<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"MECHANICAL SAFETY SCREEN CONTROL DEVICE FOR
The object of the present patent is to provide an on-screen safety device, particularly for mechanical presses, which achieves the maximum efficiency which may be required in the application of safety devices of the kind contemplated.
The control device currently produced is the result of studies and examinations undertaken for many years on the causes of accidents resulting from mechanical failures, mechanical deficiencies, carelessness of the personnel assigned to the operation of this type of machine and the goal achieved was the development of a complete mechanical control device forming a mechanical link capable of overcoming all the difficulties and deficiencies inherent both in the mechanical construction of the press itself and in the personnel serving it.
To this end, the accompanying drawings represent schematically
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
for explanatory and non-limiting purposes:
FIG. I, a perspective view of an open safety screen, adapted to a press at the stop, shown partially.
Fig. 2, a view similar to fig.l, the safety screen closed and the press ready to operate.
Fig.3 a view similar to that of Fig.I and 2, showing the safety screen placed out of use.
Fig. 4 shows an exterior side view of the mechanism and the safety screen control,
The flg. 5, shows a section in the longitudinal direction of the mechanism in connection with the clutch cam of the press.
Fig.6 shows an end view of the clutch cam abutting the stop key and the safety lock.
Fig. 7 is an end view similar to Fig. 6, showing the stop key and the safety lock, turned in opposite directions to allow the passage of the clutch cam, followed by that of the locking cam. the screen.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the safety screen comprises two side screens 17, fixed in a frame 10 furnished with sockets II traversed by a hinge pin 12, in order to allow them to be pivoted. downwards, as shown in fig. 3, when not in use, at the front there is a front screen 16 fixed in a frame 13 provided with bushings 14 and crossed by a pin 15 to allow it to be folded down down.
The screens 17 and 16 are thus fixed to the table 2 of the press I and foldable or removable. A fourth front screen 9, arranged in a frame 8 oomplète closure at the front. For this purpose, the frame 8 carries two arms 7 integral with sockets 6 articulated on axes 5 fixed to the ends of arms 3 joined by a spacer 57 and articulated at 4 to the frame of the press I.
Bolts 18 ensuring, depending on whether they are engaged in the perforations 18 'or 18' 'of the central articulation part of the arm 3, their rigid fixation in fig. I and 2, in the working position, and in the non-use position, see fig. 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
One of the sockets 6, the one on the right for example, is solid. part of an arm 54 to which the rod 19 is articulated, the other end of which is articulated to the arm 20 of an angled lever which can pivot on a fixed axis 23 and which is subdivided at this point into two branches 21 and 22, see fig. .4.
On branch 22 is articulated at 24 the end of the control rod 25 connected to the operating pedal, not shown, of the press, while the end 29 of the branch 22 is engaged in the slide 50 of a rod 49 being extended by the connecting rod 51 which is articulated at 40 on the arm biased by a return spring 41, a sleeve 39 integral with a shaft 45 which can rotate in a nozzle 35 held in a support 55.
On the left end of the shaft 45, see fig.5, the stop key 32 is wedged. This key 32 has an extension 42 intended to limit its angular displacement in one direction, by the presence of a stop 43 integral with the press frame.
The stop key 32 is housed in the sector-shaped recess, of a part 33 called a safety lock and integral with the nozzle 35, This nozzle 35 capable of angular movements around the shaft 45, is wedged on a sleeve 36 provided with an operating arm 52 at the end of which, on a pin 38, the end of the operating rod 28 and the end of a return spring 37 are articulated.
On the press shaft 56 provided with the eccentric controlling the slide of the press I, is wedged a cam 31 called the screen locking cam 9. In the end of the shaft 56 and in the bore inside the cam 31, is engaged the horizontal longitudinal part of the clutch cam 30 capable of being engaged, during its angular displacement by the return spring 46 fixed at 48 on the cam 30 and at 47 to the periphery of the cam 31, in a recess of Italesage inside the hub 53 of the rotation flywheel and thus involve the shaft 5b and the ring 31 in the necessary rotation so that the press oouliss can perform its stroke job.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The shaft drive mechanism 56 is sufficiently well known to those skilled in the art that it is permissible not to speak of it further.
