 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  Improvements to double or multiple glazed windows or equivalent.

   This invention relates to windows with double or multiple glazing or the equivalent and its main object is to create a prefabricated double or multiple glazing, ready to be installed, established so that the dew point of the enclosed air of permanently in the glazing is low enough to prevent condensation therein at the lowest temperatures to which the window may be exposed.

   The method of manufacturing a double or multiple glazing or the equivalent, consists, according to the invention, in assembling two or more panes of the same dimensions, one

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 spacer piece disposed between each pair of panes along the perimeter of the marginal surface thereof and, between each spacer and each adjacent pane, a layer of plasticized polyvinyl acetal resin, vents being provided in each intermediate piece to allow the displacement of the gaseous content of the cavity enclosed by this piece, to heat this assembly to adhere the polyvinyl acetal to the panes and to each intermediate piece, and, while maintaining the assembly practically at the temperature grip,

   in displacing the vapor of the plasticizer from the cavity located between each pair of panes with the aid of a gas, free of vapors liable to condense, for example relatively dry air, and then, when the assembly has been cooled, to displace the gas from each cavity by filling each cavity with air having a degree of relative humidity such that at the coldest temperatures to which the window can be subjected, the trapped air does not reach its point dew, and finally to seal the vents.

   Preferably, a waterproof coating is applied to the outer edges of the adhesive layers.

   The panes can each be made of a simple pane of glass, or of plywood, particularly the so-called security one which comprises one or more plastic layers individually interposed between the glass sheets.

   The spacers can be made of metal, plywood glass, or a suitable plastic material, for example a co-polymerized vinyl acetate chloride.

   The panes can be transparent, or the inner face or the outer face, or one of the two can bear a design, or a design can be similarly formed on the inner faces of the sheets of glass incorporated in the glass.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 plywood, or on one or both sides of the middle glass sheet of a plywood glass comprising two or more plastic layers.

   A glazing according to the invention comprises two or more panes of similar dimensions, the internal marginal parts of which are each fixed by an adhesive to a space piece interposed between each pair of panes by a polyvinyl butyral resin. plasticized, the outer edges thereof preferably being covered with a waterproof substance. This covering material may be a minimum paint, a bitumastic paint, a synthetic paint, and / or a protective tack tape, particularly a thin hard metal tape, to provide resistance to mechanical penetration and while preventing the passage of water.

   In order to better understand the invention, the following description will be given, by way of example, of the execution of double glazing for windows, comprising panes each consisting of a sheet of glass, with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a double glazing, according to one embodiment of the invention, part of the front pane being removed.

   Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view on a larger scale, in section taken along the line II-II of FIG. 1.

   Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, also on a larger scale, in section through one of the vents of the embodiment according to FIG. 1.

   Fig. 4 is a fragmentary broken down view of a variant of the double glazing for windows according to the invention.

   In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the window glazing comprises two panes 1 and 2, the flat faces, facing each other, are kept at the desired distance from each other by a marginal insert
4, 5. In this embodiment, the spacer 4, 5 is made of a suitable metal, such as copper, and has

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 te a U-shaped cross section arranged so that the core 4 is practically flush with the coincident edges of the two panes, while the wings 5 of the U-shaped pieces lie flat on the marginal parts of the faces of the panes facing towards the side. inside.

   Between each wing 5 and the adjacent marginal part of the corresponding pane 1 or 2 is a strip of adhesive material 3 forming a strong and tight seal between the panels 1 and 2 and the spacer 4, 5 and a series of 'vents 6 are provided in this intermediate piece, in particular in the core 4 thereof. In the embodiment shown in the drawing, these vents 6 are two in number and they are arranged such that in the finished glazing they are at diametrically opposed angles or near these angles.

   During assembly of the glazing, a border of adhesive material 3 is applied to the margins of one face of the panes 1 or 2, in the form of a strip cut from a sheet of suitable thickness (for example 0.5 mm) of plasticized polyvinyl butyral. In order to keep these strips in place during the subsequent assembly operations, they can be made locally tacky by applying to them or by applying to the surface of the glass to which they are to be glued, points of a suitable wetting agent, such as butyl glycol ether or monoethyl ethyl glycol ether.

   Dots of wetting agent can then be applied in a similar manner to the outer surface of the strips to make them locally tacky, and the individual metal spacers 4, 5 are then placed on the margins, arranged in such a manner. that the two vents 6 are located at diagonally opposite angles of the mounted glazing, the parts 4. 5 being suitably connected together at the corners.

