<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Improvements to torch mouthpieces".
In cutting or welding torches using a combustible gas and an oxidizing gas, one of which is at an insufficient pressure to obtain the desired flow rate, it is necessary to suck the latter by means of the other gas.
The injector-mixer device used for this purpose sucks in one of the gases, in spite of its low pressure ensures a sufficient flow rate and mixes the two combustible and oxidizing gases.
This device is characterized in principle by the arrival in a mixing chamber of section S of a jet of engine gas flowing through a suitably directed pipe.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
with respect to the chamber, of a section s chosen with respect to S to obtain the desired suction effect.
It is also desirable for the torches to be fitted with one or more devices for stopping backfire.
Certain embodiments in which the mixture of fuel and oxidant gases is carried out in the nozzle of the torch itself are known.
In general, it is the combustible gas which is supplied at low pressure and the oxidizing gas which is used as the motive fluid. Now, the dimensions of the nozzle limit the possibility of suitably sizing the conventional injector-mixer so that the quantity of working fluid necessary to suck a certain quantity of fuel gas is very high and the proportions of the two gases in the mixture are not not those that require good combustion.
Using several injector mixers instead of just one would not solve the problem.
The present invention consists in the first place in employing only a single injector-mixer built in the same nozzle and capable of ensuring the distribution of a sufficient quantity of mixture and in such a way that the proportion of the two gases in this mixture or precisely that which requires good combustion. The need to avoid any flashback also makes it necessary to bring the combustible gas into the suction chamber only by means of channels having a minimum length of 8.5 mm and whose diameter is less than 0 , 85 mm.
The present invention consists, secondly, in distributing the combustible gas in a circular chamber by means of a certain number of channels so as to provide effective protection against flashback while at the same time.

greatly reducing the pressure drop in the fuel gas circuit upstream of the injector-mixer. This reduction in pressure drops increases the efficiency of the injector-mixer.
The injector-mixer is formed by a duct of section s opening into a ring of well-defined dimensions bringing the fuel gas and this just in front of a groove of rectangular, or square, or circular section S.
The section S and the dimensions of the crown, relative to the section, are chosen such that the desired suction effect is obtained under the conditions indicated above.
Nozzles of the type described operate either with low pressure or high pressure fuel gas: in the latter case, the injector-mixer only fulfills the role of mixer; the nozzle retaining its protective properties against flashbacks.
Numerous embodiments, which may vary according to the type of torch, its use and its output, are possible without departing either from the scope or the scope of the present i nventi on.
One embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example, is shown in the accompanying drawing and shows a section of the spout.
The cutting torch nozzle, represented by FIG. 1, consists of the casing 1 and the body 2, these two parts are assembled by the weld line 3 covering the entire periphery of the nozzle. Optionally, the assembly of the two constituent parts of the spout could be carried out by threading or by any other known and usual process.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The torch head 4 comprises a frustoconical housing into which open: the inlet of cutting oxygen 5, the inlet of heating oxygen 6 and the inlet of combustible gas 7. These inlets are arranged in such a way. that they are separated in an absolutely sealed manner by the bevelled surfaces 8, 9 and 10 cut in the spout. The cutting oxygen, emerging through conduit 5, at the top of the nozzle, flows through central conduit 11 pierced in the body of the latter. The heating oxygen, intended to suck the fuel gas and to be mixed with the latter arrives at 6 and opens into a circular chamber 12 formed between the spout and the frustoconical housing. A channel 13 is drilled in the body 2 of the spout, it is followed by a channel 16 which opens into an annular chamber 17.
This annular chamber 17 receives on its periphery various channels 14 connected on the other hand to the annular chamber 15. These channels 14 which bring the combustible gas into the circular chamber 17 have a maximum diameter equal to 0.85 mm. and a minimum length of 8.5 mm. The jet of fuel gas exiting channel 16 enters a groove 18, which faces channel 16, and sucks in the fuel gas distributed by annular chamber 17.
The groove 18 which intervenes by its shape and its dimensions in the suction process furthermore ensures the intimate mixing of the two oxidizing and combustible gases. lower part, the groove 18 opens into the At its lower part, the groove 18 opens into the chamber 19 formed between the body 2 of the spout and its casing 1; the mixed gases flow towards the end of the nozzle through the annular space 20 extending from the chamber 19.
