<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Le procédé de 1:invention peut être appliqué à des matières de différentes sortes et, en dehors du refroidissement et du séchage, pour d'au- très traitements des matières. Ainsi on peut réaliser des traitements aus- si bien physiques que chimiques; Parmi les nombreuses applications on peut citer : le chauffage, le séchage, l'oxydation, le refroidissement, le bon poudrage, l'aération des produits minéraux, minerais, charbons, engrais, .sels, matières colorantes, graines oléagineuses, céréales en grains, céréa= les concassées;

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THE CONTINUOUS TREATMENT OF PELLET MATERIALS BY
GASES, ESPECIALLY FOR COOLING AND DRYING.
In the main patent? 490,549 filed August 5, 1949, the Applicant has proposed a process for the treatment with gas of granular materials, for example for cooling, drying salts, fertilizers and similar substances; In this process, the granular substances move, inside a container, on an intermediate baffle provided with openings for the passage of gases, are crossed by the gases used for the treatment and then leave the container by a opening arranged for example in the middle of the baffle. This process can be carried out in a particularly advantageous manner in vertical containers, in which the material to be treated enters the upper part of the container through a central opening.
Immediately below the central opening is a distributor disc which directs the flow of material towards the side walls of the container. There, the material falls on the baffle provided with openings for the passage of gases, for example a grid having the shape of a funnel, and below which enter the gases used for the treatment. A notable drawback presented by

The plaintiff has found that we get. better use of the gases employed for the treatment if the repair of the incoming material stream is effected not with the aid of a simple distributor disc, but if the material is directed almost against the side walls of the container The aid of a first baffle, in the shape of a cone or pyramid, provided with openings for the passage of gases. At the edges of this baffle the material falls on a baffle, located below, having the shape of a funnel and which is also provided with openings for the passage of gases.
In its middle, this second chicane has an opening through which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the treated substance flows. The gases used for the treatment enter through the lower face of the funnel and first pass through the layer of material moving on this last baffle to then pass through the layer of material moving on the upper d-shaped baffle. 'funnel.
In this way of proceeding, the gases employed for the treatment come into intimate contact with the material twice, thus constituting a kind of countercurrent process so that a particularly good use of the gases is obtained in terms of relates to their temperature as well as from the point of view of their compositions.
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, by way of non-limiting examples, different installations for carrying out the process of the invention,
In this drawing, Figures 1 and 3 are vertical sections of the treatment apparatus; Figure 4 is a horizontal section of the treatment apparatus.
In the drawing, we see a receptacle 1 (FIG. 1) of rectangular or circular section, into which is introduced, through an opening 2 made in the cover, the material to be treated. Inside the container 1, said material falls, first onto a first grid made up of bars or plates 3 arranged in the manner of scales. Through the interstices between two neighboring plates 3, the gases used for the treatment can pass upwards. The lower edge 4 of the conical grid is arranged so as to come relatively close to the side wall of the receptacle 1 At this point, the flow of material changes direction and falls on a baffle placed below and also provided with openings for the passage of gas.
This second baffle consists, for example, of plates 5 arranged in a funnel with slits between them for the passage of the gases used for the treatment. The lower baffle forces the material to pass through a discharge opening 6, where it leaves the container. Instead of bars or plates 3 or 5, it is possible to use sieves or perforated flat plates for the two shafts.
The gases used for the treatment are brought to the container through a side opening 7, below the lower baffle.
The gases first pass between the bars of the lower baffle and through the layer of material moving over it. The greater part of the gas then passes still between the plates 3 of the upper baffle while moving upwards. And then they go through, for the second time, a layer of matter moving downward. The gases thus used in an advantageous and intensive manner finally escape through an opening 6 of the container 1.
Below the cone-shaped baffle (3,4), concentric cylindrical rings 9 can be placed, between which the gases pass by moving upwards. The purpose of these cylindrical rings 9 is to ensure a regular thickness of the layer of material on the lower grid and a good distribution of the gases which pass through.
These concentric guiding rings arranged below the upper baffle can be given a rhythmic movement thanks to a stirring device. For this, for example, a vibrator 10 is used which is fixed to the upper edge of a guide ring 11 (figo 3). Such a vibrator can also be fixed to another place of the apparatus, for example to the wall of the container 1. To the guide ring 11 can be fixed by rods 12 one or more rings of the upper or lower baffle of such. so that these baffles are also drawn into a rhythmic movement, thus safely preventing blockages inside the receptacle 1.
When the container. 1 is made with a circular section (fig. 3), it is advantageous to make it arrive tangentially below
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
from the lower funnel baffle through an opening 13 (fig 4) the gases used for the treatment. In this way, a good distribution of the gases occurs without their kinetic energy being abnormally reduced.
When the container 1 is made with a rectangular cross section, the surfaces of the grids on which the material moves will not be in the shape of a cone but in the shape of a pyramid. The different plates 3 and 5 will then extend from one side wall of the apparatus to the opposite wall.
The process of the invention can be applied to materials of different kinds and, apart from cooling and drying, for further treatment of the materials. Thus it is possible to carry out both physical and chemical treatments; Among the many applications we can cite: heating, drying, oxidation, cooling, good powdering, aeration of mineral products, ores, coals, fertilizers, salts, coloring matters, oil seeds, cereals in grains , cerea = the crushed;
processing of fruits, vegetables, cut vegetables, cut potatoes, fruit malt in grains, shavings of wood, metal or artificial materials, calcination, roasting, lime concretion, plaster, cementa mineral products, fixing gas eg ammonia, nitrogen phosphates on calcium carbide, absorption operations eg gas desulphurization using granular desulphurization masses, gas removal carbonic acid using lime hydrate in grains, filtration and purification of gases using granular masses retaining dust or active substances.
