<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS TO LIQUID CONTAINERS, MORE PARTICULARLY TO
LIQUID FUEL CONTAINERS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES.
The present invention relates to improvements to liquid containers, more particularly to liquid fuel containers for motor vehicles (eg benzine, gas oil, lubricating oil, etc.)
The invention is aimed above all at the production of containers of this type, which are much simpler and more efficient than those applied hitherto, both from a construction point of view and as regards handling.
The present improvements consist essentially of the fact that the device for closing the container also and simultaneously constitutes the device for gripping and emptying it. The shutter member is preferably formed by a folding or tilting arm, articulated to the container, more particularly about a transverse axis, said arm being able to be immobilized on the container in a folded or tilted position such that it is. it closes the container and that it simultaneously constitutes a handle or a gripping stirrup, and in another position of inclination in which it releases the outlet of the container and simultaneously serves as a pouring device for the liquid coming out of the container. For this purpose, the arm is designed in the form of a tube or pouring funnel.
The device for connecting the free end of the tilting yoke to the container is most advantageously designed so as to serve as a closing device for the flow orifice of the tilting arm.
The container filling orifice is suitably made so as to also constitute the pouring orifice, and to be released from the shutter or gripping stirrup folded back into its emptying position. so that the contents of the receptacle can, during its flow, be continuously checked.
By means of these extremely simple arrangements, the various manipulations of the container thus improved are eminently rational.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In fact, a container produced according to the invention is particularly distinguished by its easy transport, its very simple and secure closing, and its practical operation during the flow of the liquid. These three conditions are fulfilled very easily and efficiently by the operation of a single element. For this purpose, the tilting arm or stirrup, articulated to the container, remains attached to it during the three aforementioned operations.
To use it, on the one hand, as a closing device, respectively for gripping, and, on the other hand, as a pouring or emptying device, it suffices to make the arm oscillate around its pivot, from one extreme position to the other. 'other, and to connect it optionally, in the closed position, to the container, with 1-aid of a simple connecting member.
The container and the tilting arm thus conditioned can be made so as to form an eminently aesthetic smooth assembly.
The filling tubing respectively of the flow of the container can be covered like a cap by the tilting arm serving as a closing or gripping stirrup.
It is also particularly advantageous for the filling orifice, respectively for the flow of the container, to be closed by the tilting arm, has a conically widening wall, on which, in the closed position of the container, a seal, preferably disposed on the inner wall of the hollow arm and constituted for example by a disc or a rubber ring resistant to oil.
By this arrangement, the advantage is obtained that the filling or discharge orifice, respectively, is closed in an absolutely uniform and sealed manner, thanks to the increase, from the inside to the outside of the deformation and of the pressure effect of the seal. At the same time, the conical edge ensures a smooth flow of the liquid during the emptying of the container, since it prevents the liquid, passing over said edge, deviating, by cohesion, on the wall of the container and, afterwards. the emptying of the container, drops drop by drop from its edges.
The seal and the connection device are very advantageously combined so that the pressure of the seal is obtained by a large lever arm ratio when the folding arm is connected to the container, and that the elastic pressure of the seal d The sealing acts in the direction of a more energetic tightening of the connection device.
For this purpose, the flow orifice comprises a protrusion in the form of a cam or a journal, arranged, in the closed position, on the opposite side of the arm, this protrusion cooperating, for the connection of the folding arm to the container, with a notch of the connecting device preferably simultaneously ensuring the closure of the flow orifice, said projection being suitably disposed slightly set back relative to the outer edge of the flow orifice. The presence of such a protrusion in the form of a cam or a trunnion increases the safety of the connection against any unwanted slackening, even under sudden shocks or tremors, and also gives the possibility of using it very advantageously as a stop. for the folded arm used as a filling funnel.
Still other advantages and characteristics of the subject of the present invention will emerge from the following description of some non-limiting exemplary embodiments, shown diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal section of a liquid container, for example a gasoline can, provided with a tilting arm serving as a gripping device, closing and discharge, said arm occupying its closed position of the container .
FIG. 2 is a partial side view of the same container with an articulated arm, the latter occupying its position for discharging or emptying the container.
FIG. 3 is an elevational view partially in section of a container having a slightly modified closure, gripping and emptying device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figure 4 is a plan view of the container according to Figure 3.
Figure 5 shows schematically this container during emptying.
FIG. 6 is a longitudinal section of the device for connecting the folding arm to the container.
Figure 7 is a cross section taken along line A-B of Figure 6.
Figures 8 and 9 are respectively a sectional view and a plan view of a special gasket.
According to these figures, the reservoir 1 has the upper side. a single tubular projection 2 with an opening 2 'simultaneously constituting the discharge and filling orifice. The upper edge of the tubing has a collar 3. Near the tubing 2 is articulated to the container, by means of a knot hinge arranged perpendicularly on the axis of the filling orifice, a folding arm or stirrup simultaneously forming the closing, gripping and pouring element.
For this purpose, said arm 2 has a substantially S-shaped longitudinal profile, and consists of a tubular element which, from its end 5 'near the hinge 4, towards its opposite end 5. ", gradually reduces in the shape of a funnel. In its closed position shown schematically in FIG. 1, the folding arm 5 covers, with its wide end 5 ', respectively its large opening 6, the tubing 2 with opening 2 ', its inner wall being applied, with the intervention of a seal 1, on the collar 3 of the filler pipe 2 and thus sealingly closing said pipe 2.
The other funnel-shaped end of the arm 2 is, in the closed position of the container, fixed to the container by means of a connection device. The latter consists of a wire or small stirrup, articulated in., 2 to the container 1, and provided with a cap 11 which can oscillate, around the branch 10 of the element 8. This cap is placed on the 'Or funnel-shaped arm opening serving as outlet 12.
In the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2, a notch 13. provided at the edge of the orifice 12, serves as a housing for the stirrup 10, when the container is closed.
Inside the folding arm 5 is arranged in a screen 14 which separates the chamber -closing the filling pipe 2, from the funnel-shaped portion of the arm. In Figures 1 and 3, we can still see an air discharge duct 15 extending along the upper wall of the receptacle to the interior of the filler pipe, respectively drain 2 and opening into it on the side opposite to the hinge 4. When the container is filled or emptied, the re-entry, respectively, the exit of air is therefore ensured.
The leaktight closing of the filler orifice 2 'is particularly favored by the large transmission ratio of the lever arm according to which the seal 1 is applied to the collar 3 of the filler pipe 2, when the arm .2 is fixed to the container using the stirrup 8. The container thus closed can very easily be carried using the arm or folding stirrup whose profile ensures very convenient handling.
To empty the container, the connector 8-11 is released and the arm- 5 is folded around the pivot ¯4 in its other extreme position. The receptacle 1 can then be tilted as shown in FIG. 2. In this position, the folding arm is used for the flow or emptying, its wide opening 6 then being below the collar 1 of the tubing. of ---- filling, respectively emptying 2 of the container 1 :, while the end .se reducing in the form of a funnel and having a longitudinal profile in the form of S of the arm and directed downwards like a spout.

