<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"Improvements in the manufacture of leaf springs ','
The present invention relates to the shaping and heat treatment of leaf springs of the type generally used in automobile construction.
Heretofore, the shaping of the leaf springs with a view to imparting the desired camber to them, as well as the heat treatment of these leaves, has been an expensive and difficult industrial operation. The nature of the steel used and the thickness of the material required the application of considerable effort to shape the blades with the desired precision; Moreover, he
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It was difficult to apply the subsequent heat treatment without modifying the camber thus produced. For this reason, the blades are first bent and then tightened in strong presses to subject them to the required quenching. give them the desired metallurgical characteristics, this tightening preventing any deformation or modification with respect to the established camber.
This required extremely complex equipment and it was difficult to establish a flexible manufacturing method capable of being achieved in a minimum of time with elements of such dimensions and of such weight, that is to say - to say, as they presented themselves to this day. In addition, the surface of the blade was prone to deterioration during heating and quenching operations due to the inevitable slowness of the process, and it was extremely difficult to achieve the desired metallurgical characteristics while maintaining. the spring in the preferred form.
Another difficulty is that the leaves often exhibited uneven camber or thickness, since the ends of the leaf springs are often bevelled or have some other shape which differs from a true circular curve.
The invention aims to establish a method of shaping and heat treating leaf springs, allowing the operation to be performed automatically and continuously. The invention further aims to establish an apparatus and a method of operation thereof, for the shaping and heat treatment of leaf springs, using, as a heat source, a high alternating electric current. frequency.
The invention also aims to establish a "chain" method according to which the starting element or blank of the blade can be advanced automatically and with a uniform speed to be subjected successively to the operations of heating, bending, annealing and quenching, the whole of which determines the formation of a leaf spring com-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
complete and with a minimum of surface deterioration and while maintaining the prescribed degree of dimensional accuracy.
The invention also aims to establish an apparatus for the shaping and heat treatment of leaf springs, this apparatus having a large production capacity compared to its dimensions, requiring only a minimum of care, and making it possible to eliminate heavy loads. presses that were needed until now,
The advantages of this method and this apparatus will be immediately apparent to those skilled in the art. The entire shaping and heat treatment apparatus is compact and easy to handle. Its operation is automatic, and the device only requires a supply of blanks of flat blades with bevelled ends or not, to provide, after appropriate treatment, a finished leaf spring, having everywhere the desired camber, heat treated, cooled and ready. during assembly.
It should be recognized that one of the main advantages is the relative speed of the operation by which the blade is shaped and heat treated, compared to previous methods which made use of ordinary clamping devices.
The accompanying drawing is a partial view in vertical section of a device for treating the leaf spring in accordance with the present invention.
In this drawing, 10 denotes a frame, the lower part 11 of which is impermeable to fluids and contains a bath 12 of quench refrigerant. Between the walls of the frame 10 is mounted an apparatus comprising the following main elements, in the order of operation: blank feed mechanism 13, initial heating coils 14, initial bending mechanism 15, final heating coil 16, final bending mechanism 17, quenching apparatus 18 and cooling and discharging conveyor 19.
Blades 20
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
are cut to the desired length in the usual manner and their ends are bevelled or thinned longitudinally as shown at 22 and transversely as shown at 21. These blanks are fed from outside the frame 10 between the drive rollers 23 of the blank feed apparatus13, which advances the blanks so that they pass through the induction coils 24 which constitute the primary heating coils 14. These coils are excited by alternating currents (including source is not shown, which may be of any conventional type), whose frequency may be appropriate to the physical characteristics of the blanks to be heated and may for example be of the order of 9600 cycles per second.
The speeds of the blank feed device 13 and the driving devices which follow it are synchronized so that the blank is sufficiently heated in the initial reel so that it can be bent at the camber. desired by applying minimum effort.
On leaving the initial spool, the blank 20 engages the initial bending mechanism 15, which comprises a driven roller 25 and a support roller 26, the latter mounted on the fixed shaft 27. On this The latter also pivots an arm 23 carrying a guide roller 29 which is normally biased towards the roller driven 25 by a spring 30 fixed to the frame 10. A limit switch 32, cooperating with an extension 33 of the arm 28, is arranged to react to the thickness of the blank passing between the driven roller 25 and the guide roller 29.
