<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 1 - une vue en élévation avec coupe d'une forme d'exécu- tion ;
Fig. 2 - une vue en perspective d'une installation conforme à l'invention;

PROCESS AND DEVICES FOR MANUFACTURING WICK OR WIRE FROM
GLASS FIBERS OR OTHER THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of wicks or threads made of staple fibers of glass or other thermoplastic materials.
It is known to deposit such staple fibers, which can be obtained by stretching the molten material by means of gas streams, on a receiving member, this deposition taking place in the form of a web which is then subjected to a stretching to turn it into a wick.
According to a known device, this receiving member is constituted by a body of revolution; the fibers are received on the surface of this body where they form a web which is subjected to traction to stretch it into a wick.
In practice, the traction on the veil is exerted by the spool on which the lamb's lettuce is wound.
It is advantageous, more particularly in the case where it is desired to obtain fine titer rovings, of increasing the cohesion of this roving formed from staple fibers. It has already been proposed to achieve this cohesion by giving the wick a twist before it is wound on the spool, which facilitates the unwinding of the wick and gives it greater solidity for the subsequent spinning operations. In this case, the twist is given to the wick by rotating the body of revolution on which the fibers are deposited in the form of a web, the traction for drawing being, in the usual way, carried out by the means used for winding the wick.
The subject of the invention is a new method for obtaining the twist of the wick before it is wound on the winding member.
This process consists in carrying out the stretching and winding operations by independent means and using, to carry out the winding, a rotating bowl whose peripheral speed is greater than the speed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the wick when it leaves the means ensuring its stretching. This difference in speeds conditions the value of the torsion.
This process makes it possible to easily adjust the torsion by acting on the speed of the bowl independently of the drawing speed. In particular, the drawing speed can be kept constant and the speed of rotation of the bowl can be acted upon to obtain a wide range of twists. It will be noted in this connection that, for elementary fibers of the same diameter and of the same length , the greater the twist, the more consistent and therefore stronger the twisted bit.
The method according to the invention makes it possible to replace a bowl without causing any disturbance in the drawing. It follows that the title of the wick does not undergo any variation.
The wicks obtained according to the invention are, on the other hand, relatively little hairy because the twist is given to a wick containing fibers that are already parallelized.
In the method according to the invention, the winding of the wick on the bowl occurs only under the action of centrifugal force. For a given speed of rotation, this winding is therefore less tight than with a coil effecting both traction on the wick and its winding.
Owing to this lower degree of tightening, the unwinding of the bit is carried out more easily, in particular in the case of fine title bits. In this regard, it should be noted that the finer the wick, the weaker the action of the centrifugal force exerted on it. Consequently the tightening of the winding is all the less important as the wick is thinner. The opposite effect occurs in the case of a winding carried out by means of a coil exerting at the same time the traction intended for the drawing since, in this case, this traction must be all the stronger - all things otherwise equal - that the bit to be obtained must be thinner.
The winding is then with very tight turns and the wick, not very solid because of its delicacy, is subject to breaks at the time of unwinding.
Thanks to the invention, it is also possible to obtain high torsion values which can make it unnecessary to take up the wicks with a view to submitting them again to twisting operations, allowing a finished yarn to be produced. .
The stretching of the wick can be carried out by any suitable means. One can for example use two rollers between which passes the wick at the outlet of the member for receiving the fibers. It is also possible to use a perforated rotating drum on which the wick is applied temporarily by means of a depression produced in the lower part of said drum and affecting only one sector of this drum.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment, the stretching is obtained, in accordance with the invention, by an ejector through which the wick passes, the drive of this wick, the latter being caused, at appropriate speed, by means of gas streams passing through the wick. the ejector.
The wick can be guided towards the inside of the bowl by a guide member distinct from the stretching member, in particular in the case where the wick undergoes a change of direction between the outlet of the stretching member and its inlet. in the bowl. This guidance can also be carried out by the stretching member itself, when the latter consists of an ejector.
The crimping of the wick for its winding on the rotating bowl can be carried out either by a reciprocating movement of the bowl, along its axis, or by a reciprocating movement communicated to the wick by a suitable means, for example by the guide member, or by a combination of these movements.
Two embodiments of devices specific to the implementation of the method according to the invention have been described below, simply by way of examples. In this description, reference is made to the accompanying drawings which show:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 1 - an elevational view in section of an embodiment;
Fig. 2 - a perspective view of an installation according to the invention;
As shown, the glass streams 1 flow from the die orifices 2 provided in the lower part of a container 3 filled with molten glass. These glass nets entrained by gas currents, are drawn into fine fibers which pass between skirts 4. These fibers then fall into the funnel 5, the wall of which is formed by elements 6 which are not contiguous with each other.
The excess air passes between the elements 6 in a chamber 7 surrounding the funnel and in communication with a suction duct 8.
The staple fibers thus deposited on the internal wall of the funnel form a veil which exits at 9 from the tip of said funnel and is subjected to the traction exerted by the ejector 10 in communication by the pipe 11 with a source of a gaseous fluid under pressure.
This ejector subjects the web of fibers to a drawing action parallelizing the fibers and forming the wick. This wick exits at 12 from the tube 15 extending the ejector and penetrates inside the bowl 13. This bowl is driven in a rotational movement around its axis 14. Due to the centrifugal force at which it is. when subjected, the wick is applied to the internal wall of the bowl, forming a coil, the crimping necessary for this coil being obtained by a vertical back and forth movement of the ejector.
In the installation shown in fig. 2, the same organs as those of FIG. 1 have the same references. This installation comprises a single fiber production system with a funnel and a drawing ejector. It comprises three bowls 13-13a-13b whose motors 16-16a-16b are mounted on a common support 17. The axes of these bowls are offset with respect to the common axis of the support, to the funnel 5 and to the 'ejector 10. To ensure the change of direction of the wick after the ejector 10 and to bring it in the axis of each of the bowls 13, the tube 15 is bent. In each of the bowls is respectively provided an ejector 18-18a-18b which directs the wick and which is driven in a back and forth movement to achieve the crimping of the coil.
In the position shown in fig. 2, the bowl 13 is being filled, that is to say that it receives the winding of the wick formed at the outlet of the funnel 5 by the ejector 10 and is guided by the ejector 18.
The bowls 13a and 13b are being unwound. This unwinding is carried out, in the example shown, by means of ejectors 19-19a-19b driven by a reciprocating movement parallel respectively to the axis of the coils 20-20a-20b and which ensure the crimping of the wick on said coils and, optionally, an additional twist.
Thanks to this device, it suffices that the bowl 13a is empty when the bowl 13 is full and consequently, as two unwinding stations are used for one winding station, the unwinding speed can be half. winding speed on the bowl.
The bowl change can be effected by rotating the ejector 10. The bowl 13 being filled, the tube 15 is brought in line with the ejector 18a of the bowl 13a. The wick of the bowl 13 is taken by its end and introduced into the ejector 19 in order to unwind the bowl and wind the wick on the spool 20.
