<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"MANUFACTURE OF STEEL" the present invention relates to metallurgy and relates to an improved metallurgical process. More particularly, it is aimed at an improved process for manufacturing steel in the Martin furnace. It also relates to an improved method of retaining the heaters of a Martin furnace in order to delay or prevent the loss of carbon.
Steels are made, to a great extent by Martin kiln processes. A Martin furnace process involves refining a bath of molten metal, which may be preceded by a smelting operation involving the smelting of iron and / or steel scrap. Each bath of treated metal can be called a heater. Refining involves. generally the elimination of carbon and it can involve the elimination of other elements, such as silicon, phosphorus and sulfur. These elements are removed by subjecting the metal to the action of a basic material such as lime and oxidizing materials such as iron oxide.
Lime and iron oxide, as well as substances such as
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the silica, which may be present in the charge of the furnace and / or which may be formed by oxidation of the silicon present in the charge, form a slag which ultimately constitutes a molten cover layer on the metal being refined.
The iron oxide remains in the slag in notable concentration throughout the refining period and a little. of iron oxide dissolves in metal. The iron oxide contained in the metal and causes its elimination in the form of gaseous carbon monoxide.
After refining it is customary to add deoxidizers and / or alloying elements. They are usually added when the carbon content of the metal has been reduced to about the amount desired in the finished product and, therefore, measures must be taken to prevent the carbon from continuing to be removed. - mine. This elimination is delayed or prevented by preventing a new reaction of the iron oxide contained in the metal and in the slag with the carbon contained in the metal. This operation can be called "retaining the heating" and it is carried out by Generally, by putting silicon to react with iron oxide instead of carbon since silicon preferably reacts with iron oxide.
In the usual way up to now, silicon is placed by adding pieces of low silicon ferro-silicon to the baths of molten metal. The ferro-silicon added to the bath melts and disperses therein and the dispersed silicon of the ferro-silicon preferably reacts with the iron oxide dissolved in the bath, preventing the reaction of iron oxide with it. the carbon contained. in the bath. The silicon dispersed in the bath reacts with the iron oxide at the slag-metal interface to some extent, further reducing the possibility of the iron oxide reacting with the carbon in the bath.
Incorporating silicon into a bath of molten steel by adding a silicon alloy to it has certain drawbacks. Thus, for example, it may take a considerable time to effect the melting of the alloy and the dispersion of the silicon and the particles. silicates formed by the reaction of silicon with iron oxide can be retained and constitute troublesome inclusions in the steel.
The present invention is based on the discovery that the addition to a basic slag in a Mertin furnace, at the end of the carbon removal stage, of a mixture of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
exothermic reaction comprising a non-carbon reducing agent, such as silicon or aluminum, and an oxidizing agent, such as alkali nitrate (sodium nitrate) or alkali chlorate (sodium chlorate) causes modification of the characteristics of the slag and prevents the reaction between the carbon contained in the steel and the iron oxide contained in the steel and the slag.
According to the preferred mode of carrying out the invention, the non-carbonaceous reducing agent and the exuding agent are used in the form of an intimate mixture capable of reacting exothermically after ignition, releasing a substantial amount of heat. A desired exothermic reaction mixture for carrying out the invention comprises ferro-silioium and sodium nitrate or even consists essentially of these materials, the ferro-silioium being present in such quantity and proportion as gives silicon to react with all the sodium nitrate and with the iron oxide and calcium oxide in the slag, releasing a substantial amount of heat.
The examples below show types of reaction mixtures which were actually used for carrying out the process of the invention (the proportions are given by weight): Example I sodium nitrate 145 parts ferro-silicon 57 % Si (commercially sold under the brand
SIL - X 145) 1000 parts.
Example II - sodium nitrate 75 parts * ferro-silicon 57% Si (commercially sold under the trademark
SIL - X 75) 1000 parts.
Example III sodium ferro-silicum nitrate 57% Si (sold commercially under the trademark
SIL - X- 217) 1000 parts.
Preferably, reaction mixtures of the above types are used in the form of small agglomerates in which ferro-silicon is present in the form of small particles (preferably smaller than 230 microns) intimately associated with the sodium nitrate. . and gathered by him.
Agglomeration is carried out by intimately mixing the particles of ferro-silicon and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of finely divided sodium nitrate, wetting them with water in the proportion (by weight) of about 2 to 3% of the weight of the mixture, molding the resulting plastic trap into masses of suitable dimensions, carefully heating the masses to expose 11 (water, melting sodium nitrate in place and cooling to effect solidification and crystallization of sodium nitrate.
At the end of the refining, when the carbon content has been reduced to the desired concentration and the steel is ready to add deoxidizers and / or alloying elements, the constituents forming the slag have been well digested. or have reacted and there is a well-formed, creamy, ripe slag, which is characterized by a moderate and uniform boiling action over its entire surface.
At this time, the iron oxide slag can slowly pass from the slag to the metal due to the reaction of the iron oxide dissolved in the metal. with the carbon of the metal, in order to constantly re-establish the equilibrium between the iron oxide of the metal and the iron oxide of the slag, according to the relative solubilities of the iron oxide in the metal and the slag.
The addition to a well-formed slag of a quantity of an exothermic reaction mixture of the type shown above effectively retards the oxidation of the carbon in the steel and allows the addition of deoxidizers and elements. 'alloy and to make the casting of the heater in a shorter time, giving less waste than when the oxidation of the carbon is retarded by adding to the bath a teneer-fault alloy in silicon
The example below shows the results obtained by applying the methods according to the invention comprising 1 + use of exothermic reaction mixtures of the above types:

In the operations according to the invention for which the above figures were obtained, the mean casting retention time was 23.4 minutes and the weight of waste was 2.3% of the weight of the metal. In parallel operations using low silicon alloys to retain heaters in the hitherto common practice, the average casting hold time was 44 minutes and the weight of waste was of 6.3% of the weight of the metal.
When the molten slag which is on the surface of a molten metal bath is pierced, an exothermic reaction mixture of the above type ignites, the sodium nitrate reacts with part of the silicon of the metal. ferro-silicon, by releasing heat which causes a local increase in temperature in the slag and melts the rest of the ferro-silicon. The silicon of the molten silicon iron reacts rapidly with the iron oxide of the slag, as a result of the heat given off and the increase in temperature, destroying the equilibrium between the iron oxide dissolved in the metal and the iron. iron oxide dissolved in the slag and preventing the iron oxide from passing from the slag- into the metal.
Another result of the reaction of the constituents of the exothermic reaction mixture is the production of an alkali oxide (sodium oxide) which tends to chemically combine with the iron oxide of the slag or, in other words, increases the ability of the slag to retain iron oxide and prevent its transfer to the metal.
In the operations according to the invention, the exothermic reaction mixtures are used in relatively small amounts. The non-carbonaceous reducing agent, such as silicon, is contained in the added reaction mixture