The fixed upper axle 34 supports the upper "L" arm 35 which carries the bending roller 36 and a cam roller 37 mounted on the large "L" arm. The roller 37 is in contact with the primary cam 39 rotatably mounted on the shaft 40 and carrying a secondary cam 42 which cooperates with the secondary roller 43 cooperating in turn with the second limit switch 44. This
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The purpose of the mechanism is to control the degree of bending printed on the blade, taking into account the variations in thickness, given the presence of the bevelled ends, 22 mentioned above.
It will be appreciated that a modification of the relative position of the support roller 26 and of the bending roller 36 with respect to the drive roller 25 makes it possible to vary the camber printed on the blank which moves between these rollers. In other words, when the thickness of the blank varies, as shown here at the bevelled ends, the degree of curvature would change accordingly if the rollers were fixed; however, the apparatus according to the invention comprises the means necessary to compensate for such variations in the thickness of the blank, as well as to apply different degrees of curvature to various points of the spring if this were necessary.
In the position shown in the drawing, the various co-acting rollers are arranged so as to impart a desired uniform curvature to the middle part or section of constant thickness of the leaf spring, while the cam roller 37 rolls on the spring. circular trace of lesser radius 38 of the profile of the primary cam 39.
It will be understood that after the primary cam has rotated by 90 relative to the position shown in the drawing, its active radius, which now corresponds to one of the linear paths 41 of the profile of the cam, will increase, and that the roller 37 will move counterclockwise with respect to axis 34, while bending roller 36 will move in the same direction, thus accentuating the relative curvature of the curve determined by the active faces of rollers 25, 26 and 36 , with a tendency to accentuate the relative camber of the blank subjected to the action of these rollers, which makes it possible to compensate for the relative variation in the thickness of the blank at the bevelled ends 22.
The circular path at maximum radius 45 of the cam 39 corresponds to the alignment of the bending rollers when no blank passes
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
between them. The operation of the cam 39 is governed by the limit switch 32, the arrangement being such that, when the leading edge of the blade enters between the driven roller 25, and the guide roller 29, moving these apart. rollers, the limit switch is energized and begins to determine the rotation of the.
cam 39 from the position offset by 180 with respect to that shown in the drawing, the position in which the roller 37 is in contact with the circular path at maximum radius 45, to a position in which one of the linear paths 41 of the cam 39 acts on the roller 37 and progressively reduces the obliquity of the bending roller 36 during the passage of the thinned end 22, of the blank, below this roller.
Thus, the relative position of the active rollers, s changes automatically to compensate for the reduction in thickness determined by the thinned end, so as to impart a uniform camber to the whole blank or even to determine a more curvature. accentuated at the ends, when necessary, the whole being determined by the profile of the cam. The effective rotation cycle of the primary cam 39 is governed by the secondary cam 42, its roller 43 and the secondary limit switch 44, which can be adjusted to suit the different lengths of springs or springs. of thinned ends which the apparatus is called upon to treat, and to the desired degree of additional corrective curvature.
In the drawing, the cam 39 is somewhat exaggerated in order to better highlight its role; its actual shape, calculated with a view to obtaining the desired displacement of the bending roll and the duration of its stay in a fixed position in the intervals between successive blanks or when this roll acts on parts of uniform section, is a simple question mechanical layout.
Thus, when the blank initially enters the bending mechanism, its advancement speed is synchronized in such a way that when its front end reaches the roller
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
bender 36, the latter occupies the position in which it must act on a minimum thickness, that is to say, that the roller 37 moves on the circular path of maximum radius 45 and, as the cam rotates in synchronism with the 'advancement of the blank during its passage under the bending roller, the roller 37 engages on the linear path 41 of the cam 39, which follows the preceding path and which corresponds to the length of the thinned part 22, with progressive modification of the position of the support roller 36 as the obliquity of the cam decreases,
so that the roller 37 engages the circular path 38 at minimum radius when the thick part of the blank comes into contact with the roller 36. The same process, but in reverse, occurs when the posterior thinned extremity is reached. The secondary limit switch 44, which cooperates with the secondary cam, ensures that the desired time relation of the cam 39 is maintained as a function of the length of the spring and of the thinned ends and of the distance between. successive blanks, this switch being combined in an appropriate manner with the primary limit switch 32.
