<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

HINGE MOUNTING DEVICE.
The invention relates to the mounting of piano-type hinges, in particular for pivoting cabinet doors.
In cabinets where the door is only visible, excluding any uprights or crosspieces, and where the doors or drawer fronts are juxtaposed, it is necessary to use hinge or hinge systems of special construction, to allow the simultaneous opening of two adjacent doors of said cabinet or of two contiguous cabinets, without the opening of one of the doors being able to interfere with the opening or closing of the other door.
The object of the present invention is to provide a hinge mounting device for such cabinet doors established either in metal or in wood, in which use is made of piano-type hinges, said mounting allowing angular displacement. at 90 from the door while maintaining the latter, during its rotation, on the side of the plane extending in the extension of the lateral outer wall of the cabinet.
Thanks to the hinge mounting device according to the invention, it is therefore possible to place, side by side, several cabinets provided with said doors or to place a cabinet in the corner of a room, in contact with two walls, without that the opening of a cabinet door cannot be obstructed by opening the door of the adjacent cabinet or by the corner wall of the wall or other element adjacent to the cabinet.
According to the invention, the piano-type hinge is provided in the bottom of a longitudinal cavity formed in the thickness of the door and opening on the inside face of the latter along its lateral edge, said hinge being fixed by one of its wings on the edge, bent at right angles, of a fitting engaged in said cavity and fixed to the interior face of the side wall of the cabinet, the other wing of said hinge being fixed to one of the interior walls of this cavity.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view, in horizontal section, showing two contiguous metal cabinets, the doors of which are closed and provided with the hinge assembly according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1, showing the doors of the adjoining cabinets in the open position, one of the doors being shown. in phantom lines in an intermediate open position and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing said cabinet with the door open, laterally contiguous to a wall.
As shown in the drawings, in the door 5 of the cabinet 6, of metal construction, there is provided a cavity 7, open towards the inside face of the door and formed by a sheet 8 covering the door, by the rim. frame 9 of the latter and by the thickness plate 10, which connects the inner panel 11 of said door to the cover sheet 8 to form a rigid box-like construction.
The cabinet 6 comprises two hollow side walls 12, also set up as a box, only one of which is shown in the drawings, said walls 12 being interconnected by partitions 13.
The door 5 is articulated around the pivot 14 of a piano-type hinge provided in the bottom of the cavity 7. One of the wings 15 of this hinge is fixed in any way, for example by spot welding, or by a process. analogous to the edge 16, suitably bent at right angles, of a fitting 17 fixed to the inner face 18 of the wall 12 of the cabinet.
The other wing 19 of the hinge is fixed to the frame ledge 9 by means of a thickness 20.
The angle formed between the frame rim 9 of the door and the outer panel of the latter, formed by the sheet 8, is rounded so that, during the angular displacement of the door 5 around the pivot 14, of which the position is suitably determined, the outer face of the sheet 8, during the rotation of the door, remains below the line XX which corresponds to the plane passing after the outer face 21 of the side wall 12 of the cabinet.
In FIG. 1, a second cabinet 6a has been shown, contiguous to the cabinet 6, the pore 5a of which is arranged symmetrically with respect to the door 5. These two contiguous cabinets are shown in FIG. 2 with doors 5 and 5a, in their open position. It is easy to see from this figure that the opening of the door 5 does not in any way interfere with the opening of the door 5a, even during the rotational movement of one of the doors, as it appears from the intermediate opening position of the door 5, shown in phantom lines in this figure 2.
Likewise, the cabinet can be placed in a corner or in a clearance, without it being necessary to reserve, between the wall and the cabinet, a space compensating for the thickness of the door. Figure 3 shows such an arrangement of. the cabinet 6, contiguous to a wall 22, the door 5 of which can be opened without being hampered by said wall.
The invention which has been described and illustrated in its application to a metal cabinet, can also be applied, with all its advantages, in wooden furniture constructions, with certain assembly arrangements.
On the other hand, the elements affecting the assembly of the hinge, including a casing forming the cavity 7, comprising the rounding of the angle, could constitute an independent element, made of metal, intended to connect a door to the door. side wall of a cabinet, this door and this side wall both being made of wood or any other suitable material.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the shape and the arrangement of the elements as described and illustrated in the drawings, but that numerous constructive modifications can be therein.