re and then drained through the drain 12, whereby it is collected in a reservoir, bottle or other receptacle suitable for the intended use.
The cap 11 which covers the drain port 12, protects the interior of the drain funnel against dirt and the introduction of foreign bodies, which could otherwise mix with the liquid and be introduced with it into the tank or the other receptacle used The screen 14 constitutes an additional obstacle which opposes the above-mentioned soiling.
The embodiment according to Figures 3 to 7 differs essentially from that of Figures 1-2 by the following points:
The collar 3 of the filler pipe 2, constituting the orifice serving simultaneously for filling and emptying the container, has a conical shape.
In the position of Figure 3, corresponding to the closure of the container 1, the disc-shaped seal 1, integral with the arm and made for example of oil-resistant rubber, is applied under pressure to the conical collar 1 of the refill tubing

being closed off in a compo 'way
As shown in figure 5, when the liquid flows from the reservoir, it passes over the conical collar 3 so that it leaves the said collar at its inclined outer edge and flows in a light direction. rement inclined Xo From this arrangement, it follows that the tendency of the liquid to flow by adhesion on the wall of the container, and to fall subsequently drip after the complete emptying of the container is systematically opposed.

Figure 5 also shows schematically how the cam or the spout 16 of the funnel-shaped end 5 "can very advantageously be used as a fulcrum when emptying the container. On-, thus avoids both slippage and too deep penetration of the drain hole 12 respectively with respect to and into the tank to be filled.
The cap 11 simultaneously protects the inside of the funnel against the introduction of dust and foreign bodies. The sieve 14,