Referring to Figs. I and 4, the screen 9 is raised, and the slide is stationary, the attendant can therefore safely have access to the table 2 for the operation to be performed.
The mechanism in connection with the shaft 56 of the press is on a larger scale shown in the positions given in Figs. 5 and 6.
If under these conditions, the operator exerts a thrust on the mowing pedal, not shown, it drives downward, arrow X, fig.4,. the rod 25 articulated at 24 on the branch 22 of the lever 20 and consequently rotates at 23, the lever 20 as well as its two branches 21 and 22. The branch 20 drives the rod 19 which rotates the crank arm 54 and thus the bushes 6 around the pins 5.
These sockets 6 carrying the arms 7 integral with the frame 8 enclosing the screen 9, move in a rotary direction and drive the screen from position fig.I to position Fig.2 thus cutting off access to table 2 , which is completely enclosed by the fixed, removable or swivel screens 16 and 17 and the mobile screen 9, see fig. 3. during the movement of the rod 25 downwards, the arm 21 also drives downwards the rod 27 which is articulated to it at 26 and the latter the rod 28, the end of which is articulated on the pivot 38 of the sleeve 36 wedged on the nozzle 35 rotating in the support 55 as well as around the central shaft 45.
The end of the nozzle 35 opposite the socket 36 forms the sector-shaped safety lock 33 in a recess from which the stop key 32 can move. The angular return of the safety lock 33 is effected by the spring 37. one of the ends of which is fixed to the pivot 38.
Thus, during the time of pushing on the pedal, the safety lock 33 has moved angularly to the right while the stop key 32 has not yet started to move angularly to the left, because the pivot 29 from the end of the arm 22
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
slides in the slide-, ¯50 of the rod 49 surmounted by the rod
51 articulated at 40 on the sleeve 39 returned by the spring 41 and made integral with the shaft 45 carrying at its opposite end the stop key 32.
Thus, in order for the stop key 32 and the safety cam 33 to be able to release the clutch cam 30, it is first necessary for the rod 25 to pivot the cam 33 by a certain angle 4 while the pin d stop 32 does not move, see fig. 4. At this moment, if the hand or a finger remained engaged between the longitudinal edges facing the frames 13 of the screen Ib, 8 of the screen 9, the rod 25 could not continue its course beyond the angle [ alpha], from which only the rod 51 is pulled down, to complete its useful stroke causing the angular displacement of the key 32, and the release of the clutch cam 30 whose displacement by the traction of the spring 46 causes the clutch of the shaft 56 with the rotating wheel hub of the press,
In summary,
the branches 21 and 22 must have gone through the angle + ss so that the stop key 32 and the safety lock 33 can move angularly, each in the opposite direction to let through, see fig, 7, the cam of clutch 30, followed by the locking cam 31 of the safety screen which thus, when it passes between the ends of the longitudinal radial faces of 32 and 33, prevents the opening of the safety screen in the event of the The foot would be lifted off the clutch pedal too soon, as the slide stroke was not completed.
The lifting of the foot of the pedal brought the parts 30 and 33 in the position of fig. 6 or the hull 30 followed by the locking cam 31 comes by its radial face 34 butts against both 30 and 33,
As can be seen, the clutch cam 30 is hand. held between, on the one hand, the screen locking cam 31, on the other hand between the stop cap 32 and the safety lock 33.
If the clutch cam 30 breaks, the locking cam 31 abuts against the stop key 32 and the safety lock.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
rity 33.
If 32 breaks, cam 30 abuts safety latch 33 and if 30 and 32 were to break, screen locking cam 31 would abut safety cam.
It goes without saying that the mechanical safety screen control device can be applied to ordinary presses, as well as to presses provided with disengaging devices step by step.
The screens such as 17 and Ib instead of being hinged downwards by pivoting could be provided with pins which engage in the table 2 or on a rim of the frame and thus be removed when not in use.
The constitutive and transparent material of the screens 17-16-9 may be chosen as appropriate.
In summary, a mechanical safety screen control device for mechanical presses, characterized by the following, should be considered as coming within the scope of the present patent.
