6.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

the pump to operate continuously, even if the fluid cannot enter either of the supply lines.
Another United States Patent Application No. 626 'Q74 entitled "Hydraulic Reversing Valve" and filed describes a novel valve device which alternately directs the flow of lubricant under pressure through the valve. the respective supply pipes and a device sensitive to a determined pressure in the pipe into which the current is thus directed and which actuates this valve so as to direct the current in the other pipe and to make the pipe communicate - lisation which does not receive lubricant with the outlet. This patent application also gives the description of one form of a "Dualine" device which comprises lubricant distribution valves of the aforementioned general type.
Reference may also be made to prior United States of America patents in the name of the Applicant, Nos. 2,068,391 of January 19, 1937 and 2,068,392 of January 19, 1937 which respectively give the description of a certain device. and a lubricating pump delivering lubricant under pressure.
The main object of the invention consists in a simplified and relatively inexpensive automatic device for the delivery of a pressurized lubricant in spans and the like and, more particularly, a pump unit of relatively inexpensive construction and. reduced maintenance.
Further objects of the invention are as follows: a pump unit driven by belt or the like instead of the ordinary gear transmission, but without reducing the precision and efficiency, a pump unit which features a high speed pump, eliminating the need for adjustments, etc. very precise, but nevertheless constructed in such a way as to avoid excessive flow; a pressure lubrication device, in which the loop or circuit of the pressurized line which supplies the lubricant to the metering and dispensing valves can be communicated with the outlet at both ends.
Still other characteristics of the invention will become apparent in the course of the detailed description given below of some embodiments by way of example, with the accompanying drawings in support which indicate some of the embodiments. various means of applying the principle of the invention, and on which: FIG. 1 schematically represents a plan of the double-pipe lubrication device and of the electrical control circuit of this device, constructed according to the principles of the invention, FIG. 2 is an elevation of the new pumping unit according to the invention; fig. 3 is a plan view of this group from which the tank has been removed; fig. 4 is a vertical section taken along line 4-4 of FIG.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
If we consider more particularly FIG, 1, it can be seen that the device according to the invention comprises a pumping unit 1, to which is connected a lubricant reservoir 2. and the pump is driven by an electric motor 3. via a pulley 4, a V-belt 5 and a pulley 6. Twin pipes 2. and 8 for supplying lubricant from the pumping group, lead to the various mechanisms to be lubricated and return to the pumping group 1.
Appropriate metering and distribution valves 2. for lubricant in the twin pipes (one of which is shown schematically in section) are fitted between these pipes and are intended to supply a metered load of lubricant into the door or the like. to be lubricated, when one of the pipes is pressurized and the other communicates with the outlet.
Considering therefore the valve shown in section, when the line 1 is pressurized, the lubricant enters the valve control cylinder 10 to bring the valve member 11 to the position shown and admit the lubricant into the valve. lower end, fig, l, of the metering valve cylinder and pushing the piston 11 to deliver a metered charge of lubricant through the outlet port 14. It should be understood that this special form of valve is not described. only by way of example and does not form part of the invention since it has been known for a long time.
Various other forms of metering and dispensing valves or spools can be employed, if desired, which are similarly operated by a twin-line device.
An electric motor 3, for example a single-phase motor of a quarter of a hp at 1750 rpm, turns the pulley 6 at about 600 rpm. Advantageously, a timer can be employed in the form of a clock movement 15, of a common type, which establishes and maintains single-pole contacts alternately with one and the other of two electrical circuits, at separate times. at equal, but adjustable intervals.
One of the conductors 16 of the motor being connected directly to the energy circuit and the other conductor 17 of the motor being connected to this circuit by the intermediary of two conductors in parallel 18 and 19, each containing one of the two microphones. -switches (limit switches) 20 and 21, see also fig. 2, and one of the timer contacts 22 and 23 in series in the manner ordinarily suitable for establishing a two-station run-hold electrical circuit, the timer 15 initiates operation of the device and , when the hydraulic pressure conditions necessary for the operation of the lubricating device are achieved, the control device which operates by means of the electric limit switches in the manner described in detail below, causes the stopping of the pump. device.
Of course, the device can be controlled by other means than the timer 15. For example, if the timer is replaced by a two-way unipolar switch, with a manually operated push button, the device can be controlled by hand. hand at the desired operating frequency. In addition, the V-belt drive 5. can be controlled by a rotating shaft or other part of the lubricating machine and a magnetic clutch can be used to couple the pulley 6 to the V-belt. its command tree. A timer operated by this machine can replace the electric timer 15 so as to pass the current alternately in the two electric circuits and activate this clutch.
If we consider more specifically figs. 2 to 7 which represent the pumping group 1 and the tank 2, it is seen that this group has a base frame 24 which bolts to a mounting surface and contains an oil-free compartment in which the electrical connections with the micro-switches 20 and 21 can be set. It has a suitable access opening 25 which can be closed by a closure plate 26, and threaded tubular fittings 27 and 28 serve to bring in the electrical conductors not shown terminating at the switches. A pump body 29 is mounted on the base 24; an adjustment valve bolt 3Q is fixed on the lower surface of the pump body and a holder 31 of the reservoir is mounted on its upper surface.
The cylindrical tank 2, of a type
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
current is screwed on the support, figs. 6 and 7, and rests on a lead seal ring 32 so as to form a tight seal.
The pump drive shaft 33 is mounted in thrust ball bearings arranged in a suitable hole 34 of the pump body 29, and its inner end terminates in a portion of larger diameter drilled and threaded so to accommodate an eccentric control shaft 35 of the pump and its stop screw. The cylindrical head projecting from this ex-

