EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

EMI1.1
ARIETTE FOR 'SEWING MACHINE' PORTATWEO
The object of the invention is a case for a portable sewing machine with free arm. This case is of the type comprising two van- rates articulated to one another, so that in the deployed position the said leaves are situated in the extension of one another and form a work table whose height is approximately equal to the half-thickness of the dark case
A notch is provided in one of the leaves to receive the free arm of the sewing machine This notch is provided so that the plane of the shelf formed by the leaves is located at the level of the plate of the free arm , intended to receive the piece to be sewn.
Certain cases are known for portable sewing machines, comprising two leaves intended to be placed end to end to form a work table.
EMI1.2
In some of these cases the bottom is removable. Thus, to remove the machine from the case, the bottom of the latter is separated from the leaves. These are then separated from one another and placed end to end to form the work table.
These cases have a major drawback. Indeed, if after using the machine, the person who introduces it into the case does not take care to check that its bottom is properly fixed, it may happen that during transport, the bottom of the case is untaxed. and causes the sewing machine to fall o
In other known cases, the bottom is integral with one desvantaux and the second of these is articulated to the first at its upper part. Such a construction is impractical. Indeed, when you want to take the machine out of its case or reinsert it into the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
inside it, it is necessary to arrange the two leaves in the extension of one another vertically.
Now, as can easily be seen, such an arrangement of the case is very unstable and it can happen either that the case tilts, or that the upper leaf folds down, which can injure the person handling the case. machine and even damage it.
In addition, in the two known embodiments mentioned above, an additional panel is provided to hide in the closed position the notch provided in one of the leaves for the free arm of the machine.
When the leaves are arranged end to end to form the work shelf, this additional panel folds over the non-indented leaf to even out the upper surface of the shelf. Such an additional panel is therefore a complication for the construction of the case and a cause of rise in its cost price
The sewing machine case according to the invention differs from the known cases by the fact that its leaves are mounted to pivot on two opposite sides of the bottom of the case, the latter being formed of two articulated parts one by one. the other so as to be able to be folded and thus to allow the lower part of one of the leaves to be brought closer to the corresponding part of the other to form the shelf.
Preferably
the notch provided on one of the leaves to receive the free arm of the machine can be closed by a piece of corresponding shape articulated on the other leaf, when the case is closed. This part can advantageously be formed from two parts articulated to one another so as to be able to be retracted inside the corresponding leaf., in the open position of the case.
It is also advantageous that the said part is articulated on the leaf by a hinge allowing the part of the part which is integral with it to be folded inside the leaf against the upper wall of the latter. ci, the second part of said part, articulated to the first by a hinge, then coming to be placed substantially parallel to the plane of the leaf
A device could be provided to keep said part in the retracted position inside the corresponding leaf. This device can be constituted by at least one elastic blade fixed to the leaf and which locks said part in the retracted position by resting on the hinge connecting the two parts of said part to one another.
A closing device could also be provided at the free end of said part to block it against the leaf having the notch, in the closed position of the case.
The two leaves can be hinged to the bottom of the case by channi-res, a hinge connecting the two parts of the bottom to each other.
The case could also include a spacer in the general shape of a U. connecting the two opposite edges of the notch and intended on the one hand to make the corresponding leaf rigid and on the other hand to serve as a guide for the free arm. the machine.
Preferably, the part of each of the leaves adjacent to the bottom of the case has a stiffening rib. It is advantageous for each leaf to be provided internally with hooks intended to block the sewing machine against the bottom of the case in the closed position thereof.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of. the said briefcase.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the case, the latter being closed.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to the previous one, showing the case ajar.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig 3 is a perspective view of the open case showing the sewing machine.
Figo 4 shows a phase of the operations to be carried out to transform the case into a work table.
Fig 5 is a section through the case transformed into a work table, but not yet turned over.
Figo 6 is a perspective view of the work table obtained by transforming the case, and adapted around the free arm of the sewing machine.
This portable sewing machine case includes two leaves 1 and 2 ,, mounted to pivot on two opposite sides of a bottom 3.
These two leaves 1 and 2 divide the case into two parts of substantially equal shape. In fact, the case in closed position has a general parallelepipedal shape and the plane of separation of the two leaves merges with the larger one. median planes of the case - To allow the lower part of each of the leaves to be brought closer to the corresponding part of the other, the ballast bottom formed of two parts 4 and 5 articulated to each other (figo 4 and 5).
