the piston at a fairly high point so that it is swept away.
This device is composed, in the example of FIG, 1, by a series of cleats 33 distributed over the width of the lower apron that they cross.
EMI3.3
pour. As shown, these cleats .33. are integral with a shaft 34. provided by keying with a crank 35, on the end of which is articulated one end of a connecting rod 36, the other end of which is connected to a
EMI3.4
lever arm 37. The latter is journaled on an axis 38 and its free end comes to bear on a cam 40, integral in rotation with the shaft controlling the needle or needles 30.
When forming a material ball, the shaft 29 rotates
EMI3.5
in the direction of arrow 41 and drives with it the cam 40, so that the lever 37. which pivots on the axis 38. is released and is biased by the spring 42 attached to the connecting rod 36. It follows that the cleats 33 are then lifted, by means of the crank 35, and penetrate inside the compression channel, entraining the material which has remained adherent to the lower apron of said canalo This avoids that the same handle of material can be incorporated both in the newly formed ball and in the next ball.
Since, for the production of a bale of strongly compressed material, it is necessary that the width of the channel 1 (see fig. 2) is not more than 0.60 m, while at the end of entry of the material into the press, the two vertical walls 43, laterally limiting the apron 4, must have a width of the order of 1.40 m or 1.60 m, depending on whether the material to be compressed is delivered by a pick-up, or out of a threshing machine, it is understood that the operation of the press at high density, is only possible on the condition that the teeth of the feeder 1 can travel in paths which are not parallel between them, but who follow ap-
EMI3.6
proximately the lines designated by 44. in FIG. 2.
This result is obtained by equipping the press with a feeder of the type shown in FIGS. 3 to 6, and which has five teeth or
EMI3.7
forks (hereinafter referred to as teeth) 5., j, 42., 48 and 49. carried by two sleeves 2Q and mounted loosely on the crankpin 14 of the crankshaft 2.and kept at a constant spacing 9.with the aid of the axis 15 and the root, fork-shaped, of the central tooth 45 which is mounted fixedly on these two sleeves.
EMI3.8
As shown, the sleeve ± ± is provided with two oscillation axes 52 and 53 on which are articulated, respectively, the teeth 46 and z. Likewise, the sleeve 51 is provided with two oscillation axes 5,4 and on which are articulated, respectively, the teeth 47 and 42 "The arrangement of the axes

tJ / lo Thanks to the embodiment which has just been indicated, the combination of the rotational movement of the crankshaft f, of the articulations 15. of the lever- integral with the central tooth 4i and of the connecting rod 16 connected to the articulation 15 of the lever of central tooth and at a point 1Z, that the whole of the tip of the teeth 45. to 42 describes the curve 8 (figa 1) in the shape of a bean.
Moreover, if we admit that the teeth of the feeder are at their
EMI4.6
maximum spacing (see fig. 4) when the crankshaft 2.and the axis M are set in motion, the free ends of said teeth approach each other
EMI4.7
on the other during a portion (a ...) of a complete revolution of the crankpin '14, which corresponds to the period during which the tines grip the straw or hay to introduce it into the compression channel 3, During this part of complete revolution, the free ends of the teeth pass from their maximum spacing to their minimum spacing. On the contrary, during
EMI4.8
the other part (2 II - J.-.) of the revolution, which corresponds to the period during which the teeth remain inactive, the free ends of these teeth return from their minimum spacing to their maximum spacing.
It follows from the foregoing that during the operation of the feeder its teeth execute a movement analogous to that which can be communicated to the two branches of a pair of scissors, the path taken in
EMI4.9
one direction and the other by the ends of the end teeth 48 and 49. being larger than that traversed by the ends of the intermediate teeth 46
EMI4.10
and 410 It is thus possible to bring, into the compression channel 2, of small width, the straw or hay spread out on the apron 4, of great width, and intended for the production of a bale or bale strongly compressed in the compression channel of the press in which the oscillating piston works 2.
On the freezes. 5 and 6, which partially illustrate a practical embodiment of the feeder mechanism, 14 designates the crankpin of the crankshaft 9, 62 and 62 'the two constituent elements of the sleeve 51 which is produced in

two pieces joined by two bolts 2J. and 631, one of which (63) blocks the rings 61. serving as a bearing for the joint of the tooth! II, the cam and 8 the roller carried by the shorter lever arm of the tooth 47.
It will be noted that in this embodiment, the shorter lever arm of tooth 47 has an eye 0 for mounting the connecting rod 61, and is provided with a tab 65 for hooking the spring 49,
It goes without saying that the profile of the cam 56 must be designed to
EMI4.12
impart to the teeth 46 and 48. and 47. and 49, the suitable lateral movement and during the part of revolution desirable, so that they open, to sweep the wide part of the apron 4, and close again, to bring the material into the compression channel 3.
When the press is only working at a fixed station, and being fed either by hand or by a threshing machine, it is preferably provided with four wheels, two of which are mounted on a pivoting front axle. These wheels are shown in phantom in figs. 1 and 2 and designated by R '.
Preferably, the frame C of the press, will be arranged so that the installation and removal of these additional wheels can be carried out quickly and easily. Of course, for this manual, the pick-up is disassembled.
If the baler equipped with a pick-up must only be used occasionally -

If it is stationary, it can be used without any disassembly, either by feeding it by hand and letting the pick-up rotate, or by disengaging the pickup and feeding it by depositing the material to be pressed on the apron 4. or by letting the straw coming from a threshing machine fall on the same apron. -
In the example which has been described so far, the press is equipped with a pick-up comprising only one axis of rotation.
In the example of fig 7, on the contrary, the pick-up has two axes of rotation located at different levels, this pick-up essentially comprising teeth 66, integral with wire rakes, which are themselves fixed to a chain 68, driven, through the intermediary of the two pinions 69, with a movement going in the direction of the arrow 70. In this case, the teeth 66 pass through slots in the sheets 71, on which the material slides. , which is released by said rakes when it arrives in the curve 72 of the sheets 71, in which the teeth 66 are eclipsed. After having crossed the curved part 72, the material falls by inertia on the bottom 73, (which corresponds to the bottom of FIG.
1) and is taken up by the feeder device l,
It goes without saying that the high density press has been described and shown only for explanatory purposes, in no way limiting, and that various modifications of detail could be made to the embodiment indicated; therefore falls within the scope of the invention. It is thus that it can be equipped with any kind of feed mechanism making it possible to bring back to a suitable width the material discharged on the bottom 4 or 73, so that it can enter the compression channel 3, which , as said above, is of a width less than that of the inlet end of said bottom.
A type of feeder which could also be suitable is that which would consist, for example, of a movable apron, provided or not with bars or teeth, the width of this apron being reduced to the width of the channel, or by fixed side walls, placed in a suitable oblique manner and the lower part of which would come tangent with the bars of the apron, or by mobile walls which tighten towards the channel by a movement combined with that of the piston. Finally, in the case of a pick-up with two axes of rotation, these can be located at the same level.
CLAIMS.
1) High density straw or fodder baler, characterized in that it comprises in combination a feeder making the material to be pressed into the compression channel and an oscillating piston with curvilinear stroke compressing the material introduced into the compression channel , said feeder being made so that the material to be compressed discharged onto the apron of the press is brought back to a width suitable for its introduction into the compression channel of the press.