If we refer more specifically to fig. 7, we see that the piston is represented there halfway and that, during its movement in a

direction or the other it discovers intake ports 42. or 43. which communicate with the cavity of the reservoir filled with lubricant, thus allowing the lubricant to enter one or the other of the cylinders of the pump .
During the return stroke of the piston the last-opened intake port closes and the piston exerts pressure on the lubricant trapped in the cylinder causing it to open a check and release valve.

The lubricant is thus pumped into the respective valve chambers 46

and wire and the cylindrical check valves 4 and 45, which preferably have packing rings prevent it from reentering the cylinders of the pump.
EMI4.6
The chambers 46. and 42. comprise respective annular channels and 49 communicating with them by transverse holes which themselves communicate by lateral channels 2Q. and 1 with fittings 52. and i1 of the outlet pipes, fig. 2. Each valve chamber 46 and 1 therefore communicates permanently with the respective pipes 2 and 8. for the lubricant outlet.
Channels 5! and 55. depart from the respective chambers and 47 and terminate in a cylinder z, of the control valve box 3 which is bolted via a seal on the lower surface of the pump body 29

This end of the shaft 62 may have the shape of a square on which this crank arm is mounted and fixed by a nut. A tension spring 64 which follows a generally vertical direction is fixed at its upper end to a rod 65 vertically above the axis of the shaft.

A console 67 directed downwards has two projecting end flanges 68 and 69. which limit the oscillating movement of the crank arm 63. and, consequently, of the sector -ru $. The spring 64 obviously exerts a certain action. snap-action return in both directions, keeping the

