PERFECTIONNEMENTS,AUX BOUCLES DESSERRABLES OU DISPOSITIFS D'ACCOUPLEMENT
SIMILAIRES POUR COURROIES; RUBANS etc.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Les figures 7 à 12 sont des vues semblables aux figures 1 à 6, respectivement d'une variante dans laquelle la boucle est conçue pour relier une extrémité d'une courroie à un point intermédiaire d'une autre courroie et peut être réglée en position le long de cette dernière courroie;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

IMPROVEMENTS, LOOSABLE LOOPS OR COUPLING DEVICES
SIMILAR FOR BELTS; RIBBONS etc.
This invention relates to releasable buckles and similar coupling devices for connecting a belt; a ribbon or the like to another element (for example another belt or the opposite end of the same belt. ) and relates to buckles of the type comprising a body which has a main anchor serving to connect the buckle to the element to be connected to the belt, a gripping ridge extending transversely to the direction of application of the load and a auxiliary anchorage parallel to the gripping edge and placed between the latter and the main anchorage In such a device, the strap (assuming the loop is placed horizontally)
is passed below the engagement ridge and the auxiliary anchoring ridge and returns above the auxiliary anchoring ridge and below the gripping ridge so that the end free and the adjacent part of the belt both bear against the engagement edge, with the free end engaged between the engagement edge and said adjacent part
The object of the invention is to provide a buckle of this type which is simple and inexpensive, does not risk slipping or shifting, does not include any part penetrating into the belt or liable to damage the latter and which, however , can be loosened almost instantly without requiring the action of any latch or pivoting, sliding or other closure.
According to one form of the invention, the surface of the gripping edge and / or of the auxiliary anchor around which the belt passes is pierced with a certain number of holes serving to increase the grip by friction by interrupting the surface. united without showing any protrusion exceeding it.
For example, the gripping edge can be formed at the edge of an opening in a plate, the holes being drilled in a trim plate folded around said edge.
The gripping ridge and the two side portions of the body connecting the gripping ridge to the main and auxiliary anchors are conveniently formed in one piece out of sheet metal. In another embodiment, the gripping edge, the main and auxiliary anchors and the two side parts which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The links are formed from a single piece outside the sheet.
In order for the buckle to have a good grip without resorting to grooves or teeth protruding into the belt or penetrating or piercing it, it is important that the detailed shape can satisfy certain conditions.
Thus, according to another form of the invention, the auxiliary anchorage is in fixed relation with the gripping edge and the main anchoring and it deviates from the gripping edge at a right angle on the line of. application of the load; it occupies in a longitudinal direction a position such that planes perpendicular to the direction of application of the load passing through the gripping edge and the auxiliary anchoring respectively are spaced apart by a distance which is practically no greater than the thickness of the belt so that the free end of the belt surrounds the gripping edge at an angle which is substantially not less than 90.
Under these conditions, a firm grip on the belt is obtained only by friction and without the use of any part which tends to penetrate or damage the belt, and the grip resists without slipping to considerable vibrations or when the belt is alternately tensioned and relaxed :, At the same time, if the buckle is tilted by hand in the desired direction to straighten the free end of the belt as well as the adjacent part of it and reduce the angle of wrapped around the grip edge, the grip can be instantly loosened and the strap released.
The invention can be carried out in different ways; four embodiments thereof will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a plan view of one form of loop; Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation of the buckle of Figure 1; FIGS. 3 and 4 are respectively views of the two blanks of which the loop of FIG. 1 is formed; Figure 5 is an elevation of the buckle with the straps in place and Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 showing the loosening of a belt;
Figures 7 to 12 are views similar to Figures 1 to 6, respectively of a variant in which the buckle is designed to connect one end of a belt to an intermediate point of another belt and can be adjusted in the right position. along this last belt;
FIGS. 13, 14, 15 and 16 are views similar to FIGS. 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively of a small loop suitable in principle for applications not involving great efforts, FIGS. 14 and 16 being on a slightly larger scale and Figures 17, 18, 19 and 20 are views similar to Figures 1, 2, 5, and 6, respectively, of a high strength buckle suitable for connecting large straps.
The loop shown in Figures 1 to 6 is formed from two sheet blanks A and B shown in Figures 3 and 4 respectively. The blank A which constitutes the main body of the loop has a pair of rectangular openings A1 and A2 leaving between them an intermediate bar A3 which will form the auxiliary anchor while the opposite side A4 of the opening A2 will constitute the gripping edge and the opposite side A5 of the opening A1 will constitute the main anchor. .
Beyond the edge A4, the plate is shaped in the shape of a roughly semi-circular chin A6, giving grip to the fingers to allow the loop to be manipulated and released as explained below,
The blank A shown flat in Figure 3, is stamped so
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to be shown in side elevation the shape shown in figure 2. The characteristics of this shape will be indicated below,
Blank B has an opening B1 having an overall I-shape, which can be viewed as a rectangular opening into which two protruding tabs B2 and B3 protrude. In addition, the blank is pierced with a series of holes B4.
