<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS TO INFLATION VALVES FOR PNEUMATIC BANDAGES.
The present invention relates to inflation valves for pneumatic tires, particularly for the inner tubes of bicycle tires.
The standard cycle inner tube inflation valve comprises a hollow stem, externally threaded, and sealingly secured at one end to the inner periphery of an inner tube. This rod contains an inner part provided at one end with an axial tail.
An orifice is drilled axially in the inner part and a neighboring part of the tail, and results in orifices passing radially through the tail between its ends. The tail has a conical part forming a seat where it meets the inner part proper. A rubber pipette is threaded over the tail and its conical seat portion, and the inner part is introduced into the hollow rod, tail first until the conical seat portion, covered with rubber, comes into tight contact. with a conical surface complementary to an annular shoulder directed towards the inside of the rod. The relative angular movements between the inner part and the rod are prevented by two ears of the inner part which engage in axial slots of the rod.
The inner part is attached to the rod by a ring in engagement with the ears of the inner part which screws onto the rod.
The end of the inner part, outer with respect to the ring, is threaded so that a pump or the like can be attached thereto.
To inflate the inner tube, pressurized air is expelled through the orifice which extends axially through the inner part, and through the holes which extend radially in the tail and this air, lifted the pipette. rubber, passes between the pipette and the <tail inside the tube. The passage of air in the opposite direction is prevented by the rubber pipette which applies tightly to the tail of the inner part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
But the very thin rubber pipette stretched over the tail of the inner piece is breathable, and the inner tube deflates slowly because the air in it passes through the pipette. This leak is of little importance when the inner tube is also permeable to air, and when the air pressure must be re-established a few days apart. However, nowadays inner tubes for cycles and the like are often made of butyl rubber, which is substantially impermeable to air. It is therefore desirable to have a substantially sealed, and fitted, inflation valve in order to maintain the pressure. desired swelling, a device for measuring this pressure.
The object of the invention is to provide an interior part suitable for an inflation valve stem of the type described, making it possible to obtain a practically sealed valve, inexpensive to manufacture and easy to assemble, provided with a device. 'whereby the inflation pressure of the air chamber can be measured without difficulty. Another object of the invention consists in providing an inflation valve exhibiting these various advantages.
According to the invention, an internal part for an inflation valve comprising a valve stem provided with an internal surface forming a seat comprises a cylindrical element provided with a sealing ring cooperating with said surface forming a seat, a device holding the ring d. 'sealing against the surface forming a seat so as to prevent the passage of fluid, an axial passage from one end of the inner part to the other, and a needle playing in this passage, provided with a head at an end adjacent to 'one end of the passage, and at the other end, a closure member forming with the other end of the passage a fluid-tight seal.
Also according to the invention, an inflation valve for inner tubes comprises a hollow valve stem capable of being sealingly attached at one end to an inner tube, an annular seat formed at the inner periphery of the stem between its ends. ends, an internal part fitting in part to the inside of the rod, provided with a sealing ring cooperating with the seat, a device holding, the sealing ring against the surface forming the seat so as to prevent the passage of the fluid, an axial passage from one end of the interior part to the other, and a needle playing in this passage, provided with a head at one end adjacent to one end of the passage, and at the other end of a closure member forming with the other end of the passage a fluid-tight seal.
The valve stem may be of the usual type comprising a hollow stem with an external thread, fixed in a sealed manner by one end to an air chamber and provided, between its ends, with an annular seat extending inwardly. The inner part fits in part inside the rod and comprises a sealing ring cooperating with the seat of the rod, and a device for holding it in position relative to the rod.
The axial passage of the inner part preferably widens at each end into a cavity of larger diameter, and the needle axially passing through the passage may be provided with a point on which is threaded, coaxially and centrally, a rubber shell. , forming the closure member and which is retained on the needle by the elasticity of the rubber.
The needle may be an ordinary pin whose head has two flats which allow pressurized air to enter the passage even when the head is pressed to the bottom of one of the cavities. The rubber shell serves as a valve, sealingly resting on the edge of the other cavity of the interior piece.
