<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Graduating machine
The present invention relates to a graduating machine of very simple construction and of small size, which makes it possible to draw on cylindrical or conical parts graduations according to any type of division desired and in lines of any desired relative lengths.
According to the invention, this graduating machine comprises a rotary workpiece holder intended to receive the workpiece to be graduated, a tool-holder slide guided so that the tip of the engraving tool moves in a plane passing through the axis of rotation of the workpiece holder, and means for adjusting according to the size of the workpiece the distance separating said axis from the tip of the tool, to impart to the workpiece holder an intermittent rotational movement, to determine the amplitude of each movement of the workpiece holder according to the type of division desired, to give the tool slide a reciprocating movement, and to limit the amplitude of each movement

the slide according to the desired length for each line drawn by the tool on the part.
In addition, the guide of the tool-holder slide is preferably tiltable about an axis transverse to the axis of rotation of the workpiece holder, to allow adaptation to the taper of the workpiece, in the case of of a conical workpiece, the angle made with this axis by the tool path.
In one embodiment of the machine, the workpiece holder and the tool holder are actuated by means of separate controls, by both hands of the operator. In another embodiment, a single control, hand or motor, actuates the tool holder and the workpiece holder alternately.
In order for the invention to be fully understood, it will be described below with reference to the appended drawing which shows embodiments thereof by way of example and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the whole of the graduating machine, showing it three-quarters, in elevation,
Fig. 2 is also a general perspective view, but on a larger scale and mainly showing the top of the machine, and
Figs. 3 to 7 are sectional views of various parts of the machine.
In the drawing, 1 designates the rotating workpiece carrier and 2 the tool-holder slide, respectively mounted on the frame 3 of the machine and on a vertical sliding support 4 which can be actuated by pinion and rack using 'a handwheel 5 to adjust the distance between the tip of the engraving tool 6 and the axis of the workpiece holder 1.
Made up of a helical pinion in the center of which is fixed a mandrel (not shown) receiving the part to be graduated, the part holder 1 can be rotated by a shaft 7 and a worm 8 meshing the helical pinion, including a guard 9 protects the teeth.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The tool-holder slide 2 is guided by a dovetail in a table 10, tiltable on the support 4 around a hinge 11 and lockable in the chosen position, by means of a knurled screw 12 engaged in the slide. circular 13 of a graduated sector 14. A control lever 15, articulated at 16 on the table 10, attacks at 17 the slide 2 and allows to impart to it an alternating movement whose amplitude is limited by an adjustable stop.
This stop, which automatically determines the variable length of the successive graduation lines traced by the tool 6 on the piece to be graduated fixed to the workpiece holder 1, comprises a fixed part constituted by a console 18, fixed to the table 10 and provided with 'a knurled screw 19, and a movable part constituted by a drum 20 integral with the slide 2. As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the drum 20 which can rotate on an axis 21 with a ratchet 22, has two radial holes 23 along a diameter, the depth of which is adjustable by means of screws 24. At each stroke of the slide 2, the ratchet 22 meets a pawl 25 mounted on table 10 and rotates drum 20 through a certain angle. A spring 26 prevents the rotation in the opposite direction on the return of the slide, while the pawl 25 is retracted.
It is clear that when the rotation of the drum brings one of the holes 23 opposite the fixed stop 19, the latter enters the hole and the stroke of the slide, otherwise limited by the meeting of this stop with the cylindrical surface of the drum, is extended by a distance equal to the depth of the hole, determined by the adjustment of screw 24. The engraving tool 6 then draws a longer line on the part to be graduated. A different setting of the screws 24 in the two holes 23 results in a difference in the length of the lines depending on whether one or the other hole is at the stop, the shorter intermediate lines all being of the same length.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the example of FIG. 1, the rotation of the workpiece carrier 1 and, therefore, of the workpiece to be graduated, is obtained automatically, the workpiece carrier rotating by a determined angle at each stroke of the slide 2. For this purpose, on the shaft 7 of the Workpiece carrier is wedged a ratchet 27 (figs. 5 and 6) engaged by a pawl 28 of a ring 29 concentric with the ratchet, to which is fixed the end of a flexible sheathed cable 30, the other end of which is attached to a piston 31 sliding in a socket 32 fixed on the table 10. During the return stroke of the slide 2, the control lever 15 drives the piston 31 through a pusher 33 and thus turns the shaft 7 and the workpiece holder 1. An adjustable stop 34 limits the stroke of the piston 31 and a spring 35 returns it to its starting position.
Interchangeable, the ratchet 27 has the number of teeth corresponding to the division desired for the graduation of the part to be graded.
In the variant according to FIG. 2, the workpiece carrier 1 is driven by hand, by means of the handwheel 36 wedged on the shaft 7. The angle at which the workpiece carrier 1 is rotated at each stroke of the slide 2 to obtain the desired division of the graduation engraved by the tool 6 on the piece to be graduated, is determined by the operator by means of a circular vernier whose fixed element 37 is fixed to the support 38 while the movable element 39 can be at will locked on the shaft 7 and released by means of a screw 40, Advantageously, a three-element vernier (Fig. 7) is provided, the intermediate element 41 of which is wedged on the shaft 7.
With such a three-element vernier, the registration marks are always matched and all divisions can be performed without error, the intermediate element following the rotation of the shaft while the movable element is brought back to zero after each operation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
As stated above, the machine allows parts to be graduated with a cylindrical or conical surface, thanks to the tilting table 10 which can be blocked at right angles to its support to graduate a cylindrical part, or according to any inclination. desired, corresponding to the taper of a conical part.
Obviously, if desired, the machine can be controlled by a motor instead of being operated by hand; for example, a linkage or any other mechanism moved by the motor will attack the slide 2 to impart its back and forth movement to the table 10. The invention is moreover not limited to the embodiments and details of construction which have been described and shown by way of example, and modifications can be made without departing from its scope.