  The vents 6 are closed by plugs of adhesive material.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   An adhesive border is then formed in a similar manner on the frame-shaped spacer 4, 5 and the second window 2 or 1 is applied thereto. The vents 6 are drilled so that a nozzle, in turn connected to a flexible pipe, can be easily connected thereto, as described below, and finally closed by means of a countersunk screw, so as to obtain a finished part with a uniform surface and no protrusions.

   The mounted glazing is then clamped, preferably resiliently, and placed in an oven to be heated to a suitable temperature, until the adhesive plastics material flows sufficiently to penetrate all voids and cavities and form a seal. effective adhesive, after which the vents 6 are connected by flexible pipes to a suction pump and to the atmosphere of the furnace or other hot air source, and hot air is thus drawn through the air. space between the panes, while the plasticizer remains in the vapor state, so that all this vapor is removed from the interior space of the glazing. Instead of a resilient clamping device, other means, for example weights, can be employed to maintain compression during heating.

   Alternatively, a pump delivering hot air from a suitable source can be connected to one of the vents 6 and the hot air can thus be forced through the space between panels 1 and 2 for expel plasticizer vapors.

   After the glazing has been cooled, chemically dried air is passed through the interior space of the glazing until it contains only dry air, after which it is sealed and welded. vents 6.

   A preferred method of sealing the vents 6 is shown in FIG. 3. As has already been said, each vent is threaded to receive a countersunk screw 7, and extended by a @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 nut or other part 8 threaded at the same pitch, which is preferably fixed on the internal face of the core 4. After filling the internal space of the glazing with dry air, screw 7 is screwed into the vent 6 as well as in the nut or part 8 which form a thread of sufficient length to receive the screw, and finally the outer end of the latter is completely welded to the core 4, or else a small plate is placed flat, such as 9, on the outer end of the countersunk screw to cover the vent opening on all sides and then welded in place.

   Finally, a waterproof coating can be applied around the outer edges of the spacer.

   The double glazing thus produced contains air having an appropriate dew point, is robust and suitable for installation, and provides effective thermal and acoustic insulation, while its manufacture can be carried out without waiting. or produce particular atmospheric conditions of drought, by rendering completely unnecessary the use of dehydrating agents in the interior space of the glazing.

   The glazing can comprise a framing frame, for example made of metal, which can be connected to the panels and have a fixing rim or its equivalent. This framing frame may have an inner lining of waterproof material or be attached to the glazing by a waterproof adhesive, so that when the frame is fitted, this adhesive constitutes an adhesive. protective coating for glazing.

   In the embodiment according to FIG. 4, U-section metal inserts can be replaced by glass strips. Strips of adhesive material 3 are applied to the margins of one of the panes 1 or 2 and are made locally tacky by the application of a wetting agent. Strips 5a, of a 6 mm thick glass plate

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 or other, constituting the intermediate piece of the glazing are then arranged on the margins, in contact with the adhesive, as well as two pieces with vents 6a, having openings 6 and located at the diagonally opposite angles of the glazing, after which the joints are sealed between the glass strips and between the vent pieces and the glass strips by means of pieces of adhesive 3a ..

   The body 6a of the vents housed in the intermediate frames preferably has a rectangular shape and a thickness equal to that of the intermediate pieces 5, that is to say to the width of the glass strips which form the intermediate pieces, and 'vent 6 extends through body 6a to open into the space between panes 1 and 2.

   After placing the second window 2 or 1 with the interposition of the adhesive 3, the glazing elements are clamped together and the latter is then treated in the manner described above.

   A double or multiple glazing according to the invention can be incorporated in a wall or a door to provide permanent lighting or be mounted as a moving part, for example be mounted hinged in a doorway; can also be used as a replacement for ordinary panes in conventional window frames.

   A double or multiple glazing according to the invention can also be used as a protective box for paintings or documents and the cavity can be filled with an inert gas preventing oxidation.

   In addition, as already said, at least one face of at least one of the panes can, if desired, be adorned with designs or provided with inscriptions.

   When the internal face of a pane is corrugated or fluted, the intermediate piece is preferably formed from the same sheet of glass, so that the ribs can coincide.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 with the grooves of the panes, so that a large sealing surface is obtained without voids or cavities and a good bond with the panes.

   It goes without saying that although in the specific embodiments described only two panes have been mentioned, the glass or its equivalent, in accordance with the invention, may comprise three, four or any other desired number of panes. of the same dimensions comprising spacers interposed between each pair of panes.
