<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

APPARATUS FOR FORMING FIBER RIBBONS OR STRAPS.
An improved apparatus for manufacturing a fibrous material is disclosed. It relates more particularly to a method of manufacturing ribbons of fibrous material from glass and other thermoplastic or hardenable substances, by stretching this material into fibers while it is in the plastic state, by collecting the fibers in a hollow assembly on a rotating support and removing this assembly from the support in the direction of the axis of rotation of the support. As the fiber assembly passes the end of the backing, it is elongated and stretched into a ribbon of intermingled fibers.
The main object of this invention is to provide a means for continuously stretching molten glass to form a continuous glass fiber, winding the fiber around a rotating support and advancing the glass. All fibers lengthwise of the carrier past one end of the carrier at a defined controllable speed.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device for advancing the assembly of fibers in the direction of the length of the support which comprises only rotating elements arranged in a compact manner, thereby allowing operation at large. device speed.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide means for advancing the set of fibers in the direction of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
length of the rotating support which are arranged so that the surface of the element on which the bundle of fibers is collected closely resembles a real cylinder. This ensures that the tension which is applied to the glass strands being drawn remains substantially uniform as the rotating support rotates.
In general, the invention provides a substantially tubular rotating support, intended to receive an assembly of fibers, comprising openings spaced apart in its cylindrical wall, and an element located inside the tubular support bearing on its outer surface. a helical groove exposed through the openings in the support, to allow parts of the set of fibers on the support to come into contact with the helical groove. The construction is such that the relative rotation of the support with respect to the element causes the fibers to protrude from one end of the support.
Yet another feature of this invention is to control the speed with which the fibers advance until they pass one end of the support, imparting to the member provided with a helical groove a rotary motion at a speed selected from within. the direction of rotation of the outer element. In this way, the speed of advance of the fibers beyond one end of the support can be made relatively slow without limiting the speed of rotation of the support. As a result, the carrier can be driven at very high rotational speeds to draw threads of thermoplastic materials into fibers.
The foregoing objects, as well as others, will become more apparent in the course of this description, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a schematic view of a suitable apparatus for carrying out the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken substantially along line 2-2 of fig.l;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1 and
Fig. 4 is a schematic view of a slightly modified form of construction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It will be understood as this description progresses that the present invention can be advantageously used for the treatment of natural fibers, such as cotton, silk and wool, or with the various cellulosic compounds commonly known as rayon. By way of example, however, the invention is shown in its application to the treatment of fine filaments of thermoplastic materials such as glass.
In short, a mass of thermoplastic material such as glass is melted and divided into a plurality of fine threads. The nets are stretched to form filaments or fibers by the application to the fibers of a tensile or drawing force and pneumatic or mechanical means can be provided for this purpose. Regardless of the particular stretching means employed the fibers are collected on a rotating cage-shaped member and are subsequently withdrawn at one end of the member. The present invention provides an improved apparatus for carrying out this and similar methods.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the fibers are wound on a rotating cage and the successive turns of the fibers advance in the direction of the length of the cage under the action of the rotation of this cage relative to an element located at the inside it. The element is provided with a helical groove on its exterior surface and the wall of the cage is provided with slits to allow parts of the fiber turns to rest in the groove. As a result, the rotation of the cage relative to the element provided with a helical groove imparts a movement to the set of fibers in the general direction of the axis of rotation of the cage and at a speed which depends on the relative speed of rotation between the cage and the element.
As the fibers escape from the end of the cage, they are ... drawn, approaching each other and moving away along the axis of the cage, to form a ribbon, or by a blower or by a rotating winder. In mild cases, relative rotation can be maintained between the tape and the cage so that the fibers are twisted. This is especially desirable when winding the fibers on a spool because the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The fibers are held in a compact ribbon during the winding operation and thus ensure that the unwinding of the ribbon will subsequently take place smoothly.
In the present example the element provided with a helical groove rotates independently of the outer cage in order to control the speed of advance of the fibers in the direction of the length of the cage. This arrangement also allows the cage to rotate at high speed without setting any limitation on the minimum fiber advancement speed and as a result the cage can be employed to stretch thermoplastic threads to no limit. any speed found desirable.
Referring in more detail to the drawings, 10 indicates a vessel or crucible for containing a supply of molten glass. A die 11 is suitably supported at the base of the container in communication with the supply of molten glass and comprises a number of protuberances pierced with relatively small holes through which the glass flows as threads 12.
The vessel or crucible 10 and the die 11 shown schematically in the drawing may be of any suitable construction and no description is necessary thereof as to the mechanical details of this construction except as regards the construction. combination with the improved fiber handling mechanism which will be described hereinafter. Regardless of the particular construction of the vessel or crucible 10 and of the die 11, the arrangement is such that molten glass flows in the form of a stream from each of the orifices of the die under the action of means of. appropriate stretching.
In the present example, the nets are mechanically stretched to form continuous fibers by means of a rotating cage 13 supported directly below the die 11 in a position allowing the fibers to be wound around this cage.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be appreciated that the cage is rotatably supported by a shaft 14, part of which is journaled at one end at axially spaced points, in bearings 15 carried by a shaft. suitable support 16. The support 16 is arranged so that the portion of the shaft 14 extending beyond the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
support 16 is located correctly below the die 11 and. the cage 13 is supported so as to be able to rotate on this portion of the shaft 14, by bearing surfaces 17 and 18.