As the inner part according to the invention is intended to cooperate with a valve stem of a valve of the normal type, this valve can be easily transformed by removing the usual inner part and replacing it with an inner part constructed according to the present invention. invention.

For a fuller description of the invention, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an inner part for an inner tube inflation valve for cycles constructed in accordance with the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a complete valve including the interior part shown in FIG. 1 and a standard rod.
The inner part (Figs. 1 and 2) comprises a hollow cylindrical element 1, one end of which is externally threaded at 2. In the vicinity of this threaded part, two diametrically opposed rectangular ears 3 extend radially towards the end. 'outside. The end of the inner part opposite the threaded end is of smaller diameter, and an annular rubber seal or the like 4, of rectangular section, is placed against the shoulder thus formed. A passage 5 is formed centrally and longitudinally in the element 1 and comprises at one end a coaxial cavity 6, of larger diameter, and at the other end a similar cavity 7. A needle 8 is placed in. passage 5, the diameter of the needle being smaller than the diameter of the passage.
One end of the needle is provided with a head 9 sliding in the cavity 7. This head comprises two flats allowing pressurized air to enter the passage. A shell 10, made of rubber or the like, is mounted at the end of the needle opposite the head, and comprises a frustoconical surface 11 forming a seat and resting on the neighboring edge of the cavity 6 to serve as a valve. When the shell 10 is in this position, the head 9 is substantially flush with the corresponding end of the inner part.
Needle 8 may be an ordinary pin with a head at one end and pointed at the other. The rubber shell is threaded centrally and coaxially over the pointed end of the pin and then the tip of the pin is removed.
The hollow valve stem (Fig. 2) has at one end a sealed fixing device 13 which fits to the inner periphery of a cycle air chamber. The rod is threaded on the outside and provided, at the end opposite 13, with two slits 14 diametrically opposed and directed axially. Between its ends, the central passage of the rod comprises an internal shoulder 15 having a partly conical surface which forms a seat on the side adjacent to the split end. The end of. the neighboring rod of the fixing device 13 is provided with a protective ferrule 16 stamped on the rod between 13 and the threaded part. The valve stem thus described is identical to the standard stems commonly used in cycle valves.
The inner part is mounted in the valve stem, the threaded part 2 projecting outwards and the two ears 3 sliding in the slots 14 of the stem. The seal 4 of the inner part attacks the partly conical surface, forming a seat, of the shoulder 15. A threaded cylindrical ring 17, comprising at one end a flange 18 extending inwardly is placed on the part 2 of the inner part, the flange in contact with one end of the ears 3. The ring screws onto the valve stem 12, thus forcing the inner part into the stem until the seal 4 is deformed and conforms to the profile of the seat partly conical corresponding, as in fig. 2, thus forming a tight seal between the inner part and the valve stem.
A lock nut 19 is screwed onto the valve stem, and a protective cap 20 fits over the threaded part 2 of the inner part. The ring, nut and cap are standard items normally placed on existing cycle valves. @ '
The valve works in the following way. A pump or other source of pneumatic pressure is connected to the threaded portion of the inner part, and pressurized air from this source passes through the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
passage of the interior room. The valve is lifted from its seat and the pressurized air from the source passes past the valve, into the stem and finally into the air chamber.
When the air pressure from the pump or other source ceases to be exerted and the pressure in the air chamber is higher than atmospheric pressure, this higher pressure in the air chamber closes the valve and prevents the exit. air under pressure from the interior part.
The inflation pressure in the air chamber can be easily measured by screwing a cylindrical adapter onto the inner part to increase its outer diameter. A standard pressure gauge, model for automobiles, can then be placed at the end of the interior part in the usual way. The pin of the gauge engages with the needle head to depress it and open the valve. Compressed air in the air chamber passes through the interior piece and into the gauge where it moves the gauge piston in the usual way to indicate tire pressure.
An inflation valve constructed in accordance with the present invention can be manufactured and fitted without great expense, is more airtight than existing valves and enables inflation pressure to be measured.
