<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PROCEDURE AND INSTALLATION FOR HEATING LIVING PREMISES.
The use of collective heaters operating by circulating hot water or steam implies in dwelling houses comprising dwellings for several families, especially in houses of modest dimensions, high installation and operating costs *. In addition, central hot air heaters are not suitable for such applications because the pipe connections which are necessary give rise to constructional difficulties and because of the need for It is found that cold air is used to operate these heating installations, they are not advantageous from the point of view of thermal efficiency.
The present invention relates to a heating method spé = cially applicable to houses or apartment buildings of modest dimensions and remarkable in that there is provided for each house a single heating device.
In accordance with the method provided for by the invention, the heating fluid is supplied for each dwelling unit provided in the building in question (for example for each dwelling or apartment) to a heat exchanger which is brushed against or swept by air forming a heat-transmitting medium, this air being forced back by a fan into the spaces which must be heated,
According to a particular embodiment of the method in question, the heated air is brought by channels (for example through an intermediate ceiling) to the spaces to be heated, preferably from above, the cold air being discharged out of these spaces. from below, then returned by a circulation forming a circuit to the heat exchanger. The latter is, as far as possible, mounted centrally inside the housing.
According to a preferred embodiment of the object of the invention, the return of the cold air is provided by neutral spaces such as for example the landings or the stairwells or the corridors of the building thus equipped.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
pe. The number of air changes in the spaces in question rationally represents about 5 to 10 changes per hour.
According to another embodiment of the object of the invention, the electrical circuit which serves the fan is connected to a relay forming a contactor-circuit breaker actuated by means of a temperature-sensitive device. This electrical circuit serving the fan can also be closed or opened (depending on the case) using a timer. The heat consumption can be determined by a condensate counter, by a counter indicating the duration of the running time and (or) by an electric work counter.
The invention also relates to a heating installation which can be used for implementing this method and which consists of a central heat exchanger heated by a heating fluid and releasing its heat to the air acting as a transmitting fluid. heat and which is forced by a fan into the spaces to be heated.
The appended schematic drawing represents, by way of examples, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
FIG. 1 is a plan view showing the distribution of a dwelling of modest dimensions equipped with an installation as provided for by the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken in the direction indicated by the line A-B in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view in vertical section through the broken line C-D in FIG. 4 in the hypothesis of a two-storey dwelling house.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the apartment or of the accommodation formed by the lower floor.
Fig. 5 is a heat plan view of the E-F line in freeze 3.
As represented by figs. 1 and 2, it is provided in a central place of the building to be equipped, for example in space 1 consisting of the landing or the corridor of a dwelling house or of an apartment of modest dimensions, for example below the ceiling 2, a heat exchanger 3 housed in an intermediate ceiling 4. This heat exchanger 3. is connected to a fan 5. The space located above the intermediate ceiling communicates through orifices 6, 7 and 8 arranged in the upper part of the walls with spaces 9, 10 and 11 which must be heated. The doors are provided at their lower parts with ventilation openings 12 and 13 for the return of cold air.
The heat exchanger 3. operates using hot water, steam or the like. It gives up its heat to the air which is returned by the ventilator 5, above the intermediate ceiling and by the openings 6, 7 and 8 in the spaces 9, 10 and 11. The air streams enter the room. these spaces downwards, and the veins of cold air 3.are brought in from the floor of these spaces and passing through the openings 12 and 13 towards the stair landing or the corridor 1 and discharged forming a circuit through the heat exchanger 3, where this air is heated again.
It is important, according to the present invention, that only one heat exchanger is provided, placed almost in the central part of the dwelling, so that the transmission of the heat in the spaces to heating is provided by the air forming the heat transmitting fluid and that the air is forced by a fan into the spaces to be heated.
For heating a house or a multi-storey apartment building as shown in Figs. 3 to 5, the heat exchanger 3. is located in the middle part of the apartment or
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
lower housing. The fan 5, which draws air through the mouth 14 of a channel 15 (Fig. 4), discharges the heated air through orifices 16 and 17 into spaces 18 and 19 and through a channel 20 and an orifice 21 in the space 22. In order to heat the upper stage, the air escapes from the channel 15 through orifices 23, 24 and 25 (Fig. 5) to pass into spaces 26, 27 and 28 where it gives up its heat.
The cold air which flows along the floor of the spaces in question, that is to say to the lower part of the doors through orifices 29 and 30, is returned through a neutral space, for example through the stairwell 31 or in the landing or corridor 32, after which it crosses the orifice to re-enter the channel 15 where it is again heated by the heat exchanger 3. It is also provided in the floor lower, in doors or in walls and at their lower part, cold air return ports. These orifices are not specially shown.
It is rational to calculate the size of the air stream supplied by the ventilator so that in one hour the quantity of air which is in the spaces is renewed between five times and ten times, so to avoid stratification or formation of stagnant air layers. It is not necessary to provide for more frequent air replacement, so that no drafts occur.
Practice has shown that it is particularly advantageous to connect a relay forming a contactor-circuit breaker in the electric circuit which supplies the fan, connected to a thermo-sensitive device able to maintain a determined temperature and capable, if this time. - the temperature drops below a given value, to close the fan circuit and, on the contrary, if this temperature exceeds a certain value, to open this circuit, so that the heating is maintained at a de-reduced ambient temperature .
It is also rational to connect a timer in the circuit which serves the ventilator. We obtain, in fact, thanks to this means, the possibility of closing this circuit at a determined moment and opening this circuit after a certain lap.s of time. In this way, for example, tenants of an apartment who have professional occupations and who leave their home at eight in the morning, for example, are given the means to set the timer in question in such a way that the fan circuit is cut off at this time.
If the persons in question are called to return to their home at 5 p.m., for example, they can set the timer so that the fan's electrical circuit is closed automatically, for example at 3 p.m., so that when they arrive at home. they find their apartment suitably heated.
It is easy to calculate the heating costs to be shared by providing, for the operation of the heat exchanger using hot water or steam, an operating time counter or a condensate counter or else. again by determining the electric current consumption of the fan using an electric meter, for example a meter indicating the hourly consumption in watts.
The heating installation provided for by the invention is extraordinarily well suited to the objectives pursued and economical.
It makes it possible to supply the necessary heat units from a central station for a large number of homes, consumption always being adapted to the requirements of the moment in question. This installation lends itself to simple and economical construction. It suffices, in fact, to provide an inlet duct and an outlet duct for the heating fluid, which may for example be hot water or steam. The heat transmission in the various spaces is ensured by air which can be brought through intermediate ceilings or else by a central vertical duct under perfect conditions from an architectural point of view and economically satisfactory.

The details of this installation can be modified, without departing from the invention, in the field of technical equivalences.
