<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

MOTOR DRIVEN STAPLER MACHINE
Stapling devices are known, the operation of which is controlled either by a lever operated by hand, or by a pedal. These devices are of very diverse types and use either a metal tape in which the staple is cut and bent (Belgian patent No. 446,144) or a coil of metal wire, or strips of staples formed in advance. , or, finally, any other staple or means of forming a staple.
In some cases, the devices which have just been defined are used at a high rate, which in the long run makes their operation painful and tedious.
The present patent relates to a device making the stapling, at will, either automatic or semi-automatic, said device being able to be used for the operation of any type of stapler.
According to the invention, the stapler used is controlled by a rocker actuated by a cam, this actuation being effected by means of a flexible intermediate, in order to avoid any accident, in the case of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
where too hard or too thick material would be placed between the stapler jaws.
The shape of the cam is designed in such a way as to make the torque requested by the machine as constant as possible, and the balance wheel is returned to the cam using a spring.
The cam is keyed on an axis carried by one or more bearings. The shaft is provided with a flywheel which can either rotate freely with respect to the shaft, or be made integral therewith using a retractable key. The flywheel can be secured to the shaft either directly or by means of a flexible device preventing jolts. In the first case, the flywheel can journal directly on the shaft, and in the second case, the flywheel is mounted on bearings which are specific to it.
This second arrangement is much more advantageous since it makes it possible to ensure perfect lubrication of the bearings, while increasing the number of grooves in which the retractable key can engage, thus allowing the engagement mechanism to obey immediately.
The flywheel is controlled by a motor and means are provided for obtaining several operating speeds.
The retractable key connecting the flywheel to the axle is held in the keyed position by a spring.
It is provided with a finger which, coming into contact with a part carried by the frame of the machine, causes it to be retracted and, consequently, the separation of the flywheel and the shaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The part carried by the frame of the machine is mounted on a sleeve which can: a) tilt under the action of the operating lever controlling the stapling, thus freeing the finger from the key which, under the action of its spring , secures the flywheel to the shaft, the machine therefore operating continuously and stapling occurring at each revolution of the shaft. b) move parallel to the shaft under the action of a command, so that the operation of the lever controlling the stapling allows the release of the key and therefore, the attachment of the flywheel to the shaft during one turn only.
In what follows, an embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and how it can be implemented.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows the machine seen in profile, FIG. 2 is a partial plane,
Fig. 3 is a partial section taken along the line I-II of FIG. 2,
Fig. 4 is a sectional plan along line III-IV of FIG. 2,
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation along the shaft of an alternative embodiment of the flywheel hub,
Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 show, in cross sections perpendicular to the shaft, variant embodiments of the attachment of the flywheel to the shaft.
These figures are given only by way of example and the devices represented by the figures are not limiting of the invention which also includes the variants and modifications in accordance with its spirit.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Referring to fig. 1, 2 and 3 show an embodiment of the machine which uses, in the particular case, the stapling head which is the subject of Belgian patent no. 446,144. The machine consists of a frame formed by the angles 1, the plates 2, the whole being securely bolted by the threaded rods 3 clamping the various parts by means of tubular spacers a 4 (ig.2) . The lower parts of the angles 1 are fixed on a base 5 (fig.l) allowing, moreover, to bolt the machine on a workbench or on any base.
The stapling head 6 is fixed to the front angles 1 and this fixing is effected very simply by means of the bolt 7 which is screwed into the stapling head and resting on a pin 8 engaged in the cold angles. This assembly makes the stapling head quickly interchangeable at the slightest operational incident.
The mechanism of the head 6 is controlled by a balance 9 oscillating around the axis 10. One of the ends of the balance comprises a ball 11 penetrating a hole in the part to be controlled. The balance 9 is set in motion by a lever 12 formed by two flat bars located on either side of the balance 9 and spaced by the sleeve 13 and the rods 14.
The action of the lever 12 on the balance 9 is effected by means of the leaf spring 15. A bolt 16 provided with a locknut 17 and screwed into a part 18, articulated to the lever 12, allows the adjustment of the position of the balance 9 relative to the lever 12 and, consequently, the action of the ball 11 on the knives of the stapling head 6.
The lever 14 is provided with a roller 19 rolling on a cam 20 keyed on the shaft 21, which is itself journaled in two ball bearings 22.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Note that, to obviate the variable force required by the various operations of the stapling head, the cam is set so that the force required of the motor is as constant as possible.
