<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvements relating to lighters.
The present invention relates to cigar lighters of the type using a housing containing the fuel and in which a wick protrudes. These cigarette lighters are usually provided with a filling of absorbent material, such as cotton, by which the liquid from the lighter is retained and conveyed to the wick. In lighters of the above type, it is necessary to have access to the interior of the lighter housing to refuel it and it is also sometimes necessary to remove the absorbent lining if the wick comes out, of the wick holder tube or if a new wick has to be inserted.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a lighter housing construction mode which can be easily manipulated to gain access to the interior of the fuel tank to meet any of the purposes. above, without requiring any tools or instruments @

special products and which still make it possible to obtain a sufficient seal against the evaporation of the lighter fluid when the housing is closed.
In a more particular aspect, the invention relates to a method of constructing a housing, as mentioned above, in which the fuel tank closing device is combined with the stone holder tube such that the latter serves as a support to the closure device and that one can have access to the stone holder tube without having to move said closure device.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention are in part obvious and in part set forth in the following description which is made with reference to the accompanying drawing and relates to certain preferred embodiments of lighter housings which may be used. to operate in accordance with the invention. However, it is understood that these are given only as an indication and not as a limitation of the most general principles of the invention.
In the drawing: FIG. 1 is a side view (some parts being cut away) of a lighter comprising a housing constructed to operate in accordance with the invention, the housing closing device being shown in the sealed position of the fuel tank; fig. 2 is a view similar to the lower part of FIG. 1, but showing the closing device in position where it unmasks the fuel tank; fig. 5 is a plan view from below of the parts as they appear in FIG. 2; fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to the lower part of FIG. 1 and representing a somewhat modified construction method.
The invention is described as applying to a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Cigar lighter comprising a fuel box 1, of transverse cross-section of generally oval shape, the fuel tank provided inside the box being filled with absorbent material 2. An estoquiau 3, a damper 4 and a carrier tube. wick 5 are shown as being mounted on the upper part of the housing, the wick-holder tube surrounding the upper end of a wick 6 which descends to the absorbent material 2, but it is believed to be It is unnecessary to describe the above parts of the lighter in detail, as they can be assumed to be of any suitable or known construction, allowing ignition of the upper end of the wick 6.
The Applicant prefers to use a stone-carrying tube 7 which extends downwards through the central part of the fuel tank and contains a pressure spring 8. The latter can be adjusted by means of a screw 9 which locks into place. engages in a threaded sleeve read fixed to the lower end of the stone holder tube 7. In the embodiment shown, a spacer 11 extends between the stone holder tube 7 and the lower end of a stone holder. housing 12 which receives the stem of the estoquiau 5.
In accordance with the present invention, the fuel box 1 is provided with a loading opening which is normally covered and sealed off by a closure plate 13, the latter being applied in the sealed closed position against the part. of the box which surrounds the loading opening, -but the closure plate is mounted in such a way that it can be removed by the user out of its sealed closed position shown in FIG. 1 and turned towards the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which it largely unmasks the interior of the housing 1, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
allows easy access.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the lower edge 14 of the housing 1, which surrounds the loading opening, is bevelled, as shown, to form a sharp edge and the closure plate 13. is provided with a sealing washer 15 of neoprene or similar elastic material; this washer is surrounded by the peripheral rim 16 of the closure plate and it is applied in close contact against the edge 14 of the housing 1.
A has shown the closure plate 13 as being provided with a central internal hub 17 which surrounds the stone holder tube described above. A compression spring 18, housed inside this hub, bears at its lower end against an annular rim '19 provided on the sleeve 10 and at its upper part against a sealing washer 20, in neoprene or similar material, this washer 20 in turn bearing against the upper end wall of the hub 17. This method of construction allows the sliding and rotating mounting of the closure plate on the stone holder tube (the sealing washer 20 ensuring the tightness of the gasket) and limits the stroke from which it is possible to remove the closing plate from the fuel box.
Thus, in the position shown in FIG. 1, the spring 18 resiliently applies the closure plate 13 in the sealed closed position against the housing 1, but the user can grip the closure plate between his fingers and move it externally out of its position of. sealing against the opposing pressure of the spring 18, after which it can turn the closure plate to the transverse position with respect to the housing, a position which is shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Then, the user can release the closing plate which is immobilized in the open position thanks to the spring 18. In this position, the fuel tank located in the housing 1 is largely unmasked, which simplifies the operation. fuel tank filling operation and makes it easier for the user to see if the correct amount of fuel has been added and absorbed by the absorbent material in the different areas of the fuel tank. In addition, this largely unmasked open position greatly facilitates the extraction of the absorbent material from the fuel tank and the proper relining of the tank with such material, and, if necessary, the adjustment or replacement of the wick. .
To return the closure plate to the tightly closed position, simply turn it back until it is in line with the housing 1 and then release it until the spring 18 applies the two parts in sealed contact. Access to the stone holder tube 7 for replacing a stone can take place at any time by removing the screw 9 without having to move the closure plate.
In fig. 4, the Applicant has shown a somewhat modified mode of construction in which the sleeve 10a of the stone holder tube is provided with an annular rim 19a spaced internally from the lower wall of the housing so as to leave an annular space between this rim and the adjusting screw 9a of the stone, space surrounded by the u-hub 17a and in which a certain number of spare stones can be kept in reserve 21. Of course, the hub 17a, the spring 18a and the washer in neoprene 20a of FIG. 4, as well as the parts devoid of reference figures, which are therein, fulfill the same role as the parts of figs. 1 to 3 with corresponding references

laying.
Although the invention has been described as being applied to cases of lighters of the particular construction methods described above, it is understood that these are given only as an indication and not as a limitation and that various modifications can be made without thereby departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