The tongues B2 and B3 are bent at right angles to the plane of the blank B and the latter is then assembled to the blank A by passing the tabs through the openings A1 and A2 and folding them flat over the main anchor A5 and the gripping edge 9! * of body A, as seen in Figures 1 and 2.
Figures 5 and 6 show the buckle of Figures 1 to 4 serving to connect two straps C and D, which can obviously be the two ends of a single strap, such as a belt passing around the waist of his wearer. ger. The belt C is passed around the main anchor A5 through the opening A1 and its free end C1 is fixed to its adjacent part C2 by stitching or otherwise o The belt D is passed under the gripping edge A4, under the auxiliary anchor A3 through the opening A1 and returns under the auxiliary anchor through the opening A2 and below the gripping edge A4.
The free end D1 of the belt D is engaged between the part D2 of the belt and the engaging edge, so that belt tension applies the ex-. free end against the gripping edge ,,
It has been found that the detailed construction of the parts is of considerable importance in obtaining satisfactory results. Thus, in order to avoid damaging the belts, it is very desirable that the ridges around which they pass be as smooth as possible and be free of any protrusions which penetrate into the belt and could damage it. , especially in case of overload.
Thus, although the parts are manufactured economically by stamping, all the sharp edges are rounded and the faces of the main anchor and the gripping edge are formed by the curved and smooth faces of the tongues B3 and B4 of the counter-plate, At the same time, it has been found that if the surfaces are completely smooth, the loop tends, in some cases, to turn and go at an angle, a position in which the gripping edge and the anchors do not are not perpendicular to the belt ,, The holes B4 drilled in the gripping edge provide a frictional grip just sufficient to prevent this without offering any protuberance or protrusion liable to penetrate into the belt and thus be able to damage it. 'other words, the surface in contact with the belt is completely smooth,
although it is interrupted to increase the grip.
Accordingly, the construction described does not use any protrusions or teeth to provide grip when entering the belt and the dimensions and shapes of the parts are relied upon to provide grip. To this end, the free end of the belt B1 must surround the gripping edge at a sufficient angle which, in practice, cannot be less than 90. It can be seen in Figure 3 that the opening A2 is considerably narrower than the opening A1. Then, as shown in Fig. 2, the part of the body which is level with the window A2 is bent at a much sharper angle than the part level with the window A1.
Accordingly, in the view shown in Figure 1, window A2 appears as a narrow slit, no wider than the thickness of the belt, so that, as seen in Figure 5, the free end D1 of the belt surrounds the gripping edge at an angle of approximately 90.
It has been found that under these conditions a very firm grip can be obtained without damage to the belt and, in general, this grip is maintained even though the part D2 of the belt is alternately tensioned and relaxed. To release the grip, it suffices to lift the chin bar A6 as shown in figure 6, so as to reduce the winding angle of the parts D1 and D2 of the belt D around the grip edge, thus reducing the grip by friction and allowing the strap to slide through the buckle to the desired extent.
We also see that the backplate formed from the blank B, not
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
only provides rounded edges to the gripping edge and the main anchor, but still forms a pair of tension pieces B5 which directly support at least part of the tension between the belts C and D, thus resisting any tendency that this tension might otherwise have to flatten the main body Ao. As a result, the loop thus constructed is extremely strong and yet light. For example, a loop weighing only one-fifth of an ounce (about 5.5 gr.) Will withstand a tension of more than fifty pounds (about 22.5 kg.) While another larger loop weighing three-quarters of an ounce. (about 20 gr) will withstand a tension of 250 pounds (about 113 kg.).
The buckle shown in Figures 1 to 6 has been described as having its main anchor attached to a strap C, but it will be understood that it can be attached in many different ways to various kinds of parts as required. For example, it can be extended and provided with one or more holes to receive a bolt or screws to fix it to a rigid part, or it can be connected by a hinge to a plate provided with such holes or else it can be formed with a hook or a flange or any other form of fastener suited to the requirements o
In the arrangement shown in Figures 7 to 12, the buckle is similar to that of Figures 1 to 6, except that instead of being attached to the end of a belt C,
the main anchor is shaped to receive an intermediate part of a belt E so that the position of the buckle can be adjusted along this belt.
The loop is formed by a pair of blanks F and G which are similar to blanks A and B respectively and have similar parts, bearing similar references and which will not be described further. The blank F however extends further beyond the main anchor F5 and it has a punched tongue F7 and a narrow slot F8. Likewise, blank G is formed similarly to blank B with parts bearing corresponding references but in addition it has a protruding tongue G6 pierced with a second row of holes G7.
The blank F is bent and the blank G is assembled to it in a manner similar to that described with reference to Figures 1 to 6, but in addition the tab G6 is bent around the edge of the opening F9 left by the tab F7 as shown in figure 8. In addition, an additional plate H is folded around the tab F7 and fixed by means of a rivet H1.
