<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 1 est une .vue latérale d'une clef conforme à l'invention, et serrant un écrou relativement petit ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Opposite jaw key. This invention relates to keys of the type comprising a pair of opposing jaws, one of which is rigidly connected to the shank or handle of the key, while the other is substantially hook-shaped and articulated. - abutment on the handle, so that the jaws are tight against one. object engaged between them when the handle is operated to rotate this object.
A wrench of this type can be used for nuts or screws of various sizes without preliminary adjustment of its opening. On the other hand, it has the drawback of not always engaging the faces of the nut but sometimes the edges of the latter, which can cause it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the destruction. On the other hand, the direction of the tightening face of the articulated jaw varies with the position of the latter, and the fixed jaw must therefore be suitably curved so as to always present a tang which is at the less approximately parallel to the clamping face of the articulated jaw, and thereby to allow the wrench to engage a pair of opposed parallel faces of a nut.
Apart from the fact that this construction results in a relatively small contact surface between the fixed jaw and the nut, the measurement described is not effective in all positions of the movable jaw and the contact between the jaw. fixed jaw and the nut can, as mentioned above, be made on an edge of the latter?
The object of this invention is to avoid these drawbacks and to provide a key of the kind indicated above, and in which full face engagement between the jaws of the key and an object engaged therebetween will be ensured within. the opening limits of the key.
For this purpose, the invention procuresne key of the type examined; wherein the clamping face of at least one of the opposite jaws is adjustable about an axis parallel to the axis of the pivot of the articulated jaw and located in or near this clamping face. The adjustment axis of the clamping face is preferably placed approximately in the middle, between the ends thereof.
This construction can be done in different ways. In the preferred device, an approximately semi-circular element is introduced into the jaw in question so that its planar face constitutes the clamping face of the jaw, while its circular edge constitutes a load-bearing face around which the element can be rotated relative to the jaw.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The semicircular element can be positioned in different ways in the jaw. The bearing face of the jaw adapted to receive this element will preferably be machined with a dovetail groove extending in the direction of the circumference of the support face and engaged by a corresponding tenon on the circumferential face of the element. semicircular.
The invention is shown in the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a key according to the invention, and tightening a relatively small nut;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the wrench tightening a larger nut.
Fig. 3 and 4 are sections on a large scale, respectively, taken along lines A-A and B-B of FIG. 2.
Fig. 5 is a side view of another arrangement.
In the drawing, 1 is the shank or handle of the key, integral with a jaw 2, the substantially flat clamping face of which is denoted by 3. A jaw 5 substantially hook-shaped is articulated with the handle 1 by a pin or pin 4. The substantially flat clamping face of the jaw 5 is denoted by 6. The pivot 4 is arranged so that, when the jaws 2 and 5 of the key engage a nut 7 or 8 (respectively Fig. . 1 and Fig.
2) and the handle is pulled in the direction indicated by the arrow C, the jaws self-tighten on the nut and turn the nut.
According to the invention, the clamping face 6 of the articulated jaw 5 is adjustable about an axis parallel to the axis of the pivot 4 and located in or near the clamping face you.
In the example shown, this condition is achieved by the semi-circular shape of the clamping face 6 formed of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
approximately semicircular element 9, the diameter of which coincides exactly or approximately with the serrante face and which is embedded in an approximately semicircular groove in the jaw 5, in which the element 9 can rotate about its axis. Element 9 is held in: The groove by means of a dovetail 10 around the circumference of element 9 and having inclined side walls 81 '' engaging the similarly inclined walls of the groove 11 in the jaw 5.
The element 9 can therefore only be detached from the jaw 5 if it is rotated in the latter so that the dovetail 10 is released from the groove 11. In order to limit the movement. of rotation of the element during normal use of the key, a circumferential groove 13 in the dovetail 10 is engaged by a fixing screw 12 screwed into the jaw 5 to constitute a stop for the element 9 .
The clamping face 6 can obviously, in every practically possible position of the jaw 5 with respect to the jaw 2, adjust itself in a position parallel to the clamp, -, 3, or constitute a defined angle with it. * - This last possibility is important in the case where the faces engaged in the key are not parallel.
The gripping faces 3 and 6 are thus capable of achieving a facial engagement with a polygonal object as well as of gripping the latter firmly without risk of destroying its edges.
The adjustment of the element S is carried out automatically when the jaws of the key are brought to engage the object in question.
The jaw 5 is pressed towards the jaw 2 by means of a spring to ensure initial contact with the nut 7 or 8 before the tightening action of the key commences. In most keys of the type envisaged, this spring is usually arranged so that foreign matter, such as earth,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
metal or other shavings can be caught and prevent the action of the spring or even prevent the relative movement of the machines.In the construction shown, the handle 1 is formed with a groove or depression 14 of approximately circular shape and whose axis -coincides with the axis of the pivot 4. This groove receives a circular tenon 15 of the jaw 5, of approximately the same diameter and pierced with a hole-for the pivot 4.
The tenon 15 thus occupies practically the entire space of the groove 14 so that foreign material cannot enter this groove. The tenon, however, has a reduced radius over part of its circumference located in the groove 14 so that an arcuate compartment 16 is formed, in which a spring is housed. 17, one end of which is formed. abuts against a radial face
18 of the tenon 15 and the other against a pin 19 inserted in the handle 1 and through the compartment 16. The spring is therefore fully protected against dirt, etc ..
In the form shown in fig 5, the clamping face 3a of the fixed jaw 2 is adjustable, an approximately semicircular element 9a similar to the element 9 of the pins 1 and 2 being placed in the jaw. The element 9a can be fixed in a manner similar to the element 9. The face'serrante 6 of the articulated jaw, in FIG. 5 is not adjustable relative to the body of the jaw. Alternatively, the jaw 5 can be, as indicated in phantom, provided with a clamping face formed by an adjustable element 9, the two clamping faces of the key thus being adjustable.
The invention is not limited to the forms shown and described. Thus, the adjustable tightening face (s) are not necessarily free, as in the examples shown, but they can also be designed to be adjusted automatically, depending on the position of the articulated jaw, so that the tightening faces are
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
always parallel. The tightening faces can be knurled to ensure a firm tightness, and their axis of rotation does not have to be in the faces.
Claims.
