<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Oil burner
The present invention relates to a burner for oil or other liquid fuel, which operates by natural draft and can be mounted in an ordinary stove or stove, instead of the charcoal grate.
This burner comprises, according to the invention, a channel supplied with fuel oil, an air passage adjacent to the channel and a cap which covers the channel and the air passage by obliterating the air sucked in from the bottom up by the draft licks the fuel oil contained in the channel so as to form a combustible mixture with the vapors of the fuel oil. One or more secondary air passages are formed around the cap to provide additional air to the mixture, and there is provided a bell which can be capped in order to channel the combustible mixture towards openings of. escape of the flames from the upper part of the bell.
Combustion is regulated by varying the distance between the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
channel and the cap which covers it, that is to say the passage section of the air current licking the fuel oil contained in the channel.
Preferably, the cap comprises above the channel a downward deflector rim which deflects the air flow in the channel, on the surface of the fuel oil, and which contributes, when the cap is brought to high temperature by combustion, to vaporize fuel oil by radiation.
An embodiment of the burner according to the invention will be described below by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of the complete burner.
Fig. 2 shows on a smaller scale, in elevation, the burner without its bell, and FIG. 3 shows the complete burner mounted in a stove pot seen in vertical section.
In this example, the oil channel 1 is annular and hollowed out in a cast iron plate 2 which is pierced in the center of an opening or ring of openings 3 constituting the primary air passage, and at the periphery of a ring of holes 4 constituting the secondary air passage around the channel 1.
This and the passage 5 are covered by a cap 5 which comprises a deflector rim 6 reproducing in relief the hollow shape of the channel. Three screws 7 resting in the rim and crossing the rim 6, support the cap and allow its height position to be adjusted.
As shown in Fig. 3, plate 2 is placed in pot 8 of a stove or other stove to replace the charcoal grate, and it occupies the entire section of the pot so that the draft induced by the chimney to which is connected the stove is concentrated through air passages 5 and 4.
Channel 1 is supplied with fuel oil by a pipe coming from
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a tank 9 which delivers the fuel oil drop by drop or in a thin stream through an adjustable valve 10.
To ignite the burner, open the tap 10 and ignite the fuel oil 11 in the channel 1 using a paper torch, then fit the cap 5. The primary air coming in through the passage 3 goes around the cap by passing under the rim 6 which obliges it to lick the surface of the ignited fuel oil in the channel and thus mix with the fuel oil vapors.
On leaving the channel, the mixture comes into violent contact with the secondary air passing through the holes 4, the turbulence thus produced ensuring very intimate mixing of the vapors with the air and instantaneous and complete combustion of the mixture. The air-vapor fuel oil dosage is adjusted by adjusting the height of the cap 5 by means of the screws 7.
When it is desired to use the burner for cooking, it is advantageous to cover it with a bell 12 which concentrates the flames, forced to pass through one or more holes 13 in its upper wall.
The cap 5 itself may be pierced with one or more holes 14 allowing some of the primary air to pass directly through the cap to feed the flames.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the form and to the details of execution which have been described and shown by way of example, and one would not depart from its scope by making modifications thereto, in particular by removing the rim 6 of the cap 5.