2. The contacts of these switches are normally closed and, therefore, @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
when this switch control lever is lowered, the contacts of the corresponding switch open.
EMI5.1
Referring again to fig. 71 it can be seen that the piston 5.2 occupies its end-of-stroke position on the left side and is held there by means of the mechanical transmission described above by the action of the res-
EMI5.2
fate spun. In this position, the control piston closes the channel 51 leading to the cylinder 56, since one of the two shoulders of the piston is located directly at the point of intersection of this channel with the cylinder.
But channel 55
EMI5.3
communicates with the end of the right side of cylinder i6. when the piston 21. occupies its position on the left side and consequently, by a channel with the carvity li in which the sector 51 is housed, and, by the central portion of reduced section of the piston 21 and a channel 74, with the lubricant reservoir which is at atmospheric pressure. Therefore, although the supply line 7 communicates permanently with the pressure chamber 47 of
EMI5.4
the pump via channel 1¯, the lubricant from the één chamber can return to the reservoir relatively freely and by a short path and only a nominal pressure increase occurs in the chamber 47, when the piston 57 occupies the position shown.
It will also be noted that the return end 75 of the supply circuit Z communicates in the same way with the exhaust through the channels
EMI5.5
76. and 77. which also communicate with the right side end of cylinder 56. so that there is no pressure at both ends of this supply line. This detail is quite important in particular when it comes to delivering lubricating greases, because the resistance to the flow of these lubricants in the supply pipes gives rise to a residual back pressure, or pressure confined in these. pipelines directly proportional to the distance from the outlet point.
It is therefore possible, by decompression at both ends of the supply circuit, to double the acceptable length of this circuit for a given diameter of the pipe.
EMI5.6
Channels 78. and from the respective ends of the cylinder 56 lead to corresponding vertical channels z and 81. which, in turn, communicate with corresponding horizontal channels 8 and 82. themselves communicating with the lower ends of the cylinder. respective accumulator cylinders, fig. 5. Since these accumulators are exactly alike, only one will be described in detail. A piston 84 can move in the
EMI5.7
two directions in a vertical cylinder 85. of the 3Q box. A packing ring 86 prevents lubricant from escaping an appreciable quantity into the reservoir from the lower chamber below the piston 84, so that the pressurized lubricant arriving below the piston causes it to rise upwards.
EMI5.8
against the action of a spring fla.
A channel 88 extends from the upper end of cylinder 85 and terminates in the reservoir and hence no lubricant fraction can be retained in the cylinder above the piston.
Since, in the position shown, the piston 57 closes
EMI5.9
the channel 54. the lubricant discharged into the epi valve chamber is discharged through the annular channel 48 into the channel 2Q and into the supply line 8. which connects thereto. The return from line 8 communicates by a
EMI5.10
cord 82. with a channel 311 and a vertical channel which communicates with the end of the left side of cylinder 56. then through channel j, channel 8j2. and the channel 82 with the lower end of a corresponding accumulator cylinder .Si. While the lubricant is pumped into the supply line 8 through the channel 50, the pressure in this line and possibly also
EMI5.11
in the end of the left side of cylinder 5 (.,.
and the lower end of cylinder 85 increases until it is strong enough to operate the mated lubrication valves 9. and move piston 84 up against the resistance of spring 87, until that this spring is completely compressed. Once these movements are complete, since there is no additional outlet for the lubricant, the pressure continues to increase in line 8.
It finally reaches a value sufficient to exert on the end surface of piston 57 a force opposing the thrust of spring 64 and, when this pressure is close to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
from 49.2 to 56.2 kg / cm2 for example, this force is greater than the thrust of the spring holding the arm 63 in one of its end-of-stroke positions, and moves the piston 57 from left to right towards its intermediate position in oscillating the crank arm 63 coupled with it.
The spring 64 obviously therefore undergoes an additional elongation, but it will be noted that the lever arm of this spring around the axis of the arm 63 decreases so rapidly by the movement of the crank in the direction of its intermediate position. - re that the force causing this movement of the piston 57 is maximum at the start of this movement. The piston 57 on approaching its intermediate position closes the channels 72, 55 thereby preventing lubricant from returning freely from the check valve chamber to the reservoir.