In detail, the cage 13 is closed at one end by a part of the hub 19 integral with it and it is closed at the opposite end by a removable head 20. The hub 19 is provided with a central recess 21 s. 'opening inwards, and intended to receive the bearing surface 17 of the free end of the shaft 14. The head 20 is provided with an axially aligned recess 22 intended to receive the bearing surface 18 existing on the shaft 14. Head 20 is releasably attached to the adjacent end of cage 13 by means of fasteners 23 and as a result the cage is effectively supported by shaft 14 in a manner. allowing it to rotate.
The head 20 has an axial bore freely accommodating the shaft 14 and is provided with a groove 24 located between its ends and intended to receive an ordinary drive belt 26 driven by a source of motive force of a type. suitable such as, an electric motor 27. In the present example, the sage 13 is driven at a suitable speed to stretch the nets 12 and form continuous fibers and the latter are wound on the outer surface of the cage to form a cylindrical assembly of fiber turns. The main features of the invention are also applicable in the case where the nets are drawn by a gas jet and where the resulting fibers are collected on the cage 13.
As the fibers collect or are coiled around the outer surface of the cage 13 and form a hollow fibrous mass, this mass is displaced lengthwise of the cage towards the hub 19, is drawn from the end of the cage located on the side of the hub and stretched to form a ribbon. In accordance with the present invention, all of the fibers are moved mechanically in the direction of the length of the cage by a cylindrical element 31 wedged on the axis 14 inside the cage 13. The outside diameter of the cage 13. element 31 is slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the cage 13 and helical grooves 32 are provided on the surface
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
external element 31.
The helical grooves 32 are multiple via threads and are exposed by a number of axially elongated and normally spaced apart slits 33 in the wall of the cage. The slits 33 are in a relative position such that the bars 34 formed by the parts of the wall of the cage located between the slits are of a width sufficient to allow the fibers to be widely carried.
At the same time, the spacing between adjacent bars or, in other words, the width of the slits 33 is such that the portions of the fiber mass extending between the bars rest in the helical grooves 32 provided on the bar. element 31 as shown in Fig.3.
The rotation of the cage 13 relative to the element 31 advances the set of fibers in the direction of the axis of rotation of the cage towards the hub 19 and finally releases the fibers out of the end of the cage. the cage, located on the side of the hub. This action is facilitated by the fact that the outer surface of the cage gradually decreases in diameter inward from the head 20 to the hub 19 at an angle of about 3 to 1, depending on the type of fibers and the particular material we are dealing with.
In the apparatus as heretofore described, the fiber assembly on the cage moves towards the end at a speed dependent on the pitch of the grooves 32 and the speed of rotation of the cage relative to the element 31. To remain within practical limits of advance, one would be led either to limit the speed of drawing of the fibers, which is not desirable, or to use a very small pitch for the grooves 32 , which has not been recognized as possible in practice. These difficulties are overcome, in accordance with the present invention, by imparting a rotational movement to the advancing element 31, in the direction of rotation of the cage 13.
The element 31 is driven in rotation independently of the cage 13 by means of a drive pulley 36 fixed on the shaft 14 between the head 20 and the support 16. The pulley 36 operatively connects Marble 14 by means of a belt 37 to a suitable source of power represented by a usual shifting mechanism 38. In the present case, where
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the cage 13 is rotated at very high speed to stretch the threads 12 at an efficient rate, the element 31 rotates in the same direction as the cage but at a speed sufficiently lower than the speed of rotation of the cage to obtain the desired speed of removal of fibers from the end of the cage.
As the fibers protrude from the end of the cage, they are pulled axially outward, and toward each other to form a ribbon 41. As shown in Fig. 1, the set of fiber from the cage is removed by winding tape 41 on a winder 42 supported in any suitable manner so as to rotate at the desired winding speed. A suitable distribution roll 43 is installed between the cage 13 and the winder to distribute the tape along the spool.
It should be noted in connection with the foregoing that the rotation of the cage 13 relative to the spool twists the ribbon of fibers and in fact produces a yarn. Although this twist is wrong for continuous and unbroken fibers of the tape, it is very advantageous because it tends to keep the fibers together in the tape during the winding operation, and facilitates by this means a subsequent unwinding of the tape while maintaining its cohesion.
The set of fibers protruding 1'.extreme of the cage can also be removed by a blower designated in fig.4 by 46.
The blower has a circular central passage or eye 47 through which the ribbon of fibers passes and is provided with an annular gas discharge orifice surrounding the passage 47, in order to direct an annular jet of gas in the direction of the flow. length of the tape and on the tape to stretch the fiber mass. This blower can be used independently or in combination with a winder of the type shown at 42 in fig.l. In cases where the blower 46 is applied in combination with a winder 43, inaction of the blower relieves the tension on the tape as it winds on the winder. This construction is advantageous because it provides a relatively loose coil which lends itself more readily to the subsequent unwinding operation.
In addition, by applying
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In the blower, the tape may be placed on a conveyor or in a pot or other container in the event that such conditioning of the fibers is deemed preferable.
In most cases it is desirable to impregnate the tape or treat it with a suitable binder and lubricant before winding it onto the winder 42. This can be accomplished, with the construction shown in FIG. 4, taking advantage of the blower 46 to apply the desired product to the tape. In the absence of the blower, a spray head may be placed adjacent to the cage 13 to direct the treatment product onto the fibers as they wind up on the. cage or as the fiber assembly is removed from the end of the cage and stretched into a ribbon.
It is also possible to pass the fibers over a pad as they move towards the cage and thereby apply the binder and lubricant to the fibers before they are wound on the cage.
We can) make various modifications while remaining within the spirit of the invention.
