vention en faisant réagir l'hexachlorocyelopentadiène diaprés la réaction dite de Diels-Alder avec l9anhydride mLlêique; le produit dsaddition ain- si formé réagit avec i?ammonieque ou avec un compose produisant de 19 ammo- niaque pour former l'imide du dérivé de 1?acide phtalique ci-dessus;

then treat the resulting adduct as indicated for the hexachlorocyclopentadiene and maleic anhydride adduct. In accordance with the preferred method, hexachlorocyclopentadiene and maleic anhydride are reacted together at temperatures included. between 110 and 220 C, for 10 minutes to 10 hours,., depending on the temperature used.
A preferred temperature range within which the reaction proceeds relatively quickly and satisfactorily is 1400 to 180 ° C. Reaction times exceeding 10 hours are not detrimental; however, it is preferred to limit the reaction period so as to decrease decomposition and incidental reactions. The reaction is preferably carried out in the absence of a solvent, however solvents can be used, if desired. Xylene, methylated naphthalenes and toluene are among the preferred solvents. Paraffinic solvents can also be used. Since the reaction is an addition reaction, it is preferred to use equimolecular amounts of the reactants.
An excess of either reagent does not prevent the reaction, but is not economical. If a solvent is used, it can be removed by distillation or the product crystallized by cooling and recovered by filtration. The product can be purified, if desired, before subjecting it to the next stage of the process. This purification can be carried out by recrystallization from a hydrocarbon solvent such as xylene, heptane or similar solvents.

compound which releases ammonia, for example an ammonium salt such as ammonium carbonate, thus heating aqueous ammonia and the anhydrous adduct gives a product which, after evaporation to dryness and heating to a temperature of about 150o-250oCs gives rise to to the desired 1-halide. Likewise, melting the anhydride adduct with ammonium carbonate gives the desired imide in excellent yields.

The purification of the product can be carried out, if desired, by recrystallizing from a hydrocarbon solvent such as heptane, although this is generally not necessary, since the technical grade product which is obtained as. above usually exhibits a high degree of purity.

The general economy of the process in accordance with the present invention will be better understood by virtue of the detailed description of one of the processes which are the subject thereof and of a preferred example of implementation, which will be described below. given below without limitation.

The preparation of alkyl-cycloalkyl-alkenyl-aryl and aralkyl mercuri-halides is well known to those skilled in the art.
For documentary purposes, we will now give a typical preparation process for ethyl mercuric bromide.
Magnesium (1 mole = 24.3 gb) is introduced into a 3-necked, 1-liter flask, comprising an introducer funnel, a stirrer and a reflux condenser. Precautions are taken to avoid the presence of any moisture in the apparatus and in the reagents. Ethyl bromide (1.05 mol = 114.4 gb) is dissolved in 400 cm3 of ether

The Grignard reagent thus prepared is very slowly introduced into a stirred suspension of mercuric bromide (425 gb) in 200 cm3 of anhydrous ether. The reaction is highly exothermic and the mixture is cooled for this reason. Stirring is continued for as long as heat is evolved from the reaction. We evaporate the