Then the pressure in the supply line 7. begins to increase not only because the lubricant is forced into it from the valve chamber! Il, but also because of the displacement of the lubricant from the right side end of the cylinder 56 during than the piston 5.1. comes from left to right. This increase in pressure is temporarily limited to a relatively low value by the action of piston 84 pushed by its spring into the other accumulator cylinder 85 communicating with channel 83 and rising in this cylinder, absorbing the volume displaced by it. the piston 57 and the pump.
The displaced volume thus absorbed by the movement of the piston 84 in the latter cylinder 85 must be slightly greater than twice that of the piston 57, once the channel 72 is closed, since it must then absorb the remaining displaced volume of the piston 57 and a substantially equal volume displaced by element 39 on the right side of the pump.
Since the increase in pressure in the right side end of cylinder 56 is thus limited, piston 57 continues its movement from left to right after channel 72 is closed, and crank arm 63 passes its neutral position, so that the spring 64 contributes to the movement of the piston 57 instead of delaying it. The end of the left side of the piston 57 then uncovers the channel 92, thus causing the supply line 8 to communicate with the reservoir through the channels 90, 91 the end of the left side of the cylinder 56, the channel 92, the chamber 73. and channel 93. Likewise, the pressure in chamber 46 expands through channel 54. Movement of piston 57 from left to right stops when crank arm 63 comes into contact with stop 69.
When arm 63 begins to swing from side to side (looking at Fig. 7), it relinquishes limit switch control arm 70 allowing switch 20 to close. But the contact 23 of the timer in series with this switch 22 is open, fig. 1. When the crank arm completes its oscillating movement from right to left, it comes into contact with the control arm 71 of the switch so as to open the limit switch 21 thereby opening the drive circuit of the switch. motor and stopping all movement except the normal movement of the timer or equivalent device 15.
It can therefore be seen that the lubricating device ceases to function when the pipe which has just undergone the peak pressure ceases to be under pressure and before the other supply pipe is placed under high pressure. any. The lubrication device therefore ceases to operate at nominal pressure until the timer opens the contact 22 of the last closed control circuit and closes the other contact 23 by restarting the engine 3. to activate the switch. pump and initiate an operating cycle establishing a control pressure in the supply line 7, actuating the lubricant distribution valves 2. again and terminating again when the pump and the control group have returned to their position initial.
It can be seen from the foregoing that the device according to the invention in reality comprises two separate pumps which are however actuated by a single control element and that only one of these pumps actually acts at one. given moment. These pumps can be operated at high speed and therefore their efficiency is very high despite the relatively short length of their stroke. All it takes is one 57 spool and cylinder bore
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
which contains it is relatively short, thus significantly reducing the cost price of the new device compared to that of previous devices fulfilling the same general function.
The advantages of devices which release the pressure at both ends of the pressurized line circuit, when not in use to deliver pressurized lubricant into the distribution valves, have been previously noted. The two pumps operating simultaneously can operate efficiently at high speed, without the flow being too high, since a single pump can deliver the lubricant in a pressurized line. Special expensive, usually required, teat reversing valves are omitted.
The pressure accumulators - (cylinders 85), one for each pressure line, can be coupled at any point of the corresponding circuits, but they are preferably arranged at the return ends or in the vicinity of these return ends. corresponding circuits, as shown in the drawing. -
Although as has been said, the use of a timer is optional and the mechanism can be controlled by hand or otherwise, it is obviously preferable to provide for it. Limit switches 20 and 21 must operate in synchronism with the movements of the flow change valve (which usually operates them) in order to shut off control of the pump motor.
Various other embodiments of the invention are obvious to those skilled in the art; for example, it is possible to have indicator rods projecting from the ends of the piston 57 in order to be able to follow the operation of the mechanism with the eyes. In addition, these protruding rods can serve to actuate limit switches 20 and 21 instead of using crank arm 63 for this purpose. In fact, the cycle could be interrupted by operating any of the distribution valves. 2. to activate the limit switch in this way. But it is more convenient to end the lubrication cycle, when all the distribution valves in a given circuit have been working.
When the lubricant level in the reservoir has dropped considerably, as indicated by the position of a standard indicator rod 94, additional lubricant can be introduced into the pressure reservoir through a filler cap. 95, figs. 3 and 4. This filler cap comprises a ball check valve 96 subjected to the action of a spring 97 and communicates with the lower end of the reservoir via a channel 98.