The leaves 1 and 2 are articulated to the bottom 3 by means of hinges 2 and the two parts 4 and 5 of the bottom 3 are likewise articulated to each other via a hinge 7 (fig. 5) The leaf 2 has a notch intended to receive the free arm 2 of the machine.
A U-shaped spacer 10 is provided to keep the leaf 2 sufficient rigidity despite the notch 8. This spacer 10 is also intended to serve as a guide for the free arm 9.
In the closed position (see fig. 1) the notch 8 is closed by a part 11 of corresponding force ;, which is articulated by a hinge 12 on the leaf 1 (figo 3) This part 11 is in two parts 13 and 14 articulated to one another by a hinge 15. This double articulation is provided to allow the part 11 to be retracted into the leaf 1 in the open position of the case. The hinge 12 allows the part 13 to be folded inside the leaf 1 against the upper wall 16 thereof. The second part 14 then comes to be placed substantially parallel to the plane of the leaf 1 (fig. 5).
A device is provided to hold the piece there; in the retracted position inside the leaf 1. This device consists of two elastic blades 17 fixed to the wall 16 of the leaf 1. These blades 17 have a bent shape (see fig. 3 and 5) which allows them to rest on the hinge 15, enclosing it on either side. Thus, the part 11 is effectively blocked in the retracted position without risk of flapping inside the leaf 1.
A closing device 18 is provided at the free end of the part 11. This closing device comprises an operating lever 19 and a claw 20. In the raised position of the lever 19 (FIG. 5), the claw 20 is moved away from the plane. of part 14 while in the folded position (freezes
1) the claw 20, resting against the inner wall of the leaf 2, maintains the part 11 in the notch 8.
Each leaf 1 and 2 has in its part close to the bottom a stiffening rib 21. In addition, the leaves 1 and 2 are internally provided with hooks 22 intended to block the sewing machine against the bottom of the case in position. closed thereof These hooks 22 are intended to grip the base 23 of the machine and thus prevent any movement of the sewing machine inside the case.
Stops 24 are provided on the sides of the leaves! and 2.
These stops are intended to come to rest on each of the parts 4 and .2. bottom 3, in the closed position of the case., to hold the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
completely flat bottom 1 and also to prevent, during a shock of a certain violence against the bottom, 2 ,, the latter bends inwards, even very slightly.
Buffers 25 (figo 5) are fixed under the base 1 to serve as feet for the case. Other buffers 26 are placed on the periphery of leaves 1 and 2 and serve as feet for the case transformed into a work shelf.
In addition to the closure device 18. two hook closures 27 are provided on the upper walls of the leaves to keep them tight against each other in the closed position of the case. A handle 28 is also provided. hinged to wall 16 of leaf 1.
A case as described above is used in the following way
When you want to do machine sewing work, you transport the case containing the machine on a table; the operating lever 19 is then raised so as to release the part 11 and the closing devices 27 are released. By then lifting the part 14, as indicated in FIG. 2, the two leaves can be moved apart! and 2 and fold them flat on the table (figo 3).
In this position, the hooks 22 have released the base of the machine and it is possible to remove the latter from the case. Part 11 is then folded back into leaf 1 as shown in fig. 4 and 5. The bottom 1 is then folded and the leaves 1 and 2 are joined end to end by their lower part.
The work table is thus formed; all you have to do is turn it over on the table, resting it on the buffers 26.
The free arm of the sewing machine can therefore be inserted into the notch 8 and the machine thus coupled to the tablet is ready for use.
It should be noted that the spacer 10 which is covered with felt 29 is intended to be introduced between the upper arm and the free arm of the machine when the case is closed. This spacer 10 is therefore useful for holding the sewing machine in place in its case.
In addition, for long-distance transport, it is advantageous to block the machine by means of screws on the bottom 3 of the case.
For this purpose, holes 30 are provided for the passage of the screws, in the corners of the bottom 1 (figo 4).
Various construction modifications could be made to this case. Thus, the part 11, for example, instead of being made permanently integral with the leaf 1, could be provided removable.
However)) it should be noted that, in the embodiment shown, the case forms a compact whole of simple and rigid construction. In addition, because all the different parts of the case are integral with each other. others, any loss of any of these is made impossible.