Note, also, that this cam is hollowed out (fig. 4) in order to reduce its inertia when it is started.
The roller 19 is kept in contact with the cam 20 by means of a coil spring R working in traction and the points of application of which are located, respectively, on the lever 12 and on a spacer of the frame. .
At the end of the shaft 21 is the flywheel 23 which can either rotate freely on the shaft or be secured to it by means of the retractable key 24.
This key is semi-cylindrical and is housed in a suitable groove on the shaft. It is guided at the ends by two cylindrical parts 25 and retained by a ring 26.
The key is pivoted by a finger 27 which is integral with it and said key is held in its active position by the spring 28, visible in FIGS. 2 and 4, one end of this spring resting on the shaft, the other end acting on the key.
The finger 27, rotating with the shaft, can come into contact with a part 29, integral with the frame of the machine, said part retaining the finger 27 and forcing the key 24 to pivot, despite the action of the spring 28, which causes the flywheel 23 to separate from the shaft 21.
The part 29 is mounted on a sleeve 30 (fig. 3) journaling on a fixed axis 31 and it can be erased, in the direction of the arrow, under the action of a lever 32,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
at the end of which is hooked the control rod 33 connected to a control pedal (not shown).
The part 29 has two projections 34 and 35 intended to act on the finger of the retractable key.
These projections are brought into their operating position by sliding the part 29 along the axis 31 which supports it. This sliding is provided by the pivoting axis 36 at 37 and 38 provided with an operating part 39 and an eccentric 40, the rotation of which causes the movement of the part 29 in the direction of the arrows shown in FIGS. 2 and 4.
When the machine is operating in a piecemeal mode, it is the projection 35 which acts on the finger of the key 24, the part 29 operating in the manner of an anchor escapement. When, on the contrary, the machine is operating at the continuous stapling regime, it is the projection 34 which causes the stapling to stop.
The rotation of the flywheel is ensured by means of a trapezoidal belt placed on the rim of the flywheel and on one of the stages of the motor pulley M. The aunt of the flywheel not having stages, it is necessary, for a same length of belt, to be able to move the motor M. For this purpose, it is mounted "to rocker" that is to say that it is fixed to the frame of the machine by a joint P, the weight of the motor ensuring belt tension.
Figs. 5 and 6 show an alternative embodiment of the steering wheel hub. In this variant, the rolling and interlocking functions are separate, which makes it possible to ensure each of them with greater safety. In addition, this engagement function takes place via an elastic connection.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Referring to these figures, it can be seen that the flywheel 23 is mounted on bearings 40 supported by rings mounted on the shaft 21 and which is surrounded by a sleeve 41 having internally a certain number of grooves intended to accommodate the shaft. key 24. In FIG. 6, these grooves are 6 in number. The engagement thus occurs without any delay, as soon as the retractable key is released, it can pivot under the action of its spring 28 and engage in the first groove which introduces himself to her. The connection between the sleeve 41 and the flywheel 23 is provided by elastic blocks 42 of ordinary rubber or of synthetic rubber.
Many variations can be made to this embodiment of elastic connection.
In the one represented by FIG. 7, the blocks. shock absorbers are formed by elastic cylinders of natural or synthetic rubber, the ring 41 being mounted with a slight play in the hub of the flywheel 23 so as to leave it a certain freedom allowing it to automatically center itself on the shaft 21.
In the embodiment of FIG. 8, the elastic blocks 42 are weakened in their central part, so as to fit "dovetail" into the flywheel 23 and the ring 41.
Fig. 9 shows an embodiment in which the elastic intermediate is constituted by a rubber sleeve 42 comprising interior and exterior projections, said projections penetrating into cells made in the flywheel 23 and in the sleeve 41.
The elastic blocks can be arranged in the manner indicated by part a of FIG. 10 in which the blocks are disposed between projections of the flywheel and the socket. Elastic blocks 42 can be replaced
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
by coil springs 43 visible in part b of FIG. 10. Part ± of this same figure shows that it is possible to use springs 44 placed between the projections, the elasticity achieved in this case being in one direction of rotation.
The springs used work on compression. In the embodiments shown in FIG. 11, the springs used work in tension and parts a, b, c, of this figure show the different ways of placing these springs.
Of course, many embodiments which are only apparently different from each other can be given to the invention and all the details described or shown in the drawings should be regarded as examples and not as limiting the present invention.