The bent blank then passes through a second heating coil 16 adjusted so as to raise the temperature of the blank above the critical point of the steel, and this in accordance with the metallurgical characteristics which it is desired to obtain. The blank is then subjected to a final bending operation in the mechanism 17, the construction of which is substantially identical to that of the initial mechanism described above, this second bending having the aim of rectifying the shape of the blade. after the second heating or annealing and to maintain the prescribed camber during the quenching operation.
It goes without saying that here also it is necessary to compensate for the variations in the thickness of the blank due to the thinned ends and that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The draft must be held rigidly during tempering, if the required camber is to be obtained. The final bending mechanism 17 will not be described in particular and has not been shown in detail, given that it is substantially identical to the initial bending mechanism 15. It will suffice to indicate that it comprises the or-. following ganes which correspond to those of the initial mechanism: the driven roller 47, the guide roller 48, the bending roller 49, the arm 50, the primary limit switch 52, the bra, s 53 in "L "and the support roller 54.
Cam follower 55 is shown above its associated mechanism, while the secondary limit switch, which corresponds to that described in detail in connection with the primary bending mechanism, has been omitted in the drawing; However, it goes without saying that it has a construction substantially identical to that of the secondary switch described above.
It can therefore be seen that, when the annealed blade leaves the second heating coil 16 ,. it is taken up by the final bending mechanism 17, which restores the exact camber required to it, taking into account the variations in the thickness of the blade; it can also be seen that the blade is then held in this position during quenching, so that this camber persists in the. blade completed. Quench fluid is sprayed onto the annealed blade from manifolds 56 and 57, from which a number of individual quench tubes 58 depart to terminate. near the blade, these tubes being oriented so as to ensure a uniform distribution of the quench fluid. The collectors 56 and 57 are supplied with refrigerant fluid by the pump 59 which sucks it into the bath 12 through the separation chamber 60.
After being projected onto the blank, the refrigerant flows back into the bath to be then recirculated. It will also be noted that two initial quench pipes, 52 and 63, are arranged between the driven roller 47 and the support roller 54 of the secondary bending mechanism 17. 'Thus,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
when the annealed blank leaves the second coil, it undergoes partial quenching before being imprinted with the final camber, a very important operation, since it ensures that the desired camber is actually obtained.
After leaving the secondary bending mechanism 17, the blank is taken up by a series of opposed rollers 64, some of which, like the roller 61, are controlled, all of these rollers being fixed according to a determined relative curvature, of so that, as it passes between these rollers, the blade is continually held in the desired shape. Quench coolant is constantly sprayed against the blank during this stage of operations, so that the temperature of the blank is lowered below the critical point with the rapidity necessary to achieve the desired metallurgical characteristics.
The relative curvature of this latter roller system can be varied by suitable adjustment of the axes of the various rollers by any conventional means, so as to be able to process springs of different radii of curvature. Note that no compensation is provided here for the variations in thickness of the blades, determined by the thinned ends, and this is for the reason that, these ends, being very thin, cool and stabilize rapidly, whereas the main role of rollers 64 is to prevent marked deformations of the main body of the blade until quenching is complete. It goes without saying that the blades are subjected to the pressure of the rollers 64 until they are cooled sufficiently to avoid any deformation.
The rollers 64 are preferably slightly narrower than the blades and are suitably offset transversely of one another to allow coolant to access the blades.
After leaving the quenching apparatus 18, the blade is thrown through discharge rollers 65, at least one of which, 68

for example, is driven, this blade then entering the bath 12 where it moves so as to be deposited on the discharge conveyor which comprises a receiving strand 66 and a return strand 67. The latter are preferably inclined on the plane of the drawing. The transporter lifts the cooled slide and removes it from the bath for unloading. This latter construction does not require detailed explanations, given that it is a common carrier.
It can therefore be seen that the invention comprises means for automatically carrying out the heating, the bending, the quenching and the holding during the period of the quenching, as well as subsequent cooling which may be necessary to obtain a leaf spring having the precise dimensions. and the desired metallurgical characteristics. All of these operations are performed automatically and require a minimum of attention or care.
Appropriate compensation is provided for variations in the thickness of the blanks, and the mechanism can be adapted to different curvatures by means of suitable arrangement of the means which regulate the bending. It is easy to see the advantage of such an arrangement.
Certain modifications can be made to the apparatus and its operating mode described above, without departing from the principle of the invention.