The belt D is threaded through the openings F1 and F2 in a manner quite similar to that described with reference to Figures 1 to 6. The belt E is passed through the opening F9, above the tongue F7 and towards the down through the slot F8, as shown in figure 11. To release the strap D, simply tilt the buckle by lifting the chin bar F6 as seen in figure 12 while to adjust the position of the strap. loop along the belt E it is necessary to release the tension of the belt and then to move the loop along it.
The loop shown in Figures 13 to 15 is formed of J and K blanks and is intended in principle for applications requiring a very small and light loop capable of withstanding only a moderate load, as for example in the case of women's underwear suspenders In this case, the body of the loop is formed from the blank J which, as shown in figure 15, has a pair of openings Jl and J2 leaving between them an intermediate bar J3 which in this case, however, forms the main anchor. The opposite sides J4 and J5 of the openings Jlet J2 therefore respectively form the gripping edge and the auxiliary anchoring.
To this end, the left part of the blank, seen in figure 15µ is bent or folded as shown in figure 14 so that the edge J5 is above the opening J. The left edge of the blank, seen in figure 15, has an elongated notch J6 leaving at its ends a pair of protruding feet J7 which are bent downwards as seen in figure 14 so that they can bear against the side part of the body of the buckle to prevent the an-

Auxiliary gear can be pulled down by tensioning the belt until it comes into contact with the gripping edge and pinches and can damage the belt or sling.
The blank K forming the backplate is generally similar to blank B of Figure 4 and has a pair of tabs K2 and K3 which are bent upwardly through the opening J2 above the blank. J3 main anchor and J4 grip edge, respectively, of body J, as shown in Figure 14.
This blank is shown with a row of holes K6 along the main anchor and a row of holes K4 along the gripping edge.
A similar row of holes along the main anchor can be provided in any of the constructions described.
Figure 16 shows the loop of Figures 13 to 15 connecting a pair of belts C and D. The arrangement is exactly similar to that of Figures 5 and 6 and will not be described further.
The loop shown in Figures 17 to 20 is intended for heavy duty, for example for mooring equipment in ships or airplanes. It comprises a body made from a sheet metal blank M and having the general shape of a U whose base M1 constitutes the gripping edge of the loop while the two flanges M2 are folded in parallel planes. at right angles to the valued edge Each of these flanges has an opening M3 to receive a rod N which not only constitutes the main anchor, but also forms a pivot for a pair of arms P whose ends are connected by another bar Q forming the auxiliary anchoring. The ends of the N bar have a reduced diameter where they pass through the P arms and are riveted so that they are firmly attached to the P arms.
They are tightly fitted into the M3 reamed holes, in which they can turn with the P arms and the Qo bar The end parts of the Q bar have a reduced diameter and are also formed with flats so as to have a non-sectional cross section. -circular, and the holes in the arms P have a corresponding non-circular section so as to avoid any possibility of rotation of the bar Q which forms the auxiliary anchor, even if after a long use the riveting takes play .
The gripping edge M1 of the body is provided with a trim plate R which increases its effective thickness and a cover plate S which is curved so as to present a smooth curved surface for the gripping edge. These plates are fixed to the body M by SI rivets. The cover plate is provided with a series of holes S2 having the same purpose as the holes B4 of Figures 1 to 6, that is to say to reduce the possibility for the belts to go at an angle.
The body M may be provided with a suitable pull tab, for example a tab extending in one piece the body or a D-shaped rod or wire loop, but in the arrangement shown it is provided with a slot M4 to receive a short piece of T-strap whose ends are sewn together.
Figures 19 and 20 show the loop of Figures 17 and 18 connecting a pair of belts C and D. The arrangement is exactly the same as that of Figures 1 to 6 and will not be described again. note that in normal operation, relative movement between the auxiliary launch and the main anchor and the gripping edge is not relied on to tighten or release the loop. It is in fact preferred to give the flanges of the body M such a shape that they constitute stops limiting the amplitude of the movement of the auxiliary anchor towards the gripping edge so as to maintain a gap between these parts.
Thus, however great the overload applied to the belt may be, for example in the event of a fortuitous landing, the strap can never be completely cut by these parts coming into contact. At the same time, the auxiliary anchor can adjust itself up to

a certain point depending on the thickness of the belt so that the grip obtained does not depend excessively on the variation in thickness of the belt resulting from the substitution of one belt for another or from wear for example, stronger at one point on a belt than at another. The construction shown in Figures 17-20 is in fact suitable for very heavy loads and a loop weighing only a few ounces is able to withstand a tension of almost 2,000 pounds (approximately 900 kg).
CLAIMS.
1. - Buckle of the type specified, characterized in that the surface of the gripping edge and / or of the auxiliary anchor around which the belt passes has a number of holes serving to increase the grip by friction by interrupting the smooth surface without showing any protrusion beyond it.
